While the whole world is dealing with the coronavirus outbreak, there was an incident of sex crime in Korea that completely buried the coronavirus-related news and left the whole country in shock. The so-called “Nth room case” involved a 20-something male running a sex slave ring via a popular communication app, Telegram. Since he got arrested, his identity has been revealed, and the public is still trying to come to terms with what went on in these private chat groups that involved over 70 women, some as young as 8 years old. We hit the streets of Seoul to find out what happened and how the public is reacting.
Our vision is to build a lasting grassroots movement of young people from every country to report on real social and cultural issues. We believe having meaningful discussions with people with different opinions is extremely important.

I think frankly, pornography is the core problem. People who regularly watch pornography face an escalation problem, in that you need more and more stimulation. Soon your sexual tastes cross into bizarre horrid unrealistic realms that have a cause effect of desensitizing you morally and obscuring your view of women into nothing more than instruments for sexual gratification. I say this as someone who’s been battling to quit pornography for a while now.

Agreed, plus having a lower sexual crime rate compared to other countries says nothing about the problem of there being a huge problem still with sex crimes. I do believe Korea probably does a better job than a lot of poorer countries with even less respect for women (India, Mexico, etc) but that's hardly anything to be proud of. Things like these need to be taken seriously and they need to be brought to light.

I think you have to trust your judgement in your close friends, and you have to accept the reality there are evil people in your daily life that given the chance don't have a real conscience to punish them for hurting someone else. You can't live in lala land and pretend people are basically good, because reality is basically the opposite, speaking as a person with chronic pain because I was mutilated as a kid. The truth is there will always be evil people no matter the punishment and the most unlucky you can be is to be the child of an evil or indifferent person. This is a failure of the parents of those victims. But if you're born in a kind family and you have a good sense of your friends and who they are, I don't think you need to worry about them. It's the relationships you don't have much say in, who your family is, your doctor, your teachers, that you must be cautious about, as they are often basically strangers and the dynamic of power and information is totally out of your favour. Power corrupts, as they say.
@Maraaha55

@@CaptainWumbo You are right - you have to learn to trust. But you also have to learn to read signs, and trust your instincts to protect yourself and others. I would prefer to be unfair to a 'friend' to protect my child - and myself - from any potential danger. Any real friend would understand and accept this. Anyone who blames me for hurting THEM - not a real friend. This doesn't mean report someone without proof - it means step away from those you can't absolutely trust. If you find any form of proof, then report!

Last year, it was the secret cameras hidden in women's bathrooms (and rarely men's bathroom as well), and this year, it's the Nth Room sexual exploitation case. South Korea has been suffering from the trends of sexual crimes recently, and I'm very concerned. I hear around 10,000 members were in the Nth Room, so that means as many as 10,000 people were capable of participating in the exhibiting of this sexual crime. Why are people losing it suddenly? F F well, when it comes to sexual assault in Japan, the issue is often rooted in sex industries operated by yakuza. But when it comes to sex crimes in Korea, I guess it’s more aggressive and more prevalent in society as whole. If you look at the statistics, rape cases are way more hither in Korea compared to Japan. I guess domestic violences are showing similar results. Media contents give you some biased impressions and stereotype that Japan is in serious problem with sexual assaults, but the statistics tell you korea is way more seriously troubled. For China, I guess there’s no reliable statistics and not sure. But I guess there’s less human rights and sex trafficking should be huge problem as there are millions of confirmed Chinese prostitutes overseas including USA.

statistically 1 in 4 females experience child sexual abuse - 1 in 3 females experience sexual abuse of some kind, if you include adults. Likely at least some of the women interviewed have been abused in some way. It's not clear what % of men perpetrate sexual abuse, but given the number of victims, it's also likely that at least one/some of the men interviewed have experience of abusing women in some way for sex. They were all articulate, educated, intelligent and charming. That's what abusers are like - how else do they access their victims? ad, but this is the truth revealed by ALL the research. Men get uncomfortable and defensive about it - time to stop doing that, and act on behalf of all the MANY decent men we are privileged to know - as well as all the victims. And just to be clear - men are also victims of sexual abuse - though it appears not in this case.

