Pokemon Competitive Singles is now Koraidon's domain. This sure is something. This Pokemon creates sun and has a lot of Attack, and is Fast, and clicks various Physical attacks in order to deal damage. Really it's very interesting and well done, all around. I love that.
Koraidon or Miraidon? Koraidon vs Miraidon? It's all up for debate, really. It's a contentious issue.
Iron Mugulis, or perhaps even Iron Fellow, may have orchestrated all of this from behind the scenes. Or is any of this even real? Nobody truly knows.

I don't think Groudon would be completely outclassed. Groudon still has utility moves like twave, stealth rock and I believe it will get spikes and will o wisp even. Not only that, Groudon is a ground type and grounds are mostly mandatory on teams. Both Groudon and Koraidon can exist on the same team quite comfortably. I think the one who would suffer the most of Kyogre, who now has to deal with two sun setters instead of one

I could actually see Koraidon and Groudon on teams together as best buds. One of the weak links in weather teams was having your weather setter (often a Pokémon with limited use outside of that) killed. However Koraidon and Groudon make a core that is only shares an ice weakness, and not many Ice types particularly want to take sun boosted fire moves, even the Kyurems. Interestingly, none of the protosynthesis mons resist Ice, although AV Flutter Mane and Screens Scream Tail could fill that role perhaps. A half Sun Team of Groudon, Koraidon and Flutter Mane, along with a trusty Yveltal, Eternatus, Necrozma Dusk-Mane core, could switch modes between pivoting with the latter core, waiting for a time for Koraidon or Flutter Mane to punch a hole

Something I always thought was interesting was that they never really let any of the sun setting legendaries have a fire typing. Groudon and Koraidon are both sun setters but lack the fire typing. However, Kyogre and Miraidon both have stab typings of their setting (water and electric)

Sun is inherently stronger for Fire types than Rain is for Water types. Removing a commonly seen weakness is much better than weakening a type you already resist. That's why, at least I assume, Game Freak gives Sun to the "weaker" mons compared to Rain. Ninetales is weaker than Politoed both defensively and offensively. Torkoal has a worse moveset than Pelipper. Groudon and Koraidon are, as you said, not even Fire types (and thus cannot support the Sun boost with STAB). Koraidon also kind of has the Rain problem, where the weakened type is already resisted - it would have really loved if Ice were weakened instead at this point. We've already seen how strong Primal Groudon was (granted, it had a super weather instead of just normal sun). Just imagine if Koraidon was Fire/Fighting type, throwing off STAB boosted, ability boosted, Choice Banded Flare Blitzes in the sun that it itself sets up. With a Tera boost, that does over 50% to max phys def Giratina.

A big difference now vs then is more optimal stat distribution. Groudon and kyogre both have higher attack/special attack than necessary for them usually using only physical or special. Rayquaza has the stat special attack stat as attack even though 90% of the time its just using physical attacks. Now we have koraidonn whose stats are extremely well distributing

To be fair, Primal Groudon is still even stronger, at least going by National Dex Ubers viability. In fact, the main issue there is that sun teams tend to just use both and run absolutely rampant. With Miraidon, Mega Rayquaza, and Calyrex-Shadow banned, Primal Groudon and Koraidon are #1 and #2 in the metagame, and it doesn't look like that will change any time soon.

There is a few roles that Groudon can fill that koraidon can't. That is one the paradancer and a sun setting stealth rocker and a decent check to Miradon especially with the assault vest item and heavy sp.def investment. Ground is already has a better type defensively than dragon/Fighting and stab precipice blades(especially in vgc) is still a useful option. Also being able to check Zacian-Crowned when it returns is also great. It's not like Groudon will be outclassed it just will have to feel roles that koraidon can't do.

Koraidon is my fav cover legendary. the animation and story of it is so evocative. it starts from a position of severe weakness, and you have to save it. and feeding it sub sandwiches never got old. you just get so damned much time with it as well... riding it all the time, it always comes to your picnics... by the time you can use it you're already friends. scarlet was a big stetup in the emotional investment with the cover legendary. more than building up to a big epic moment, it's about becoming friends. the only other one that comes close is the "let's go" series, which provides lots of bonus interaction with the mascot, and adorable animations... plus they let you fight with the mascot immediately.

UBERs Rain teams would likely have to add Pelipper since it would allow them to keep up with double Sun teams. Pelipper also switches in against EQ from Groudon, so its not solely there to switch into Koraidon. It has to be careful not to get nailed by Groudon's Stone Edge or Rock Slide, and also stay away from Thunder being spammed by powerful legendaries, but other than that, it has a good use on Rain teams as another setter to Kyogre so that Kyogre doesn't get overwhelmed by switching twice as often to negate Drought and Orichalcum Pulse.

I wonder if Miraidon and Koraidon could see a suspect when the other Ubers drop. Their Speed tier is more-or-less uncontested outside of Flutter and Bundle, which will only be exacerbated once the other Ubers return and get just dusted by the bikes. I had this discussion in the FSG discord but I do think Groudon will be able to set itself apart from Koraidon in Gen 9 Ubers Groudon has some good qualities: Stealth rock and thunder wave for support (maybe even spikes in the future), it has more physical bulk, so maybe it will be used as a bulky attackers as opposed to Koriadon’s fast attacking sets and finally I feel like when most people use Koraidon they feel obligated to use their one time terastilize on it (usually fire) mostly so they can either better abuse the sun better or tera out of weaknesses, Groundon I don’t think will be reliant on tera to work well Of course I could be wrong but we won’t know until home is released

If you're wondering how big of a feat it is to outclass Groudon, back in gen 8, from the beginning of VGC series 12 (the format that allows the usage of 2 cover legendaries per team) all the way to the 2022 world championships, every single major vgc tournament was won by either a Groudon or a Kyogre, and that didnt begin in gen 8, Groudon and Kyogre have always been a consistent part of the VGC metagame, whenever they are allowed

Orichalcum Pulse and Hadron Engine are two of the most hilariously bloated abilities ever introduced. Normally, Koraidon would be hitting for much weaker than other box-cover legendary Pokemon since 135 base attack is fairly low for Ubers standards, but then this ability comes in and fixes that. Same with Miraidon on the special side. If these two do come back in future generations, I will not be surprised if these two abilities gets targeted similar to how Intrepid Sword got targeted in gen 9.

