Thank you for posting this video. As a Korean, I am always grateful for all those young Americans who fought in the Korean War. Souls of nearly 40,000 young Americans went up to God in the valleys and mountains of Korea. They gave their lives for strangers. They are my heroes and I will always remember them.

My Dad was a Korean War veteran and he always said that Korea was definitely a forgotten war. He fought with the VA until about eighteen months before his death before he ever got anything for his service. I was blown away when I saw this memorial. Thank you for posting it.

My Grandad was a Korean War Veteran and it brought a tear to my eye when I visited it when I went to DC back in 05. He took pictures of his time in Korea back in the 50's and his pictures look similar to the ones on the mural they have there!

My grandpa took pictures too and they look nothing like this. They were all of people being burned on raised bed like things. I guess it was the Koreans method cremations. They are the only reason I knew he served , he never talked about it. My mother then told me about it.

Well said. My great-uncle was KIA in 1951, a young man from the farmlands of Iowa. I nearly burst into tears over the fact that men like him are hardly acknowledged today. The fact that America's Korean War heroes have been mostly forgotten and ignored feels like a crime against this country and its heritage. We MUST do better.

One of the most brutal, afflicted war to both Countries. We lost so many of our sons and we buried them in our hearts and memories. As a Korean, we thank you and not forgetting generations after generation. We pray for all our young American Heroes.

I'm an American studying Korean because I'm getting my ESL certification and I wanna teach over there. This is probably the greatest thing we ever did as a country.... We went in and saved an entire country from Communism, and asked nothing in return. No land, no reperations, just loyalty. Looking at North Korea now, and the great famine in 1994 it is clear we did the right thing despite having multiple motives for fighting this war. The end result was saving a country from a madman dictator who doesn't care for his people at all.

what a beautiful memorial. The black granite really adds a lot to the sombre feel but it's everything put together that really gives such a powerful effect. You can really catch the etching at the end while you're signing off and with the light and everything it's beautifully eerie . I hope you and Bev have a good week! How is she feeling? I hope the shingles pain has subsided. 😊

Thanks Annie! It is nearly impossible to capture the full effect of something like this on video. It is a truly moving and eerie monument in person. Thanks for asking after Bev. Unfortunately she is still experiencing quite a lot of back pain, so we have had to restrict travel, and episodes. to a reasonably close proximity. She has been a trooper though; videoing even when I can see she is clearly in a lot of pain. For now we can only do the best we can and hope she gets better. Thanks.

It was the worst of wars. A war fought in a rocky, mountainous, treacherous terrain. With extremes of heat and cold, snow and ice, mud, stink, and choking dust. And all in a places on the fringes of the geography books. The Korean War... A fight many believed to be the beginning of World War 3. It was a monumental conflict marked by panic, and moments of stunning courage..by retreat and advance, misunderstanding, and blunder. In just three years of fighting in Korea, nearly as many American soldiers will have died, as in a decade of fighting in Vietnam.. On all sides, military and civilian, there would be nearly four million dead. It is *the* defining conflict of the Cold War.. a battleground on which the use of nuclear weapons is a frightening possibility. Today, the Korean War is mostly forgotten... like a nightmare so gruesome, it cannot survive the memory of morning. Forgotten, except for those who were really there. “I haven’t had a bath in ten days. We live like cavemen. My friend told me, “I know that we’re going to heaven, because now we are spending our time in Hell.” - Diary of a U.S. Marine, 1952.

Thank you Ettore! So good to hear from you! We are doing okay. Bev is still having pain in her back, so our schedule is a little restricted, but we keep working just the same. She is a strong person, and very dedicated. I am fortunate to have her. (Yes, I tell her that often.) Yes, the memorials are a sad thing, but so good to remember and honor those who came before us. There are a LOT of them, memorials, in the center of Washington DC., and many more smaller ones spread throughout the city and surrounding area. We try to video a few of them occasionally so that the channel doesn't become just about that. Have a wonderful evening my friend. Stay warm, it's getting chilly outside. :-) Paul

It's interesting that it was set up so late. I know this channel isn't about politics, but I'm courius to know how generally the american public think about war, espacially when the US is currently bombing multiple countries (is it six or seven?). Otherwise, great video. Now, when we're aldready talking history, as a Swede, I would want to know if there is anything reminding of the swedish colony that existed for about two decades in whats now Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey? Or was it just a too short time period.
@Realunitedstates8 жыл бұрын
That is an interesting question to address, although likewise essentially impossible to answer, BECAUSE, the there is no one, or even several, ways the American public think about anything, including war. Nearly anything I say is likely to bring me a lot of grief from viewers, but it is my opinion that largely American hate war, but think of it as a necessary evil . . . from time to time. Keep in mind that how the general populace thinks of a thing, and how the nation's leaders think of that same thing are not necessarily the same way of thinking about it. As for the second question, when we did the episode on New Castle, Delaware, I did not go into the detail of the Swedish fort that had been there, for no particular reason other than video length I suppose. But, I will do some additional research on the subject to see if there are historical places still left that we could cover. Thanks for the idea! Paul
@haffa47648 жыл бұрын
Yeah, ofcourse there is allways many opinions and also in America I think the size of the country adds to it, so that there is alot of regional differences. Whatching american politics from the other side of the pond it often seems like thats it's very polarised. But maybe it just looks that way. So enough politics. Ah, okay. It would be interesting. After seeing a few more videos from you I really want to visit the US someday. Had you asked me like a year ago I wouldn't wanted to. I love travelling by bike (did cycle from Sweden to France this summer), so maybe one day in the future I'll do a longdistance biketour in some part of the country, even tough everything is built for cars ;) /Hannes
@Realunitedstates8 жыл бұрын
Thank you Hannes for a very reasonable discussion. A big part of the reason we started this channel was to show that the country is not really like what it may seem from watching the news. Politics are heated, and yes, there is a degree of polarization among viewpoints, but by and large things go along here fairly civilized. The nation has its problems, but they are probably not so great as the TV makes them seem.
@haffa47648 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Espacially in the case of the US I think there are many false stereotypes and asumptions, which for a time also I believed. And a big part to remember with every country is that just because something is different, dosen't it mean that it's bad. That is why I love your channel. No exaggerations like in many reports in the media and no bullshit like in Hollywood movies. It has opened my eyes a bit. Thank you two for making this.

They don't teach about Communism and its history in schools. Professor Jordan Peterson has talks online about how dangerous that is and how Communist academica have invaded our education system with their influence. The Korean War was seen as a war against the spread of Communism in the world, against good and evil.
