Too bad his ego kept him from accepting any other view or idea. In WW1 he wore his own uniform believing it made him stand out. It did. For all the wrong reasons but still promoted. In WW2 his threat to resign his commission and enlist because Washington didn't agree with his plans was a bluff that worked. He got his way. He believed the retaking of the Philippines was the most important objective since he was "loved" so much by that country. In Korea, he failed to support any updates to the Fighting forces there which made the 1950 attack so easy. He wouldn't accept that North Korea would dare to attack. Again, his ego led him to the Yalu which was the cause of his firing. Yes, he had some brilliant moments but his idea of the big picture was actually a view of himself front and center.

as a long time player, let me tell you something you need to know. WT is not historical. It contains a ton of tanks that never existed or were just figments of someones imagination. They also contain weird values in penetration and armor that make no sense when you look up documentation on the vehicles. Also having jets show up to bomb ww2 tanks is a joke and half. This all combines into a very a-historical tank combat feel.

One of my high school teachers in Taiwan said he was a Chinese expatriate living in Inchon in 1950. He was a little boy then. One day he heard his friends said there were many giant ships at the horizon on the sea so they went to the coast to look. A group of American soldiers appeared and rounded them up, brought then onto their boat and sailed to one the the giant ships. They were held on the ship and were shown cartoon movies and provided as much ice cream, chocolate, and candies as they wanted. They were brought back to land in the evening. He rushed back home wanted to tell his parents about the experience. On the way he saw many houses had been destroyed by gun fire. When he saw his house it looked intact and he was relieved. However, as he pushed open the door, he found only the facade was still intact.

What I like about this channel? They don't make judgment about any army/country, be it aggressor, defender, or friend or enemy of the countries they come from. Kings and Generals just reports historical facts and military tactics and their outcomes, and refrains from commentary. I find this refreshing, as many soldiers in wars past were conscripted and had no choice on being on the battlefield, and all soldiers should be shown respect(except those that massacre civilians and already defeated foes the surrendered).

An underrated war that lasted 8 years until 1988 when Iran won a pyrrhic victory. Still remarkable how a weak-ass country like Iran fought Iraq,which until then had the 3rd strongest military force and was also backed by the US,USSR,UK and Israel. A small correction: There was only one Marine Division landing at Inchon, the 1st. It consisted of 4 regiments, 1st, 5th and 7th Marines, which were infantry and 11 Marines, which was an artillery regiment. So when you say "1st and 5th Marine Divisions", the correct units should be "1st and 5th Marine Regiments", or simply "1st and 5th Marines".

I caught that too. The Marine Corps had been reduced to 2 divisions after the post WWII draw down. They raided the 2nd Marine Division for personnel so they could field it at wartime strength. What he also forgot was the 5th Marines and Marine Air Group 33 formed the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade during the Pusan Perimeter action. Just prior to Inchon the 5th Marines were withdrawn so it could rejoin the division for the landing. The 5th Marine Division did exist during WWII, but its only action was the landing at Iwo Jima. It was prepping for the invasion of Japan but was disbanded after Japan surrendered.

After the outbreak of Korean war USA understood that they faced strong and highly organized effort of USSR and China to spread communistic regimes over eastern Asia. Thats why Ho-chi-minh forces were armed and supplied by China. However, I understand that from Vietnam perspective it is more complex and they were driven mostly by anticolonial sentiment and nationalism and perphaps not so much by communism.

My great grandfather fought in this war at the Chosin reservoir. He lived and passed in 2001. He never told a single thing about it and I only knew he fought there after finding some records of his service.

At the Chosin Reservoir the US marines fought the disgusting Chinese while they through away thousands of men against a small amount of Marines(my great grandfather included). So really the UN forces didn’t do anything near as bad as what the Koreas and the Chinese.

I was recently reading an excerpt from a book on the history of the US Army, and believe it or not, the United States military actually considered asking Congress to draft WOMEN in 1951. After China launched their intervention, Truman and the Pentagon leadership FREAKED THE HECK OUT and thought the Soviets would soon follow (setting off a third world war in Asia and possibly Europe as well). The idea was to free up literally every every combat-able man humanly possible by packing the noncombat female forces made permanent in 1948 (Army WACs, Navy WAVES, female Marines, etc.) to the greatest number they could manage. The idea was shot down as unfeasible, since they knew it would trigger massive uproar from the public (the female forces had strictly been volunteers since their founding). As result, they instead went on a massive recruiting effort, with some success (the WACS topped at well over 100,000 overall by around mid-1952 IIRC), but not the numbers they had originally hoped for. Thankfully the Soviet intervention never came.

@@MrTylerman127 Yeah, it was actually REALLY interesting to read further on. By the early 50s (when the Korean War broke out), a certain amount of the American public was actually becoming more comfortable with their daughters serving (it helped that it was noncombat roles), although some traditional families still got very nervous when they learned that they had enlisted (and only the more adventurous gals usually did it). The Air Force even had a team of about 100-200 young ladies stationed in Japan working alongside guys examining reconnaissance photos from bomb raids (helping detect stuff like MiG jet bases, which were becoming dreadful for the B-29s and others to have to face). Volunteer service was becoming more okay, but a "lady draft"? Forget about it. Interestingly the fear of Soviet intervention also partially led to McArthur's removal and Ridgway replacing him, because Truman was furious that McArthur appeared to provoke the Soviets in public statements ("would you shut the heck up before you get us all killed" was Truman's message to him essentially). The Korean War was an absolutely wild conflict in a multitude of ways.

