Neil deGrasse Tyson is an American astrophysicist, author, and science communicator. Tyson studied at Harvard University, the University of Texas at Austin, and Columbia University and was a postdoctoral research associate at Princeton University. Since 1996 he has been the director of the Hayden Planetarium at the Rose Center for Earth and Space in New York City. I think it's really interesting how both of you are trying to step beyond your own bias and actually listen to one another... but then it turns out to be a real struggle because you both so much want the other person to see your point. I agree with both of you. As it stands, the almost mythical status of trans individuals is making it nearly impossible to criticise their place in society, so there I agree with you. And I agree with Neil that it is now upon us all to solve these problems moving forward, by leveling the playing field altogether. Maybe in fifty years we will look back at this and think it's all just as silly as the boys and girls entrance to the school. New solutions will be found. Thank you for bringing light to this topic and speaking to people with very different views about it.

@@hannekezijlmans6578 we did even the playing field when we made women only spaces/sports/shortlists that’s how women got opportunities, it’s men that want to be women that are pushing into these areas causing the problem. Trans women are not the same as women. Pretending so only hurts real women. Have a trans category and let’s see how many trans athletes sign up shall we? If you transition to another sex you are a trans person in a separate class from man and woman if there are actually so many of them it won’t be a waste of time and money to accommodate them in their own spaces/sport/shortlists. That won’t happen because the trans movement has been hijacked by fetishists and perverts and if they can’t spy on or intimidate women then what’s the point.

That’s considerate, and if it’s a joke, it is funny. The key thing to remember is that being an expert in a field it does not mean that one is naturally right. Because someone is well educated does not mean that they are knowledgeable on the subject. The truth is, Tyson’s arguments, about many things, are suspect. It’s the quality of the argument, not the merit or résumé of a person. Good luck with your astrophysicist endeavors.

Niel is basically saying why are we surpressing trans people instead of finding real solutions that doesn't involve surpressing people for who they intrinsically are. A multiracial person can indeed identify as white one day and black as another. Why would we have to have a water fountain for colored people and for whites? We used to. If we continue to think like today on trans people, then they do in fact, apply to race. We already broke (at least most of us do) the race barrier, today it's the gender barrier. You are correct- our society is segregated sex and gender. What Niel is saying is society as a whole need to evolve past that like we did for race. Rules for sports, safe spaces, therapists and all your other examples might not be sliced i to sex or gender but something else. It's not just women who need a safe place from their abusers, and organizations that provide safe places need to figure out how to make safe places for victims. Same for the short list. Why are women given an unfair disadvantage in the first place? Like with race, we need to evolve our thinking from "men" and "women" to "humans" as a totality. Niel is being VERY scientific about it when he said sex and gender is on a spectrum. It's not always XY only (intersex people exist, people who has XX can look and have physical characteristics of male, and vice versa) so we also need to figure out how to deal with these people as well, not just trans. He just gave an example where a women was barred from competing because her testosterone level was too high. But how is that fair if she is born female and have XX chromosomes in your gendered worldview? Sports is interesting only if the competition fairly close, and there are females that are as good as or even better than males (even in physical based ones). There is an overlap. So he's saying maybe goinf forward, we should be putting in categories like we already do with weight and forget gender all together.

I agree with the OP. DeGrasse Tyson does not prescribe any solution to making transsexuality fit into the way we organise society. He gives examples alright. But all he says is that transsexuality and gender fluidity are the deeper truths which we should accept, and social norms and rules are the more modifiable things that we can have an option about and adapt. This is about accepting what are facts of human life, and what are choices in human organisation. The later can change and the former ought not to be blamed for making it apparent.

There are some rare chromosomal anomalies, but for the most part (99.995%), biological sex is binary: male XY and female XX. Changing external genitalia via surgery doesn't change this. A female's fertility cycle, physiology and biochemistry is very complex. Yes, gender is more fluid, and yes that's many associations many of which are cultural. But still gender and biological sex are two very different things.

How? By trying to explain science? Take sports, for example: sports are about individual capacity of the people who do it, not the statistic common characteristics of a determined group. That's why dividing sports into just women and men will never be enough and that's why he's talking about fixing the plane field. We need better categories than men and women. For example, women in sports have a much higher percentage of genetic variables that actually would make it hard to define them biologically as women, even if they have the external biological expressions we recognise as female. People are just ignorant about the science behind how sex is defined biologically. Don't believe me? Ask a geneticist.

It is relatively simple to create private spaces in a bathroom, the real issue is the underlying principle of 'women (female) only spaces.' I don't care about bathrooms. I care how you can prove voyeurism and exhibitionism - known sexual crimes committed overwhelming against women - if you have locker rooms, spas, and other spaces where anyone can 'self identify' as a woman and enter. I am still waiting for someone, anyone, to give me a definition of the word 'woman' that neither relies on biology nor on stereotypes yet still retains enough meaning you could legally classify someone as one. Maybe I'll consider the 'trans women are women' point as possibly valid if anyone could do it.

There were children in a hospital in South America,one hundred years ago( scientific data in medical school library), many babies were dying after admission, even when they had the proper treatment...they didn't have their mother or any maternal figure with them. One male doctor thought the nuns could help,and they did,in less than one month all the babies were eating and getting better with the same medical treatment as before.After that trial, mothers were allowed and prompt to stay in hospital with their children,if they had children at home the nuns would help in the hospital. You don't feel the same in front of a woman and it's not just a feeling... you don't feel the same in front of a man and it's not just a feeling,.It has consequences in your life and everyone else.