@@Maraaha55 The tricky thing about these statistics is that what is considered sexual abuse? A intimate hug is considered sexual abuse if the person hugged feel uncomfortable? Touching somebody's body not on purpose when you are in a crowded place is sexual abuse? Again, how you will know if it was on purpose or not? Or letting your arm slightly touch an attractive girl/man when you pass by is considered sexual abuse? I had girls before slipping their hands on my butt when they passed by. I don't personally think this is sexual abuse, but more sensitive people might think it is. If any of these things I mentioned above is considered sexual abuse, I believe the majority of people experienced "sexual abuse" in their lives before.

This particular video is about KOREA! Saying this happens everywhere is useless and defeats the purpose of the video. Those who say suchs things are part of the problem and are trivilaizing Korean sex scandals by glossing things over. I see a lot of commentators who are quick to comment things like "it happens in other countries..." to give "another side of the story" under videos that in particular have negative scandals about Korea. Guess what ?everyone knows the other side its the actual side in this video that never gets much buzz. Its harmful to perpetuate the notion of saving face and hiding what's rotten inside. Its ok to appreciate and admire art in any form. BUT many international fans(not all) obsess, fetishize and idolize korea and kpop idols. That's unhealthy. Even in crimes against women and childten like this case they feel the need to jump in and try to divert the topic of discussion. You know this case has been claimed to involve idols, actors, athletes and other celebrities? What if your favourites were in that group? Ask yourself how you would react and that will tell you which side of humanity you stand on. Instead of thinking about the victims some people worry more that their favourites might get targeted. They are quick to get angry because their illusion and rosy perception of Korea is being shattered. Life is not just about kpop and your obsession with kculture. There are devious, immoral things happening in that society that need to be addressed. You might not feel the responsibility but you as a kpop and kculture consumer are fuelling their economy and contribute to Korea's gdp hence you may have a small part. International fan community should come together and put pressure on the korean government to see change which will likely never happen. But I'm glad the real koreans being interviewed in this asianboss video are smart and consider harsh punishment should be in place for those in the group chats. Korea needs to change and evolve as a society and have better law enforcement measures in place for this change to occur.

based on past cases, korea’s legislation against sexual crimes has been utterly lenient and extremely unfair towards victim’s needed justice. i personally hope that with this incident, all participants of nth room gets a criminal record. the number of participants is huge and there’s a high possibility that not all can be jailed, but i sure hope at least all of them gets a criminal record and gets barred from entering industries that involves children or minors. It's kind of weird to me that there are so many people in the comments saying that sex education and stronger punishments are the way to solve sexual abuse like this, when in the US, punishment for child pornography is at least 15 years in jail and it's still a huge issue. The older guy saying, "If they realize it's a crime, then they'll report it" was also a very WTF moment. Like, these men are paying money to see videos of girls who haven't even gone through puberty yet and he thinks they're gonna just blink and realize that it's illegal? They definitely already know that. The two younger girls actually pointed out what the issues are leading up to stuff like this--that men don't realize how big of an issue it is and how pervasive sexual assault is in all societies so it's often brushed off as individual issues that downplay how actually serious it is.

Excessive stress and alcohol can lead to severe problems for sperm count and fertility. 😩 Seungri wasn't involved in the filming or anything to do with that Molka last year. There were 5 people (Jung Joonyoung, Choi Jonghoon, 3 non celebs) that participated in that. They all were sent to trial and sentenced last year. Court documents came out proving Seungri wasn't in that chat. The media only used his face for everything because he was the biggest celebrity and they could get more clicks using his name. Also, none of of that molka happened in Burning Sun club because the chats were from from JJY's phone from 2016 and the club opened in 2018. So no correlation. The same police that are investigating this nth room are the ones who did the investigation of burning sun. The club came up clean last summer. So there was no assualt going on there. Again, the media doesn't care if they have their facts right or wrong, they just want clicks. If you want the truth, just look at the court documents.

Anyway besides (again) this being disgusting, the problem also is because this guy was profiting in very large sums of money while doing these horrible things to these women. With prosperity comes a lot of options, and often this leads to self-indulgence. Free countries need to pay attention to moral issues. Free countries will self-destruct if their populations don't maintain some kind of moral consensus. Corruption must be fought, even if it cannot be eliminated. And moral development depends on freedom. You don't learn very well to do the right thing when nobody is looking, if there is always someone looking and restricting your behavior. Freedom and morality are intertwined.

