Helenius shined in the final day of Sabres Development Camp during the 3-on-3 tournament. It's been a whirlwind week and a half for the 18-year-old, bur he's loving every second of it.

The 3 forwards signed this off-season for the bottom 6 were in the top 50 of fastest short burst skaters in the NHL last season & they all totaled about 500 hits. Zucker himself also had a good number of hits & has had 5 20+ goal seasons on his resume. Signing 33/34+ yo forwards to 4+ year contracts is not very smart & most will be buyouts in about 2 years. Even Vegas understood that. Now Skinner, who stats from February onward last season, was February- 2G 1A March- 5 goals (3 vs Seattle) 0 after March 18th.

I think the fourth line will be a story/strong point next year, and I expect third line center to essentially be a competition between Krebs, Lafferty, Kulich, and Helenius. I am not sleeping on Helenius to make the team either.

@mttzakr23 Next season the Sabres will be hitting forechecking monsters with much faster forwards especially on the lower lines. Benson will be entering his 2nd season. Helenius will probably sign before training camp. I love how 2 forwards dropped to the Sabres in the last 2 drafts.

The Zucker deal is for only 1 year and can be moved at the deadline(Let's hope not) 5 mil is a bit of overpay but doesn't hurt the big picture. next year there 5mil in cap space.

@@edkeighron4069 I prefer Zucker at 1 year than giving 33+yo FA forwards 4 to 5 year deals.

These guys look like they are playing in slow motion (lots of "coasting" and minimal hard skating). Also, NOT impressed with KA's free agent signings. WHY do we always lose out on blue chip targets ???

You want another Hall singing? Also it is a 3 on 3 scrimmage with no contact. What do you expect?

@@Buffalosabskis 1. NO, I don't want "another Hall signing." When did I ever indicate that? Talk about strawman argument -- setting up a FALSE premise to be easily shot down. What I do want, however, is targeting some important FA targets we want, and then to be able to close the deal successfully. I'm sick of Buffalo always "settling" to pick over leftover scraps. 2. What do I expect in a non-contact 3-on-3 scrimmage you ask? I'll tell you in one easy word: HUSTLE. I want to see HUSTLE and hard skating ALL THE TIME -- EVERY TIME a Sabre takes the ice, whether it's a practice or a game. These guys are PAID PROFESSIONALS, or soon-to-be-paid professionals, and they need to participate as if they care. That's what I expect.

@@wingedbuffalo4670 To get a FA without the playoffs for a decade and a half you need to over pay. I don't want a 35 year old Stamkos at double digit mil either. I also dont think a person like Kane is the answer. I went to this event and saw the same about of "HUSTLE" as any 3 on 3 scrimmage I have ever seen and I have been watching the tournament for over a decade including the other teams in it. 3 on 3 has an entire different system to it. Ever watch current regular season OT? It's all about conserving with "HUSTLE" at the right time. There is so much room on the ice you will not have any in the tank if you skate like crazy the whole time. Hockey IQ is most important with open ice. Sabres need to slow things down to win games. They were exciting the season before last, but it is not sustainable for 82 games. They need to clog the zone, lay down on two on ones, clear the zone, put sticks in the passing lanes, block shots, hit etc etc. You need to be annoying to play against. I am not saying it is 1999, but some of that type of energy is what is needed.
