When I lived in Korea two years ago as a foreign exchange student I got warned by fellow foreign exchange students about all dangers pretty much every night I went out. I even got invited to Facebook groups dedicated to specific parts in Seoul, for example Hongdae, in which pictures and information of Korean men were shared who were known for abusing women so that women knew to avoid them. It honestly blew my mind at the time. It was such a huge issue that all foreign women did their best to make everyone they met aware and to provide them with the tools to remain safe. It felt like such a tight knit community because everyone was so protective of each other. However, the community only existed because such a large portion of us had been hurt at one point that we did our best to protect the others.

As a Korean man, I feel embarrassed and horrible but I am glad it is talked about. I also want to commend these women for their courage. I can only imagine how hard it must have been. I've heard about it and I believe it exists but this is the first time I am witnessing that it is well put together and talked about on the public platform. I am not sure how to fix this because Korean society is men-centric and women's opinion is often ignored. This is a good start and very well put together. hope there will be more protection for these women and the future generations such as my two little kids. I hope many people including men will stand up for this and say no to unjust.

Thank you for your support it means a lot to us women, more than you know. The more men we have as our allies to fight such injustice and such issues not only in Korea but globally the more chance we have of decreasing gender inequality and femicide. I really believe it comes down to societies educating their men from a young age about respecting women and the importance of consent in all forms. We also need to help empower women. Especially in Korea where local women themselves find it so hard to speak up about such issues and standing up for themselves. I believe men fighting by our side and calling out the bad guys is what will ultimately lead to things changing. I have almost been here 10 years and I have yet to see any drastic change in the system. If Korea wishes wishes become this global country and promote the culture to the world they have a LONG way to go when it comes to gender equality and human rights and they will have to do a MUCH better job of protecting ALL women. The entire justice system needs to be re evaluated , Korea needs more good women in leadership, the justice system and the police force to handle such cases. Again thank you for your support.

I'm writing this as a foreigner currently in Korea. One month ago I was followed by a man while walking home. He kept trying to grab and kiss me but when I moved away, he pushed me to the ground, got on top of me, and began to strangle me. At that point I just felt like I was dreaming. It wasn't until I looked up and watched people pass by and ignore the situation that I truly felt scared and hopeless. Fortunately in my case, somebody eventually called the police but they only took me home and let the man go, telling me that it's up to me to make a police report. When I tried reporting it to my school, the advisor looked at me and said "are you really going to report it to the police and make a big deal about this?" It felt very isolating and invalidating. I havent slept in weeks and im failing all of my classes now. Im just waiting to go home. Edit: I genuinely want to thank every single person for your kind words, prayers, and support. I wanted to get my story off of my chest but I didn’t think anyone would read it. I’m back in my home country now and I’m doing better. If you're ever sexually assaulted, don't wash ANY parts of your body or clothes and preserve all evidence, such as condoms and toothbrushes. Do not use the restroom. Report to the police as soon as possible and get a sexual assault forensic exam within 72 hours of the assault.

I don't see that happening any time soon. The majority of young Korean men are against feminism. I've heard that this year's Korean presidential election is hugely influenced by anti-feminist voters. There is a reason for Korean women to avoid marriage to Korean men. Even, I've decided not to get married to a Korean man since I've seen my dad's possessive and verbally abusive behavior towards mom so many times. I wish I can give advice to those who are planning to marry Korean men that they should meet their fiance's parents and observe the fiance's fathers' behaviors towards mothers beforehand and that they should ask what the fiance's ideal marriage life is. Especially, they should make sure that the men they are marrying to are emotionally independent of their parents. There are still quite a lot of men in South Korea who depend on their mothers to make decisions for their lives. Wives get really miserable when they are on bad terms with their husbands' mothers and when their husbands put their mothers first over them.