This reminds me of how the mobile game Pokémon Masters balanced Groudon and Kyogre, both are DPS who set their respective weather and get boosted from them, but Kyogre had lower attacking stats to balance out the rain boost. Too bad they can't do something like that on mainline, maybe if Koraidon was part Fire or Miraidon wasn't part Electric it would have balanced them out in a vacuum.

While that is true, it’s not very reliable as a defensive answer due to its 55/55 defenses meaning it always dies to flare blitz or gets chunked for around a third of its health by u turn if you try to switch it in expecting a dragon or fighting move.

Well Pelipper is a counter to Koraidon if it's not running Wild Charge. Yes I know nobody uses Wild Charge Koraidon but probably people might use it to deal with Pelipper.

My favorite box legend is mewtwo. Ho-oh stocks gonna be high when it gets added back in. Resists fire and fighting, great bulk. Hits koraidon super effectively with brave bird. Can earthquake against Miraidon. Miraidon is gonna be a Menace though, and ho-oh really doesn’t match up great into it even with its massive special bulk. Also, groudon’s positive match up against Miraidon may allow it to maintain a decent foothold in the meta. But who knows, can only speculate until home updates and the flood gates are open.

Koraidon has one glaring problem - most Fairy types laugh in its face, especially Flutter Mane, assuming the ancient bike-dragon is not running the Swords Dance + Flame Charge set. It's immune to BOTH of its STABs, and if it gets a Speed boost from Protosynthesis or is running Choice Scarf, one good Dazzling Gleam or Moonblast will almost certainly annihilate Koraidon, due to the latter's 4x weakness to Fairy. Of course, if Koraidon goes Tera-Steel and uses Iron Head or Heavy Slam...

Yeah Flame Charge, Flare Blitz, Iron Head and Heavy Slam, there's only one fairy who can actually take a hit like that and that one is Azumarill. All the other fairies get laughed at by Koraidon when they die to a Flare Blitz, since fire is essentially its third STAB. Flutter Mane is also the only Fairy actually fast enough to tie with Koraidon, all the other fairies besides Azumarill are horribly disadvantaged against it. Koraidon has 4 moveslots, so with two going for its stab, it's unlikely the third won't be Flare Blitz.

@@nicolaistuhlmuller8718 Again, Flutter Mane would have to be running a +Speed nature to get the Speed boost from Protosynthesis, and then would definitely outspeed Koraidon, who only gets an Attack boost in sun. A smart player wouldn't leave Koraidon in against Flutter Mane, because it would revenge kill the ancient bike for sure. Also, if the Flutter Mane player is smart, they'll have Mystical Fire on it (which, being a Fire move, also is boosted in sun) which would overcome even Tera-Steel.

@@JanusHoW that still doesn't change that Koraidon beats almost any fairy, and even Flutter Mane can't take on a boosted Koraidon, and Mystical Fire doesn't OHKO even Tera Steel without specs. So it's not that "most fairies laugh in its face", it's more "a single fairy manages to be in a more advantageous situation against it".

Groudon can't be outclassed by Koraidon. It fills a completely different role. If anything, Groudon will be the better Uber, as its full Electric immunity might let it check Koraidon

i love koraidon, hes so adorable. but really, koraidon is overpowered. like, fighting tera type just dominates things. drain punch is VERY good to use on koraion. with very high attack stat and being fighting type, its quite strong. and it heals you, so you can spam it to dominate most teams. colision course is also very good, too. koraidon is my destroyer/final stance. (aside from my shiny level 100 iron moth with an sp attack stat of 416 that knows hyper beam.) i use it to destroy teams and finish pokemon. my koraidon can 1 shot 3 star tera raids (ones where fighting is super effective, like normal type) can aroun 5 shot with drain punch 4 stars (1 shot with collision course, also all are super effective) and does well on 5 stars. overall, koraidon is a very good pokemon, so use it if you can.

power creep aside koraidon is my favorite only because i genuinely felt connected to him the way i did comsog and lunala. i really enjoy his design, it’s nice to get an actually reptilian as fuck dragon representation (yes there are others but koraidon is just unmistakingly a dragon type. i like the past historic dinosaur feel and the fact that he just wants a sandwitch and some hugs makes him so loveable to me. even if he had no viability he’d still be my favorite. although reshiram is a close second

Koraidon is just "Groudon at Home" in historical context due to Primal Reversion gives it only 1 weakness outside of Cloud Nine & Delta Stream, but that's just coming from someone who grew up with the Hoenn games but Reshiram or Zacian are my fav cover legendaries.

I'm of the opinion that Ubers need to stay in the 90 to 100 speed range.... with any outliers being even slower Keeping this speed range maintains Mewtwo as the fastest threat (for anything base 660 and higher) but also allows for regular pokemon such as Charizard or Jolteon to still have the ability to land hits and play roles

@@aubueruser7228 Yes... Jolteon is fast but balanced with it's scarce movepool and low bulk... Ubers these days have speed, bulk, and a diverse movepool which prevents most regular pokemon from even landing a hit As strong as G3 Groudon is, it's not the fastest thing around so lots of other pokemon can get hits on it first and wear it down, this opens up the Ubers metagame to more options when they're outsped by regular pokemon