Have fun in the trenches). Oh and tell your grandfather that I appreciate his service(if he serves in the Axis then say I apologize you have to fight in a middle of that mess, if he fought in the Eastern Front no matter which side tell him he's a very brave man for surviving that cluster especially since he's a POW). Inchon was a brilliant amphibious landing. It's a shame that MacArthur's ego clouded his judgement and he pushed too far north, spreading his forces thin and ignoring multiple intelligence sources claiming that large armies of Chinese soldiers were massing and crossing the Yalu. Hindsight is always 20/20 though.

This war is considered crucial in China because the show of strength ensured our seat in UN and we gained international recognition as a regional power. Had we sent only 5 divisions and got kicked out, US would control the whole Korean peninsula and China would lose global status

First of all, I can probably say that the Chinese did not want to get involved in this bloody conflict. China was in the middle of reconstruction after the Second World War and it would be fairly wasteful to invest in a conflict against the United States. However, consider the situation that China was in. The United States was just mere miles from the Chinese border. General MacArthur was a fairly trigger-happy general, and he made it clear that he would not mind to use the Korean War was a pretext to attack China. Even if the attack did not immediately arrive, having the American military so close to china’s industrial north and its capital city certainly does leave the Chinese extremely vulnerable to potential future attacks. Furthermore, having the Americans so close to China also made it much easier for them to perform various sabotage operations against the Chinese, further destabilizing the nation. In addition, although China did have a defence treaty with the Soviets, Stalin (and the USSR in general) was not a party that China could actually rely upon. This was proven during the actual conflict, as the USSR did not provide China with the air support it needed to counter-attack the Americans, causing China to suffer high casualties in the conflict. This sentiment was confirmed just a few years later during the Sino-Soviet split. So, given that China had unreliable (and potentially hostile) “allies” and was facing a UN force led by a very offensively-minded American general, we can assume that China joined this war mainly for its self-preservation. I hope what I said made sense. But… I would like to add that China’s biggest mistake for attempting to invade South Korea. The initial intervention in North Korea was a just defensive action and was immensely successful. With relative surplus in munitions, the Chinese were able to use blizkreig tactics to achieve the following: 1) The farthest military retreat EVER suffered by the Americans, a record that holds till this day. 2) Nearly 1:1 combat loss ratio relative to the Americans All this forced the American to attempt a ceasefire mere months after the Chinese offensive. Had the Chinese taken the ceasefire, that would have marked the end of their just defensive action. Sadly, Mao was overconfident and decided to pursue the offensive further. Pushing into the South Korea, the Chinese eventually basically ran out of food and munitions. Logistics on the Chinese were poor, so resupply was virtually non existent. It was under this context that China suffered higher casualties than the Americans during the subsequent UN counteroffensives. So rejecting the ceasefire proposal was China’s worst mistake here….. booo

South korean force helped US intelligence works for landing, and their marines landed Inchon too. also south korea made deceptional landing at Jangsa prior to Inchon landing. Yes, USA did most of things for us, but we also fought our war fiercely.

From the title i thought this would be a vid mainly about the inchon battle, not a fast run through of the whole war. The Inchon battle was really interresting with the Americans having to land in waves waiting for the tide since Inchon had so tall walls. Love ur channel tho!! Keep up the good work :)

When North koreans retreated from South Korea, they shot and kidnapped as many civilians as they could. I remember a story from a survivor in Jeolla province when people at churches were preparing for a welcome ceremony for US troops, the retreating North korean soldiers killed everyone in the church and struck them with bamboo spears whether they were children , women , men or not. It was so horrible her village became a blood bath. Communist sympathizers working in education ministry of S.Korea emphasizes on massacres done by S.Korean military but never speak of North Korean massacres. The communists attempted and still attempts to capsize South Korea by using internal spies and communists just like how Vietnam fell internally. Fortunately, South Korea had strong military leaders who knew the communist's thoughts in 20th century, being strict about treason and having strong military grip in the country for stability against communist uprising. Whereas S.Vietnam leaders yielded to the communists and gave up.

It is said Noorhachi the Manju defeated 240,000 Chinese with his 60,000 troops. Scottish missionary John Ross wrote a book on Manjus and also on History of Corea both found online for they're out of copyright (written in late 1800s). I also want to see Wanyan Aguda (founder of Jurchen Jin) covered. It is said that he defeated 700,000 Liao (Khitan) troops with mere 20,000 of his own. Other than these two, I would love to see him cover Mgar Khri Brin of Tibet (almost nobody knows him outside of Asia) who remained undefeated against Tang Chinese invasion, and also the legend of Chiwoo the mythical king of Miao people.

@@backpressure123 by the time the manchus invaded, the ming had more or less already fallen to its own internal rebels with its capital already sacked, in fact the manchus couldnt even get pass the great wall, until they were let in that is(by a general who was originally going to surrender to the rebels that had taken the capital until he found out how bad they were, looting and burning everything). so defeating a 240k disorganized army of a fallen dynasty isnt as impressive as the numbers suggest.

I know I shouldn't, but I find the Korean war - purely from an overview perspective - one of the most hilarious in recent history. Down then up then down again then up again...and we're right back where we started. The most pointless conflict of the Cold War - Vietnam included.

Not at all pointless. And it actually wasn't right back where they started at the end. The North Koreans lost approx. 1,000 square miles of territory and were absolutely blasted. South Korea was saved, and it went on to become one of the leading economic powers and democracies in Far East Asia. The Norks? Still living in poverty and suffering under the greatest tyranny known to modern man. Most importantly, the Communist invincibility myth was firmly shattered. They had attempted yet another conquest, and this time got punched in the face. Hands down one of the most important wars in modern world history.

notes to myself: North Korea invaded South Korea, and then successfully took over most of the territory. It failed to, however, take over the Busan Perimeter. UN forces land in Incheon, and then UN forces behind the Busan Perimeter push North Korean forces back. UN forces then passes the 38th parallel and pushes north.