While watching this I was reminded or the Madeleine McCann case and the two most impacting Spanish cases that I've been unable to forget, the case of Marta del Castillo who was 16 when she disappeared and to this day more than 13 years after her corpse hasn't been found, and the most recent (about 2 years I think) was Diana Quer. She disappeared while walking back home in the typical Spanish "Fiestas" somewhere in Galicia and she wasn't found until around one years later when her corpse was located in a water well in horrendous condition. Thankfully both cases perpetrators are in jail, but the sentences in Spain are a joke as well. Unless you mess up with the government or do something extremely atrocious, the sentences are not really punishing...

The old guy was 100% right on. Proper sex education (also about porn) is needed. When men are truly taught to respect women in sex is when there will be no more bystanders who can keep the messed up in business. Of course, the perpetrators should be punished severely, but in fixing this issue the bystanders really need to change. For that reason I also think the chat user's names should NOT be revealed, because Korea's shaming culture is what deepens so many of these issues. Shaming culture pushes issues further in the dark, while they need to be brought to the surface. Destroying taboos with education is the way to go imo.

@Whenthestarssettle: True, but in that case, my point definitely stands - we shouldn't excuse bad parenting. It's also not really true that only abusive parents let their children have access to the internet in this day and age (kid needs to be occupied, parents both working from home, slap an iPad in its hands and it's good to go), but in any case, I'd love to get some sample numbers on what kind of homes (i.e. family and environment) the targeted girls live in.

What I find really interesting that I, as a European, have been recommended to use telegram by many of my friends, simply because it protects you much better from companies/governments than for example WhatsApp (and I'm guessing kakaotalk). Sadly this can also be used by people who actually have something they want to hide :/ which is obviously problematic. But I don't think the government should be spying on conversations to look for cases like this either. What Korea needs to work on is changing their sex culture so that most men will truly respect women (and minors!!) so that these kinds of businesses will cannot sustain. There should have been way more users in that chatroom that report it to the police, but the lack of sex education, respect for women, and korea's shaming culture prevent this from happening.

I remember a while ago, when they caught on TV a south Korean diplomat to my native country going after underage girls. That was a cringeworthy moment for S.Korea, luckily they removed him fast and officially asked for for forgiveness. It gets really nasty up there...in the higher echelons of power. We should definitely be harsh on them no matter how much power they have no matter what country.

This is such a horrifying crime. South Korea really needs to do something about this. And the world needs to watch how the country deal with it. Also Korea shouldn't bring up Japan. This problem has nothing to do with Japan. Everytime they have some problem inside the country, they just bring Japan up and try to avoid their own responsibility.

This makes me think koreans are very naive in a way because they are shocked these things exist in their country. I live in america and there's sex rings and sec trafficking getting uncovered very often. This reminds me of that guy that started Silk Road. I've seen this before but they need to start teaching theit children the dangers of the world so they can be prepared to protect themselves. Or atleast be aware that the dangers are out there. As fir this case they need to register all participants as sex offenders

All the members must be revealed, no more covering up of the guilty, if authorities don't expose them they might keep doing it and also it sets an example. The victims deserve justice and women in korea have the right to feel safe, a right that should be guaranteed by the police. IT'S THEIR RESPONSIBILITY.

Here's my 2 cents. Things like these keep happening maybe because of South Korea's weak judicial and criminal system. Even though a serious crime is committed, rarely do they get long sentences, life imprisonment or the death sentence. People commit crimes because they know they won't be long in prison and for high ranking officials like politicians they could just wait it out and return back to society/politics easily. It's a joke. Look at Singapore for example. Despite being such an advanced/modern country they still have the highest rate of capital punishment in the world. It baffles me because to me it seems like their criminal laws are siding with the criminals lol

? I think the guy was just trying to say that literally anybody can participate. Not just the pedophiles, it can be your next door neighbor, family member, or even friend. The dangerous part of the app was that it keeps anonymity and so its open for anybody. I feel the guy was just stating facts, he had one of the best opinions. Needless to say, even he could have been apart of it, the anonymity of the app allows that. That was his point.

kelele I understand what you are trying to say. Obviously the people who joined have a twisted mind. But his main idea was to state why the crimes are continuing . Its because the app allows for anonymity, as well as the lack of punishment from the government. Those were his points. He said the people were “normal” and did not elaborate on his definition of that. I would’ve thought that by “normal” he meant not the stereotypical “fat and old male pedophile”. These people could have been anyone. It is not safe to assume that the people who look “normal” would not have participated. I do not think that he was directly calling the people in the chat innocent. If that’s what you think he is trying to say.

