It's very sequential. Honestly, I think this is harder to screw up than to do right.

I would double out gap and do one side then the other. Only problem with that is realignment. But it would eliminated steps.

If you put all of the cuts on one side you get an arch that doesn’t have the gaps on the finish side.

Two lengthwise cuts on each side in the same manner and you have some additional flexibility...
