It's because younger people are less secure with their culture so they want to assert that they are actively a part of their culture and know things about it, while the older people are very secure with the fact that they're Chinese, like they don't need to let anyone know, they just are. Which makes them more open to trying new things because they see it as a compliment to their culture that we tried to make their food instead of an insult.

However, the 100% Chinese people (the older ones) would obviously know a lot about Chinese cuisine and claim that Panda Express is fairly decent and relates closely to that of true Chinese food,, while the young American Chinese teens are criticizing it left and right. They've probably never even had authentic Chinese food, yet they feel the need to validate their ethnicity (like Alleson Estar said) and make fun of Americas attempt to imitate their culture. The real Chinese folks compare Panda Express to their knowledge of Chinese food and give a positive reaction. The thing about Chinese food is that it's all freestyle, which is why I'm not surprised that the elders were a little more open to the Americanized versions of it. In China, a dish with the same name could be entirely different in two different places - and they're used to it. It's an improvisational food, using a wide variety of ingredients available at each location to try and produce whatever tastes best. The kids, who did not grow up with that mentality, would therefore be more inclined to define one specific taste as "Fried Rice" and to dislike anything deviating from that taste. That's a very western approach to recipes.
@leightkd93119 жыл бұрын
Headrock That would make sense. Because they are living over here eating their parents cooking (who might've grown up over there) and only their parents cooking, most likely. They don't have much of a chance to experience different styles, I would think?
@headrockbeats9 жыл бұрын
Leigh Tkd Hmmm might be, but I think it's more to do with the fact that American food (well, western food in general) is much more uniform, and that includes Chinese food in America. For example, Sweet & Sour Chicken would taste roughly the same anywhere you eat it in America, especially if you always eat it from the same chain store. In China, it could very well taste pretty different in two restaurants _within the same city_. And that's considered _normal_. Westerners love putting foods into easily-recognizable categories, and even sub-dividing categories when two similar foods diverge in taste or ingredients from one another, even a little. That's why, for example, there are so many names for different kinds of pizza (neapolitan style, sicilian style, roman style, new york style, deep dish, pizza bianca, and so on), when it's all basically cheese on bread. In a Chinese restaurant in China, the menu will rarely specify any details about a dish - it will call out a generalized name, and let the customer decide whether they trust the cook to make it taste good (also, photographs of the food are very very common, to give customers an idea of what they're going to get). There are also many restaurants (especially in rural areas) where there is no menu at all - you pick the ingredients yourself from a display shelf, and the cook tries to make whatever you picked taste good. It's an improvisational approach to foods, that makes people much more open to dishes that are very different from one place to the next. The kids would not have that kind of approach.

Headrock Oh I see what you're saying, that is actually pretty cool! People would get so angry over here if we did that xD

Leigh Tkd LOL, exactly! Imagine if every time you went to a restaurant and the menu said "Hamburger", the only thing you would know for sure is that there would be a ground meat patty involved. You could get it in a bagel, or with a side of mustard and relish, or maybe it's ostrich meat... There would be riots!!

Pretty sure in real chinese food they use any and all parts of animals. The older couple may just appreciate that the food tastes okay and is sanitary. Mahreen Anwar as with most elder people, you’re approached with better perspective on things. As that one woman said at the end of the video, you can’t really expect “Americanized” Chinese food to taste the same as authentic Chinese. However, for what it is, it’s actually pretty good.

@chapin32065 жыл бұрын
I think the teenagers were a lot less secure in their culture compared to the elders who have been eating various (Chinese) foods their whole lives. That’s why they were so accepting of an americanized version

I think the older people may have gone through more hardship and are more tolerant of any food served, as they were raised that way. You ate what you had and you are expected to appreciate it. The complete opposite of the new generation, since these are middle class Chinese-Americans.

Anyone who legitimately loves Chinese Food frequents a local Chinese Takeout usually run by Chinese Immigrants. I frequent a Chinese Restaurant just about every day from my work usually buying about 20 bucks of food (I'm a lifeguard calorie intake is high) but I still visit Panda Express not because I believe it is Chinese because I believe it is Chinese Fast Food. (They have a drive thru at all the locations in my town they are a Fast Food Restaurant). I don't think I know one person who goes to Panda Express who thinks it is real Chinese.

I'm Canadian Chinese, I once did a survey at the office with coworkers to determine if there was any correlation between rest-room cleanliness and the quality of food. Several of my Chinese friends found that the more unkept the washroom was, the better the taste of their food. And I'm referring to restaurants in Toronto's main China Town district and not the fast food chains of Chinese food. The survey results confirm what my friend and I observed with the exception of one coworker.