This is disgusting. Men need to stop preying on women. Men need to stop thinking women are just sexual objects only used for their own pleasure. It’s sickening how many people were involved in this. I hope everyone involved in this, even if they just watched, gets exposed and punished. Crimes like this should get a higher punishment so that they don’t happen as often. Also I hate that we live in a world where if people have money and power they can be above the law. That needs to change.

Sex education is important and unfortunately in Korean society like other countries around the world it is not taught properly. Knowing anatomy as well as laws and what is consent, having a healthy relationship, family planning are all important topics. Even a basic course on marriage and what it means needs to be taught. Like before getting issued a marriage license take a 1 day in person course so that people are aware of family planning, marriage under duress, and finances. I've seen too many young women just get pregnant by a accident and forced/convinced to marry quickly in korean society before the aunties and uncles talk about you or the family.

@@yellowbeez93 if you actually listened to the interviews you would know that the majority of women didnt report it because they didnt know it was abuse and they didnt know who to turn to. They were coerced, embarrassed, scared... the youngest victim was under 12. So having stronger laws and also learning topics related to health and sexual health, psychology, will help people in general differentiate when they are being abused. It will help families and friends know the signs of a abuse. The cops can't be in everyone's home but you can educate more than enough people to ring the bell when something is wrong. That's how you protect women you empower them.. you empower the society and their families and spouses to know when something is wrong... it goes along with what the older gentlemen said to have a phone line.... why because most women didnt know who to call ... why because they didnt know it was wrong and probably felt ashamed... why because it's not recognizing the actual abuse... why because they were not taught about it... why because merely talking about sex is big taboo and embarrassing in most countries let alone in a family that is asian. when your in a traditional household as a female no one talks to you about sex and when you do get married it's well good luck sis. Your gonna find out how a kid is made.... you dont get taught about disease or a proper sexual health.

And how can safe sex be done without having to jeopardize the morality of those of religions who believe things like prostitution, adultery and fornication to be sinful? 4) In a situation where a man has sex with a HUNDRED women at different days (which he then uses a condom but chose to take it out halfway through without the woman realizing it), how can you prevent such diseases from being passed on across to these women? 5) And lastly, should parents encourage their daughters to opt for prostitution as their choice of career, since it gives them the power to give consent and satisfaction when it comes to a positive sex life? *"...it goes along with what the older gentlemen said to have a phone line... why because most women didn't know who to call... why because they didn't know it was wrong and probably felt ashamed.."* 1) And what evidence do you have to suggest that "most" women do not know who to call in a situation where they are being abused and mistreated? 2) If they do not see something to be wrong, why would they feel ashamed about it? This is Just revolting, I hope they all rot in prison. And the worst thing is that this is happening in Italy too. Many telegram chats were discovered where people, more than 40,000, shared unauthorised pictures of young women (not just the body but the face too) to either over-sexualise them or as a sort of revenge porn kind of situation. I won’t tell you all the comments I have seen where these horrible people insulted women calling them the worst names as well as other things. I am just so much angry and over it because nobody is talking about this enough. These people should be punished for this. One of these men even said ‘I sell my own daughter, who wants some pictures?’ Can you even imagine? I am so disgusted and disappointed by our society. I hope they all get what they diserve. And I can only say that I feel so sorry for the victims because their only fault, which is also my fault, was being born as women.

Things like this really upset me to the core. I have followed Korean news for years and all these stories involving the abuse of Korean females by Korean males who get little to no punishment for them just shows that rights and protections for Korean women have a long way to go. What's fine for the man has never been fine for the woman. If this had been a women doing this to men & boys, rest assured the government would be moving on this so quick it would make your head spin. Sex education improvements, more serious and dedicated approach from the government, hotlines for victims and informants are among the many things that Korea needs right now. Your gender or your status should NEVER matter in your rights and protections but in Korea, this is still an issue sadly.
