Korean Adoption (*CC/Caption ON for Subtitles) KOREAN 101: Luca & Cubbie Re-Learn Korean. Kind of!

Luca, who has been in our forever family for over 2 years now...was adopted from South Korea. Since he came at the age of almost 3yrs old, he only spoke and understood Korean when we took custody. My husband and I both happen to use the Korean language (as well as English) regularly, so we decided to spend most of our time speaking Korean to him during his first year home. This was because we knew just how quickly he would learn English once he entered school since that's what happened to me and many other Korean-Americans (as well as other children from dual language households) that we've witnessed with friends and family over the years.
When Luca started an English speaking Preschool a few months ago, we knew his English was getting really good, but didn't realize his Korean was being lost at the same time. It wasn't until a recent conversation with his Foster Mom while speaking with her on the phone, that my husband and I found out just how much he forgot how to speak in Korean.
This vlog is a bit different from my FAQ's I've done, but thought I'd capture a fun and light hearted way to get my boys to speak and kind of 're-learn' Korean for Luca. Cubbie is there for moral support:)
We definitely realize many Korean-Americans don't feel the need or even want to speak Korean these days. But I think in the back of our mind, we hoped our boys would know at least some so they can communicate with their grandparents (especially Grandma on their daddy's side) and in Luca's case, also his Foster mom and maybe one day his Birth Parents. I know not all Korean Adoptees have the chance to be able to keep their native language, and maybe even Luca will reject the idea of it one day. But since we are able to speak it...I feel like we should at least try to give him the opportunity to speak in both languages if possible. We'll see how this goes.

Hi Everyone! Thank you all so much for the love you've shown on this video! I am very new to the vlogging world and didn't expect this, so am very humbled and eek...a bit overwhelmed with trying to read and get to comments/messages! So I thought I'd write back here. Thank you for your understanding as I am still very much a full time mom to two extremely energetic boys who keep me busy all day! I appreciate the comments about how to go about keeping the Korean language for our boys. Ultimately, please remember that this is only a short few minutes of our life. We speak Korean and English fluently throughout the day on a regular basis. I very much agree with much of the advice that we need to focus on actually getting him to respond back in the language though. So we plan to speak more Korean in the house and getting him to speak it back. (Sidenote: Poli and Pororo are still favorites in our home!) To those who are new to getting to know us, I am a Korean-American who was born in the U.S. and know what it feels like to want to fit in with the American culture growing up...not wanting to speak Korean. So I can relate to many of the comments about assimilation as well as being appreciative of having to speak the language at home so that I can now speak it well enough as an adult. I hope that my boys will feel the same way about the language one day, even though they may not always feel that way growing up. I am hopeful though, but we shall see! Thank you again for the support. This was meant to be a light hearted, fun video and I plan to make some more along the way. But first and foremost, I started this vlog as a way to talk about adoption: the good as well as the hard times. Adoption is dear to my heart and my hope is that my openness will help in some way, to help bring more families together through this incredible process. I think that an easy and natural way for him not to forget the language is to let him listen to music, watch TV shows and cartoons or educational programs in Korean with subtitles in English or without subtitles, that way he can practice both languages.

@@HadassaMoon144 Agree. While I think watching TV and listening to music in Korean is good, it shouldn't be the only thing. They CAN speak Korean fluently so it would be a shame if they used only English with him. He will become native fluent in English just by going to school.

TV won't help because it's not a functional interaction, maybe sending him to a Korean daycare or getting a Korean speaking nanny

maybe he won't learn to talk (like making sentences, etc) from watching shows, but I think he will definitely understand when hearing Korean I knew someone like that but with mandarin

it is called self-taught learning from phonetics, he's a native Korean, by listening to the language he will learn by phonics, that is the reason why he's learning more English than Korean, because he hears people speaking in English, he has to read signs in English etc, it's the same with Korean. he will not learn 100% but it is a brain learning exercise... and is more natural, in the future he can go around the whole academic part

Please help him become fluent in Korean! He will definitely benefit when he gets older and decides to meet his birth parents. I watched a video of a girl adopted from China who decided to meet her birth parents but upon there meeting she couldn’t understand a word they were saying, when they would say “I love you” she would simply nod her head. it was definitely one of the saddest things I’ve seen.