Women in general seem like second class in Korea. I'm half Korean and think the justice system in general is trash. Also the "don't get involved " mentality is gross. You see someone getting harassed or attacked you must step in. Get help. Do something. I'm sure it's not just foreign women but also Korean women are being sexually harassed daily and assaulted often. The mentality needs to change towards women. As a Korean female, I’m glad these issues are coming to light. People see Korea as a perfect kdrama fantasy land, when in fact, it’s a harsh patriarchal society that doesn’t value the opinion of women. Ever since I was little I’ve been told how much sons were preferred to daughters. How sons get away with doing anything, but I get scorned at the tiniest mishap. How my grandma keeps telling my mother how much she wanted a grandson. How my uncles and male cousins and to an extent my dad ignore every comment I make and input I try to give - just because I’m female, and I wouldn’t know better apparently. I hate the consumerism, I hate how much beer, soju and makgeoli they drink - becoming rude, annoying, horrible people but no one bats an eye (saying that it’s normal for men to essentially drink themselves to death… literally every Korean ahjussi I know has liver issues), I hate how close minded some people are, and I hate how all women - especially foreign women as shown in this video - are treated as second class, and their issues are not taken seriously. Korea is a beautiful place to travel, eat lots of food, and meet amazing, kind people. But it’s a horrible place to be a woman, and clubbing is not a safe activity with all these creeps! I’m truly sorry that this is the norm. I wish I could change it, but changing the mindset of a whole society is a difficult thing to do.

When I reported my SA case to the police (mind you I'm fluent in Korean), one of the questions the police asked me was "How did you seduce this guy? What did you do to make him come onto you?".... I felt extremely disrespected and humiliated that this fifty-something year old officer asked me such questions. And on top of that, in front of multiple other officers. I don't think it's 'only a language' problem. I think it's a 'how police treat foreigners in general' problem. They have all these stereotypes and make wild presumptions on the fact that we are not Korean. Even thinking about it now makes me feel sick. I've seen a lot of story times of foreign girls telling their experiences in South Korea and it's scary. Not only cases of SA, but also harassment, stalking, being mistreated at work and not being able to complain etc etc. I even remember watching a video of a girl (she was a foreigner) and her Korean husband beat her in a bar and no one did anything to stop him (only one woman "tried" to stop him, but you see people passing by the girl's side ignoring the situation and when the man left another woman tried to help the girl, in total two people from the bar). I don't know how they can ignore something like that when it happens in front of your eyes.

yes people need to know korea is not all rainbow and happiness. I went to korea in 2016 and I stayed at a hotel. Not a motel. A proper well known hotel (an higher end hotel) and I noticed a small red light from the TV at first I thought it is just the TV light because TV in the front have that light but I look closer to it and touch and and sure enough there was a spy cam on the TV. Nothing happened to me be I felt violated and disgusted as I change in front of the TV many times so I went to the police right away and report it and the police say they will look for it. And I ask who will be held responsible for it and they say the hotel is not held responsible because there is not much evidence who put the camera there. So I ask then nothing will be done to it? And they said yeah nothing can be done. And I ask then should other hotel guest know about it? And the police assured me saying they want to other guest to know about the situation. Then I went back to the hotel to collect my things, the hotel managers pretended nothing happened and didn't say anything and didn't look me in the eye. There was no compensation or anything. I paid the 5 night hotel fee and left. But I still want to make sure of the other guest know about it because I don't believe the hotel so the very next day I wore a black cap and went back the hotel and stayed there then I waited for a guest on the same floor and when they open the door I ask if they know about the situation and the guest said "No! No one told me anything!" And she was shocked and disgusted then both of us went down and confront the hotel but the hotel called the police and called me trespassing and somehow I was sent to the police and I didnt pay anything or go to jail or anything but they slap me with a warning that if I go there again I will have to go to jail. And I was like for real? Not only you lied to me saying you will tell the guest because thats the least you can do and I'm trespassing? To this day the hotel is thriving and no news of it being on the news and I'm disgusted. This is speculation but I feel like the hotel know something about it as it is in the TV I don't think someone can easily put it in the TV because it was specifically put there

Growing up in Korea (up until 10 yo), I used to always hear of stories of how my aunts met their husbands. If I remember correctly, I think all of them met their husbands by their men stalking them until they gave in. Men stalking women was part of the culture there. The legal system needs to change dramatically to uphold very basic human rights especially pertaining to women.

😦 OMG. Well, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I'm not sure about other countries, but here in the US, in the 1980's "romance" novels on the shelf were about 90% rape fiction, meaning the hero often initially raped the heroine and she eventually fell in love with him. I grew up reading that, and I have zero doubt it skewed an entire generation of girls and our perception of rape and sex. Also, as a young woman in my twenties, my best girlfriends and I went out to celebrate one of our birthdays. We rented a hotel room that night, and as we were going to sleep, talk turned to experiences we had had. Out of seven of us, every single one of us had, at one point or another, been raped, molested, or sexually assaulted. It was shocking to share those stories and know that. However, something to keep in mind is that one pedophile or rapist usually has multiple victims. I know many truly wonderful men, including my husband and many friends, who would NEVER hurt a woman like that. The problem is that one single predator can hurt an enormous number of women, especially when we often don't report it for a variety of reasons. He gets to just get away with it and repeat the behavior.

