Us senegaleses also have something similar to Pastel... And it's actually called pastel too lmaooo, but it's way more small! We can put fish or meat with vegetables in it, just like Gabi explained 💗 We eat it with a kind of tomato with onions sauce and some also want it spicy so they add homemade hot pepper sauce/paste. This interview was interesting as well, learning more about Brazil and Gabi, it was nice, thank you for having our Gabi 💗

Yeah we eat pastel with this too. We call it "vinagrete", tiny cubes of tomato and onion, vinegar, oil and salt. I like to add parsley too.

Na verdade o pastel foi inspirado no mandu mesmo. Os japoneses no Brasil faziam o gyoza com a farinha de trigo pois farinha de arroz era difícil de achar, com o tempo foi mudando, se popularizando, e foi assim que nasceu o nosso pastel.

I have lived in Brazil over 10 years and to this day my children and I are obsessed with Guaraná! I do not like pastel, pão de quijo or feijão, catipury and brigadeiro but would kill for misto quente, feijoada, rotisserie chicken, pizza (They have the most amazing pizzas I have every eaten in any country). I am banned by my sons from making feijão which to this day my children told me to stop making because it tastes nothing like authentic Brazilian food. Brazil is a VERY NICE PLACE! Never boring because there are different neighbourhoods. I lived in the Korean neighbourhood Bom Retiro for three years and my Brazilian BFF lives in Liberdade as she is Japanese. It should be on the bucket list of places to go!

Look, to make authentic feijão all that you need is some restraint, because it's actually pretty simple: fry garlic, onions, add a bay leaf and then the meats that you want. I find that just pork (like that cheap stewing pork from the supermarket) works great, I just trim the fat. If you don't have a pressure cooker, then you have to have the patience to let it stew for a while. I usually add beef stock as well. As long as you don't start throwing random spices in there, it's going to taste right.

I remember once, strolling around the botanical garden in Rio, all of a sudden I start smelling feijão… And we were in the park, there was no restaurant or anything nearby. It turned out that there was one bay leaf tree nearby, that’s why I thought that I could smell feijão.

Fun fact,the guy said that Pastel is like a dumpling, and yes, yes it is. The most accepted origin of pastel is that the Japanese immigrants in Brazil started to pretend being chinese during the WWII period, so they cooked a mix of Japanese and Chinese cuisine, creating this "Gyoza-like" pastry with a "springroll-ish" dough.

it seems to have been based off of a portuguese sweet, that when it came to brazil it got adapted to include coconut instead of almonds, the only other origin reference i’ve found is of a woman creating something similar in the 60s based off of her fathers recipes (he studied in france)

Deixaram a Feijoada muito grossa, praticamente sem nenhum caldo, Feijoada tem que ter bastante caldo e os caroços de feijão não podem ficarem esmigalhado do jeito que ficou não, e bem que poderia por numa tigela maior!!!!!! Pastel seems very similar to particular Indian food : Patty (filled veggies/potatoes/noodles and much other stuffings acc to diff. regions). We dont use meat..in it but there are variety of patties with non-veg stuffings as well! @giggle