And I agree, it was really sad, especially thinking about the fact that her chinese parents want to tell her how much they missed her and they are sorry, but she was looking at them with no special emotion (probably because she doesn't understand a word the're saying)

I think it should be IF not "when". Not all adoptees want to meet their birth parents. You know, they rejected us, why would we want to meet those people? This youtuber seems like a good mother, her child won't disassociate from her and look for "the others", I hope.

Most adopted children never meet their birth parents nor do they want to. I do think that they should learn Korean just to keep that part of their identity. Also, being multilingual can be an asset in their future life and career.

It seems to me that Luca has not really forgotten Korean, but he is no longer comfortable speaking it. I believe that he is trying to assimilate with the English-speaking students at his school, and does not want to feel different. He also may have negative feelings towards korean due to previous experiences before he was adopted. My suggestion would be to only speak to him in korean, at least for a while and have him speak English at school. Also only allow him to respond to you in korean. This will definitely help.

As the daughter of a Hispanic immigrant, I can definitely agree with your advice. Honestly, if it wasn't for my Momm lying to me and telling me she didn't understand English to convince me to speak Spanish at home, I would not be as fluent as I am today.

Wow, what a dream scenario for a Korean adopteee. While my adoptive parents were awesome, it was challenging growing up in an all white suburb. Later, I had to transfer to a more diverse area for college to feel more confident in myself. And I really wished my parents took me to Korean classes when younger. I’ve had 3 attempts at learning (University class and 2 private tutors), but failed miserably.

Aw, thanks so much. We aren’t perfect but we definitely are trying our best with our kids. I’m sorry the classes haven’t been too helpful but don’t give up! It’s never too late. One of my best friends is American and is fluent in Japanese after learning it in college. But I will say, he said he gained most of his language when he decided to move there and immerse himself in the language. It may not be possible to move but keep trying and you never know! @@bearandcubbie4238 Haha, I lived in Korea for 1 year. I'm very left brained. I have zero skills in music, arts and languages. I've kinda accepted that my Korean will always be at a 2 year old level. Obviously, it's too young for your kids to understand how fortunate of a situation they landed. There are over 100,000 K-adoptees in USA and I'd guess that less than 1% are with Asian families and even less percent with Korean families. I've seen a lot of adoption stories / talked to a lot of KADs and this is the first Korean one I've seen. lol, and Korean stuff is so hot now. It's weirdly cool to be Korean due to dramas and K-pop.

It is always hard to keep up with two languages. One degrade somehow. Korean was my first language and when I went to us for an year when I was 9, even though I have used full Korean in home (I used full English in school), my Korean degraded a lot. This is tough and I love seeing how you are trying your best to help out your son. You have that Mommy power.

i've experienced Luca's case too when was a child. i was born in spain but my mother sent me to the philippines. so my first language was tagalog but i completely forgot it once i went back to spain. i'm really glad that you're helping your sons to not forget their mother tongue. for me, i had to relearn by hearing people talk so my grammar is not that good haha

But, I don’t want to say it’s a burden but so much as a disadvantage that I was taken in at such a young age in which I was never given the opportunity to learn my native tongue. I think that's great! I see many people who don't speak their parents native language and I feel it's a shame. I've met lots of brazilian-japoneses that speak no japonese at all, only portuguese. If my family was not brazilian/portuguese, I'd love to speak their language too

I grew up in Korea with my Korean parents, and our home was just like two countries combined. I spoke in english with my mom, while i used korean with my dad. I watched english children's shows and books and stuff much more than korean ones until i was like 6. But of course the base was a total korean family. So i think that made me feel comfortable with both languages

What a lovely family you have. I think it’s great that everyone never forfeits their language for English. I am not Korean but am trying to learn it so I watch a lot of tv shows. The Return of Superman is a show both boys can watch and identify with the children there. There are many episodes here on KZbin. It isn’t that he has forgotten Hangumal but I think he is feeling like he has to be like other kids who do not speak it. I had to speak in vernacular in my home because I didn’t want my son to lose our language. I don’t let him respond to me in English and so many parents are amazed at how I did it. Well the same thing my dad did - home is a no English zone. There is another KZbinr LilyPetals who is married to a Kenyan. She speaks to the girls in Hangumal and he in Swahili. Now that the eldest is in school she has started also feigning inability to speak lol. Her mom is on top of it though. So that makes me believe it’s a peer pressure thing. More pororo than western cartoons. 😀

Ohhh so the same happened with me, I was born and raised in France but my parents' first language is Persian. I only spoke Persian until I went to school (2-3 years old) and started to talk only French with my parents (even though they were only talking to me in persian). In the end they started talking to me in French and sometimes in Persian and the end result is that today I can understand conversational Persian but it's quite difficult for me to talk.... I think you're doing great trying to keep them speaking in korean, please don't give up!

growing up bilingual my parents only spoke spanish so it was my first language but i would watch english tv shows and cartoons, at a young age i could tell the difference bc it sounded so different to how i communicated with my family but once i entered school it was very easy to learn and i became good fast and still remained fluent in spanish by speaking it at home, i think you should try to use it at home often and while he's at school in a diffferent environment he can use english.