I'm a Korean, born and raised here. Police here are often awful at dealing with these problems. They're notorious for being indifferent about the victims and don't know what to do at all. Prosecutors and judges are the same or even much worse. They do these awful things to Korean victims, too. Except for the language barrier, everything is the same with Koreans. I know this because I'm so used to hear these things that happen to Koreans. If you check the news, soon you'll realize. The pushiment by law is considered to be too weak in the first place. Many cases end up with no punishment, or only 1-2 years in jail. The judges (mostly men) even "forgive" the criminals even though the victims cannot forgive. Even sexual assaults to children, the punishment is weak. This country doesn't even consider stalking as a crime. So if you were chased in the street by a stranger, the police will not do anything when you report because it's not a crime. There is no protection system for victims here about that. And many will not care enough to protect your personal information. So girls, if you are planning to come to this country, please think twice. If Koreans read my comment, some of them may be like I'm against this country and blame me. But really, I'm against the problem not the country. If they don't fix this problem, they're the ones to be blamed on downgrading the country. If you want to be a patriot, what you should do is not to blame people who righfully critize the problems but to actually make the society better. And if someone speaks up about this problem, I've seen many guys be really offended and complaint she is making every man a "potential criminal." As a native Korean woman, I am deeply sorry for victims. I love my country, but I can't deny that this country still regard women-no matter if you are native or foreign woman-as some sexual objects or basically the existence for men. Even to native Korean women, sexual harassments/assaults/even rapes are dealt as trivial things to police. Korea has still long way to go. Unacceptable and shameful. Even foreign women were victims, and obviously they are not fluent or don't speak Korean, so that's even tougher. When they report, it ain't easy and they ultimately have to live with the guilt. Because they're foreigners, things are much, much tougher. Translations are required, your visas need to be viewed, evidence is needed, judgment is needed, etc. It's a waste of time, effort and resources. Why can't people and countries just be direct and straightforward? I have no idea.

Consider this, alcohol is one of the biggest causes of rape, so a lot of guys lose a lot of self control when drunk. Yep. Korea is something else. When I was there, I definitely can say the club experience is eye opening. A lot of the men think foreign women are easy. I experienced being touched intimately, without my consent. Never say, "Not all Korean men are like that", because that's a given, and it really doesn't matter if every, single Korean man isn't like that. A Korean man doesn't get a cookie, for not being a rapist, and not being a rapist doesn't mean he advocates for women and challenges other men to be better. The cultural attitudes towards women are shameful, which is why it's an uphill battle. Men are often slow to hold other men accountable, but spend a lot of time trying to govern the behavior of women - that's true all over the world. But in the US we have better laws..not better men, just better laws to protect women. Korea has shitty laws, and that must change. It's easy for a man to think he's special, when he compares himself against the worst his society has to offer. But being a decent human being isn't special.

I still remember that case were a man raped a little girl basically everywhere, even the ears, and his prison time was reduced because when that poor girl was interviewed by the police she made the error to say that she smelled alcohol. From someone that was in Seoul only for six months: never NEVER say that you smelled alcohol on someone if they assault you, their sentence will be reduced, this only if the police will listen to you.

This is a nightmare. I knew it was bad in SK with all the sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexual violence, digital sex crime, rape, stalking, spycams and more.. but following new statistics it’s now 1 out of 2 women in SK who experience at least one of the named sexual crimes. My mother doesn't allow my sister who works in SK to live alone because of this. My sister is living with the grandparents in a condo that has 2, 3 security guards at the front entrance desk to check who's entering, and the grandma always makes sure she returns home after work. If you don't have a family in SK, make sure to find a safe place to live in though it might cost you more. You can also get a roommate if you feel unsafe living alone. Especially, DO NOT GO CLUBBING in SK. I've heard so many nightclub rape stories from my Korean friends that men drug women in nightclubs, drag them to hotels, and rape them, but they don't get charged with their crimes because police lighten charges when they say they are drunk and don't remember what they did.

