got2many Actually you're supposed to dress up a bit fancier when eating this meal. Like they said, not even a lot of Korean people get to have the royal feast, so when they do you want to dress up nicer. (I'm 100% Korean btw if that helps -.-)
@got2many
@got2many 9 жыл бұрын
Aspen Ahraea Cho I get there are some places that require you to dress up. there are fancy places in every country. the point is this restaurant doesn't seem to have a dress code. the cook and waiter are not dressed up (which in some fancy restaurants they are), there is laundry hanging at 3:31 where the customers can see. the cook/chef herself was there the whole time serving them . she had no problem with their clothes. people in the comments need to stop being so uptight with what they wear to eat. it's not the end of the freakin world. also, martina and simon explained in the comments section why they weren't dressed up. they were traveling all day filming.

The true meaning of gathering all those great ingredients on one table is so special as much as the taste of foods are. By coming to the king's table every day, each ingredients actually reflects each regions that they came from. For example, if some fine bean dish made with Gang-won region's bean shows on his table at the right season, the king can feel relief about that region's bean crop of the year. When Jeju island cannot send their best seaweed to the king so it doesn't appears on his table, he feel sorry for the region and lighten the tax for local residents there. The royal cuisine was not just for the taste, but also for the better judgement of the ruler.

There was a Chinese queen who loved eating so much that she had double the normal amount of food buried with her in her tomb when she died and she weighed so much when they evaluated her remains (compared to chinese stature of the era) that it is speculated that she died of gastrointestinal issues because she ate so much!

Some misunderstanding in this video. Royal Chefs like famous Janggeum had moved to yojung from early 20C because of japan's ethnic annihilation policy. Anything related to Korean royal family had came to no existence. So many real royal chefs hided in yojung and now still works in yojung mainly in jongro and seongbuk area. I had chance to go to yojung in 2005 when my company celebrated new emplyees and we had royal cuisine. The room and the plates and the foods in your video are more like jocheon's noblemen's, called yangban. If you really go to royal cuisine place, it will be very different from the ones you went. It's certainly a lot more expensive than 50 USD per person. Hope this helps solve the misunderstanding the video causes.

I watched this while eating lunch. Great decision on my part. I've had high dollar traditional Korean food at restaurants that were paid for by my bosses, but I guess this is different? I would say that this meal is a stripped down version of the Korean Royal cousine, so that average people can have Royal cousine. When I was in S.Korea, I used to have similar meals like this twice a month or so. The meal you guys had is surely good quality, but that is not a once in a lifetime experience. In Seoul, I had a $500 meal per person which included Sin-seollo (Korean casserole), San-Sam-mal-ee (wild ginseng with 1++ beef), Da-Geum-Ba-Ri (sawedged perch), and so on. And that was the cheapest meal on the menu. (T.T) Anyway, your vids always make me go back to Korea and have Korean cousine. Good work guys, thusmbs up~!!!!

VanTOPChoi I have a question. since you've experienced this type of cuisine. do you have to dress up for it? a lot of people in these comments seem to be criticizing them for wearing tank tops.
@VanTOPChoi
@VanTOPChoi 9 жыл бұрын
got2many No, you do not need to. Simon's and Martina's outfits are totally OK for the restaurants they visited. I do not understand why some people are criticizing them for thier outfits. I am 100% sure since I am Korean, and my hometown has alot of similar restaurants like the one in the video, which serve meals from $30 to $200 per person. Casual outfits are totally OK in most Korean restaurants except very few high-end ones. Even in those luxurious restaurants, you can wear casual outfits when you dine out with your friends or family since you are most likely to be served in a private room. Employees cannot kick you out because of the outfits. In the case when you meet an important person or attend a formal meeting at a restaurant, then you need to dress up though (which is a common sense in any country or culture. ^^) Just know that there are very few high-end restaurants including luxurious hotel ones do require a specific dress code.
@zahor0269
@zahor0269 8 жыл бұрын
One thing that I have noticed is that when comparing Korean cuisine vs American/Canadian cuisine is that Korean food is more about strong flavor with, I guess a fewer amount rather then having like thick cuts/pieces with flavor. I say this based on how in this video and a others that Simon and Martina and the rest take like small amounts of carrots and others to get the flavor rather then grabbing large amounts. It can also be seen when they cut their meat into small chunks (not counting Simons man-warrior bites).

kathleenmms good news - Korean food is really not fattening. It's usually well balanced and not full of empty calories like a lot of food in America is. It's good stuff. Eat well! You won't get fat!
@got2many
@got2many 9 жыл бұрын
Kim Hyoyeon it is a bit healthier than American food but it does have a lot of sodium which is still unhealthy for the body. also if eating a lot you can still gain weight. there are overweight people in korea.
@Lyriqt
@Lyriqt 9 жыл бұрын
got2many I know. As long as you don't eat insensibly by stuffing your face, but eat normally, you won't "get fat". If you're active, it's good. Sodium in excess is a bad thing, drink lots of water to flush the system and try to stay away from too much overly salty food in a day. Otherwise, they really should be fine

+retarded qfuck true, but nobody eats plain white rice in korea. they're always mixed with brown rice, barley, different beans etc. my mom put soybeans, brown rice, black beans, and corn kernels in mine and they're GOODDDD. sometimes i even put in chestnuts or sweet potatoes haha but yea, korean food is generally healthy because of the high amount vegetables and non-meat foods they eat with their meat, but the biggest problem of korean food is that it is high in sodium (only if you eat soups with your meal) and carb ratio is a tad higher than ideal

Yesss! So excited you guys finally went! : D Also according to every Korean historical drama I've seen, ever, the king is NOT supposed to eat all the food- he should eat enough to show he enjoys it/until full and send the rest away. Then the kitchen staff get to enjoy the leftovers of what they made. Any Korean history majors that can confirm this for us? : O

They mentioned it on their blog post that this is a supremely specialized kind of cuisine that only That woman is officially titled to make. The food takes time to prepare and to eat and enjoy, so the restaurant has a very long waiting list and can only accommodate very few people per day.