The way I was able to speak my native language (Spanish) and English fluently was my parent's persistence in speaking only spanish at home. My dad knew how to speak English fluently but they began to notice that once I started going to an all English school, I was beginning to forget how to speak Spanish. So rather than having me speak both languages at home, I spoke only Spanish at home and English at school. I never struggled with learning English because I was in school, but Spanish was a constant struggle growing up! Luckily by my pre-teen years I was able to speak both fluently!

I was like that when my parents adopted me they well only speak korean to me just in the house so I can learn it and in public like school,shopping mall and when it’s family together they would speak English just like mixing it together

I'm currently living in Korea but I have lived in America for more than half of my lifetime. I don't know if there is one nearby your house, but there was a Korean school near where I lived. The school rents a normal American school only on the weekends and they teach Korean things using Korean textbooks. It starts from grade 1 upto 12 so try to look for those schools. I would have forgotten a lot of Korean if I didn't go to my Korean school. They definitly help with the language!

i live in the uk but i was born in hong kong, where i lived for 6 years, and was fluent in cantonese and almost cantonese. I've forgotten most of it because although my parents speak to me in canto, i talk most with my sister, who spoke English with me. it's quite sad bc I'm scared i wont be able to communicate with my mum, who ONLY speaks chinese, when I'm older or when I'm alone with her

I think it's great that you are trying to retain his Korean. I lived in Korea for 5.5 years and Korean is a frustrating language but it was even more frustrating for Korean Americans or Korean adoptees who are "supposed" to speak Korean or not seen as "real Korean" by Koreans born and raised in Korean. If he ever chooses to return to Korea or go to school there it will make his life much easier (visas for adoptees are easy to obtain and they have great scholarships in Korea as well).

My mom before didn't want me and my siblings to speak any Korean because she didn't want us to have an accent when we spoke in English because she experienced prejudice because she couldn't speak as well as a regular American. Luckily, my grandparents always visited us during the summer and would usually stay for 3 months and they would only speak in Korean and expected us to also talk to them in Korean, no matter how watered down our Korean initially was. My mom and my grandparents would always argue about this issue. It may sound harsh, but my grandparents would always tell my mom that no matter how well we spoke English, our eyes, skin, and hair will always be something that will expose us to prejudice from non-Koreans anyways lol xD Fast forward to now and I am so glad my grandparents kept us speaking Korean...

My parents are frome Kosovo but immigrated in Switzerland. They made the rule that we only speak Albanian at Home and no German. Since we always speak German as soon as we left home. Today im thankful for my parents eventho i can use albanian onli in Kosovo or Albania. But im happy and proud of my parents that they were so strikt with this rule.

I think a good thing that helps your children be bilingual is if you start talking to them in your blood language. This would be Korean. The thing that you’re doing is that you’re talking back to him in English. It makes him think that it is okay for him to do that. So instead of being like,”What is this?” In English, you should be asking him and responding to him in Korean. If you ask him something in Korean and he responds in English tell him treat you don’t know what he’s saying and that you only understand him in Korean. In school it’s fine for him to speak English

i‘m a kindergarten teacher and we advise in such situations that one parent strictly speaks korean to their kids and the other speaks strictly english without ever switching, that way the kids have it easier to learn both languages.

@Sara idk about that. sometimes when one speak strictly the other and the child speaks strictly English, the child will still forget. the child may UNDERSTAND but won't be able to put together words on their own. I know this bc my sisters, cousins, and many other people I've met are like that.

My parents used this method and It worked, I never had other relatives near by to speak with me on a daily base, I managed to learn both,...but I'm still 'better in the language which I learnt in kindergarden

bravpvnch yeah her mom is swiss while the dad is korean. From the mom's instagram, she said that each adult can only speak to the child with one language. So the mom only speaks german, the dad korean, the grandma spanish to the kid