I had a similar situation. I went on the subway in korea and I was together with a friend of mine. There was a man who looked very confused and he grabbed my wrist. I thought he needed help at first but he didnt respond. I tried to break free of the grasp but his hold was really strong so I couldnt. My friend was frozen and I was quite scared too, but luckily some korean high school boys smoothly moved inbetween the man and I, making him let go of me. I tried to thank the students but they pretended they didnt do anything, which made me feel even more thankful. Edit: Also, afterwards, a korean woman approached me and apologized for what happened (even though she had nothing to do with it). She didnt want me to have a bad image of Korea because of that man, which I think is really sweet. Personally I never went to any clubs in Korea and I experienced Korea as a very safe country. (Apart from some situations like the one above, I felt really safe) however I heard many stories from friends, similar as the stories in this video. Its sickening, and it's very true. I’m sure many people have already heard about how serious bullying is in Korea-some bullies literally disfigured their victims permanently-yet no justice was carried out. I'm a strong woman with an attitude so whenever some man has tried to touch me or force himself on me, I'd punch him in the face or threaten him, hoping that the law won't end up working against me. Been here for a while and you'd think it's getting better with more foreigners coming and going... nope. These men only have a bigger pool to choose from. Try any foreign friendly dating application and you'll see that 'open minded' is the one thing Korean dudes there are up for. It's disgusting. As a Korean woman who just turned 20 in Korean age, this angers me so so much, and reading the comments doesn't do me any good- it only deepens and worsens the bitterness. A lot of horrible men in Korea think they are in control when they face women. And, being a foreigner shouldn't be a factor that drives this ridiculousness worse. They came here because they wanted to know more about the country, or because of their interest in Korean culture, and so on. They are visitors. And Korean people, including me, and including men who sexually assaulted and left so many scars on the victims’ minds and bodies, should not be treating them like this.

Thank you. I’m an English teacher wanting to come back to Korea (I visited once before I was a teacher) and hearing so many women come out with their stories breaks my heart. as a Korean male living outside of Korea, every time I visit and observe the mentality and actions of some Korean men (friends, cousins, strangers) I am utterly disgusted. Even being straight they give me the hibbie jeebies and creep me out. I can't imagine what some women has to go thru let alone foreign women that cross paths with these men. some advice I can give for future travelers are don't meet Korean men in clubs (they are especially "thirsty" and creepy), if you do go clubbing go with a group, make sure you are with people you trust when in a drinking setting and try to avoid 1 on 1 drinking

I went to school in the states as an international student. Among us students, we were warned that korean guys often bragged about how many girls they had sex with and it was some kind of a competition among them. I had had a lunch or a coffee with my Korean classmates and almost always they wanted to be invited to my apartment after the casual meal. I never went to the club in Korea even with friends. I never walk alone as well on the streets of Korea alone more likely at night. Whenever I am approached I often been civil but not friendly as my korean friends told me the danger of me being kidnapped or being raped. I may not experienced that saddest part of their society but living in Korea for years where I experienced bullying and racism made me think not to go back anymore. I moved to Thailand and experienced the safety belt of their society.

I'd been stalked once that became a grave concern among my friends why they alternately going along with me back then. These korean friends of mine to whom I had met on travels in europe are more than open minded, more intelligent than the ordinary koreans. I don't think typical locals even if they are your friends will take concern to guard your safety for years unless they are westernized already. Korea is like a yummy looking cake but the inside of it is nothing you expect from that surface.

I must admit living in a 4 season country is a beautiful experience as I also been an expat in Japan for almost half of my life but I never experienced bullying and racism not even stalking how much more rape. I even been friends with yakuzas but instead of being afraid I am being glad to know they were not as what others potrayed them. The politeness and some ways I adapted from Japanese I still am practicing up to this date. Korea gave me the horrible nightmare that I will never forget the rest of my life. It made me feel outcasted. Being humiliated and degraded that no other races done to me (not even in Europe) I experienced in SoKor hence I really don't want to come back anymore. Their coldness, the rudeness of many and aloofness made me felt much alone. Thing is I might came from a country where manners and ethics, kindness and humility is a part of our everyday life probably the reason why I am triple shock of what I experienced while I am there. When I lived in Korea for 7 years, one time a guy followed me home and tried to enter my house. The second guy stopped his car next to me as I walked home and demanded I get into his car, so I fled. Guys would come up to me every other day and ask "how much" because they assumed I was a prostitute because I was foreign. My last experience was the most frightening: a guy broke into my apartment and sorted my underwear by color and left it on my bed while I was away. I'm so glad that these women are brave enough to say something. There seems to be a perception in Korea among men that foreign women are promiscuous

