This album came out in 1979 and started Kool and the Gangs transition to a pop act. Prior to this they were a jazzy funk group.

"Too Hot" was the top ten follow up to their top ten hit "Ladies Night" and the hit prior to their number one hit "Celebration". Peak Kool & The Gang. "Too Hot" defined the sound of smooth for the next decade. They added a bit of funk to smooth out a disco beat and dressed it with some cool jazz guitar, piano, trumpet, and sax, while reclaiming the vocal harmonies from the sixties and seventies to update them for the eighties. "Too Hot" is surprisingly chill.

(5:08) -...NO need to explain Kool's rise, but we DO need to explain the "Halston look".....you see, Kool & Gang hired a new Singer (the incomperable JT Taylor), and got a new Producer (Emir Deodato)....MAGIC!! ...absolute Magic! - ...their 1979 LP, "Ladies Night" was a MAMMOTH success....because, they had a bunch of HOT "c-caine Halston Ladies" on the cover! (1:47) ...ha-HAAA!! ..this was the 2nd single from it, and, Empress!? ...it was *HUUUUUMMMMUUUNNNGGOUS!!* - ...it hit#5 Pop / #1 R&B, Spring 1980, and it was a mammoth crossover tune...Westcoast Pop, Jazz, smooth Jazz, R&B, Quiet Storm, Adult contemporary....EVERY station played it! ...It was THE Song that made them the TOP R&B Group of the 80's, and, JT became their BIGGEST lead Singer.... - ...I was gonna give the charts, but I'm working....It was BIG, Empress, BELIEVE me...

I never paid attention to the sad lyrics of the verses on this, I only ever knew the happy chorus "too hot lady" - I always liked the song, but now I feel sad about it! The groove is still so good though.

Coolio sampled this song with the same title in his 1995 popular album "Gangsta's Paradise". It used the music and chorus with poignant lyrics about the AIDS crisis then and how people should practice safe sex. It's well worth a listen. R.I.P. to Coolio.

Wow this song came out when I was in 7th grade. My first girlfriend Michelle and I reminisced about that earlier this year. Crazy how time has gone by. Back then leaving notes in her locker to meet me behind the gym before study hall was considered misbehaving😇

What a classic, so many great memories of my childhood from the music of this era (incidentally) The late coolio brought out a remake of this song around the mid-90s which is worth a listen 👍🙌

Ive been to like three if theirvlive concerts in San Carlos CA back in the 80's before i even knew that Kool was not the lead singer but the guitar player..! ! They are up there with E W & F and the Commodores for sure... Love the song Joahna
