When I visited Australia in 1991 and heard these in the distance, I finally realized this was the source of the "jungle" sound in Hollywood movies from the 1930s into the '50s - and never were such movies supposed to be taking place in Australia. I had always assumed these calls were made by monkeys, some of which do make loud noises sort of like this.

My favourite memory from my trip to Australia in 2005 - a life-long dream for me - was being joined by no less than NINE kookaburras, adults and adolescents, at a marina in Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park. They wanted to share our picnic lunch, and one juvenile actually perched on the arm of the lawn chair I was sitting in! I've never appreciated the profile view of a kookaburra since that moment - give me face-first, full-on clown any time. I doubt I'd ever get tired of their banter, but then I have had pet parrots who never shut up so I'm used to a cacophony! We did not feed them, to put the minds of animal conservationists to rest.

There are some beautiful parks on the water in Sydney which fill up with bbq's and picnics on the weekend, and the kooka's lurrrrrv waiting for a sausage to go from your plate to mouth. Their timing is brilliant. Not long ago witnessed a big old goanna casually stroll out of the bush at a park and make what i thought were korean tourists scatter in panic leaving their picnic table open for business. They know what they are doing. Banquet. Every country has their own collection of picnic thieves. Nothing wrong with sharing.