I went to Korea as an exchange student to do my practical training about four years ago. I remember I was doing several things in Seoul and then I went to one of the university's campuses in a different city. I found out a girl was raped around that time and the assailant used a letter signed by a doctor to justify his actions, saying "he was unable to control his impulses" and they just swept the girl's case under the rug. I was extremely shocked.

My daughter was teaching English .first in Degu then seol . She had a problem in a club in seol with a man following her,shoving his phone in her face . In the end she snatched his phone and threw it across room . Some AMerican guys helped and she ran away to get a cab .the guy following her gave chase and had hold of her leg trying to pull her out . She ends up getting prosecuted for damage to his phone .she couldn’t understand what was going on ,she ended up paying a fine but had no idea what she was signing .Told she would be kicked out country if she put a foot wrong . Yea you should see how the families are. Society is reflected by the family and vice versa. Never talking about things that are uncomfortable. Mental health is an absolute JOKE... As in "I'm the doctor [insert hierarchy bs seen in every aspect] take these meds and come back next week". Next week same bs. TALKING ABOUT YOUR ISSUES EVEN WITH MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS ARE PRACTICALLY NON-EXISTENT. Be aware there is NO HIPPA (PATIENT/MEDICAL PRIVACY) and your company gets your yearly physical health exam results before you do. Yes that includes psychological issues which is why many would don't go. Main point is Korea's has a SERIOUS problem with uncomfortable situations, and as such, the true concept of dialogue and transparency are just words without any substance. Even worse, the men are incredibly insecure as a good majority of their boomer fathers were abusive, overworked while coming home intoxicated, and of course openly visiting massage parlors. Is this a generalization? Yes. But tell me why it's never talked about at a societal level. I lived there for 8 years and worked in a Korean company. The avoidance culture is an epidemic. And the next worst thing is this social hierarchy. What may sound great as respecting elders becomes the gateway to a world where one has an unearned sense of superiority while another has an acceptance of subordination. What some Koreans say is "jeong" or a 'unique' sense of familial warmth may seem great but the reality is that it COMPLETELY ARTIFICIAL hierarchy which prevents an opportunity for an open dialogue on equal footing. Simply because of ones age, position, and as we see here gender and race. This also creates an environment where one always has to have the situational awareness "noonchi" that often encourages someone to actually NOT speak up, stand out, or just be different. This of course leads to a society which will not tolerate diversity. And NO it's not just race..so just because they curiously touch a black persons hair doesn't mean it's innocent and pure curiosity. There are LARGE fragments of citizens in Korea who are ostracized but barely anyone would acknowledge because they just do not have the capacity to know or accept these issues. It may sound harsh but I assure you that those single mothers, single N Korean refugee mothers, migrant workers, SE Asian women,... Hell might as well include the young girl without the right padding, or (heaven forbid) have dark skin, or (GASP*) choose NOT to be so obsessed with looking in a mirror. At one time I heard a NK refugee woman tell me that although in her home, it was the govt that forced her to look and dress a certain way , in SK the culture/society forces this plus much more and here the people willingly do this. For this woman it was just an observation as we were walking in Seoul...but it really reinforced my view that Koreans (and greater society) seems to wear a mask and not even know what it is to be without one. I often used to hear that Westerners (particularly Americans were more selfish). While that may be true, I often would tell them not to fool themselves. Many signs of consideration and "concern" are not one of altruism, but rather the need to prey and manipulate those vulnerable. Such devastating things have shown by plenty of perverted "oppas". In the end one should NOT be respected more simply bc of when and what they were born as. PERIOD.

In Japan, we've had serious problems with some Korean visitors (mainly men) being rude and disrespectful at shrines and temples. I came to Korea for temple stay in 2014, n while I was there, I shared a room with a Canadian woman who taught English. She told me not to go clubbing alone, not to drink soju with someone I don't know well, not to accept drinks from strangers (especially men), if using public washrooms, always be careful to check toilet cubicles for hidden cameras before pulling down my panty, not to leave my food/drinks unattended in a cafe if I need to use the washroom (better to just ditch your coffee than to risk having someone drug you)... She said South Korea has a very patriarchal culture n unlike in K-drama, many men don't respect women, so rapes, sexual assault n spousal battery are common even if under-reported. She told me to always be on my toes if I want to make my stay as pleasant as possible. Scared the shit out of me, but in a way it's good b/c I stayed vigilant throughout my visit to Korea. Then on a bus ride in Gwangju, I got scolded by an ahjumma for wearing body-fitting yoga pants b/c my sweater was not long enough to cover my hips. I was so angry at her meddling then... But looking back, she's advising me for my own good, b/c on bus n subway rides, there may be men who would try to grope my butt/groin if I didn't dress "conservatively" enough according to Korean standard. Funny... B/c K-pop girl groups often dress provocatively n wear very short skirts, which can be misleading to foreigners not familiar with Korean culture

I'm Japanese-Filipina and I went to South Korea with my brother and my sister in-law (Korean-American) for my brother in-laws wedding. My sister in-law warned me that korean men can be very aggressive and I should stay close to either her or my brother. I was 23 at the time and I didn't experience any kind of sexual assault until the wedding reception when one of the grooms friends kept trying to get me drunk and kept kissing me. My brother and sister in-law had to intervene while I was completely drunk and it was obvious I looked very uncomfortable. My brother almost fought the guy and made a scene, but he just quickly took me to my hotel room and watched over me while I try to sober up. I was kinda glad I couldn't remember most of the night cause I wouldn't sleep if I were to see memories of myself being forced to kiss someone im not even attracted to. The next day, my brother in-law apologized on behalf of his friend, but it sounded like he wasn't sincere about it. I love Korea and I love the culture, music, and food there and I won't let one bad experience spoil my love for Korea. However, seeing as my story is similar to the women in this video and in the comments, its apparent that Korea has a rape problem.

My Chinese friend and I interned with a massive global firm in Korea, and she was breathtakingly beautiful. Her supervisor immediately started sexually harassing her - inviting her to office parties that turned out to be just him, touching her, pressuring her for sex, and it progressively worsened. We asked several different Korean team members in her office and mine privately what the process was to report this. Almost twenty separate Koreans (100% of those asked) told her to just ignore it. The reasons given ranged from 'it's just for a short time, you'll leave soon' and 'what if it effects your career' to my favorite - 'you might cause your teammates to feel uncomfortable and it will effect the team relationship.' Not one person offered support for stopping it. I got angry and called our program supervisor in the US and he immediately moved her to a new program and canceled the agreement with that firm for interns. But I was shocked. . . Even the women told her to just put up with it. **I should say that my persobal experiences were different. I lived and traveled in and out of Korea for almost a decade and the worst I got was a couple of taxi drivers cheating me. Most locals were absolutely lovely to me.

The first time I met a Korean guy was in Japan when I was studying there. We would casually hang out and I starting feeling that something was off when we started drinking together. Once while playing a game, we made a bet and I said jokingly that I’d do anything he’d ask me for. Little did I know that he would very seriously ask for a sexual favor, which I obviously declined. He got extremely angry and verbally abused me publicly. A few weeks later he brought this talk back, slammed me against a wall and tried to force himself onto me. Scary bastard. Overall the guy had no respect towards women, and what shocked me the most was that he had many female friends who all saw him in a positive light. I tried warning them but they would remain as his friends, even when he’d call them w**res in public for no reason.

I'd like to add that the statement "I'd do anything you ask me for" could easily be interpreted as an invitation or confirmation when the guy was looking for that. I don't know how the situation was, so I'm speaking more generally. What I mean is, that when someone is interested in another person, they don't directly ask for sex. Instead, they probably approach the situation gradually, making attempts to get closer and interpreting signals to see if the interest is mutual or not. Given that, especially if the guy was filled with hope, the quoted part could be seen as confirming all hopes only to shatter them right after. That doesn't excuse anything, of course. It is however important to be aware that with the unequal relationship between men and women in this regard misinterpreted signals, even without any ill intend, can lead to bad or even horrible experiences. So it would be good to always be aware that the other may be trying to interpret everything you do in hope of a confirmation. He may even misinterpreting the slightest possible hint if only he is desperate enough. I hope my intention is clear - I'm not victim blaming you or anyone. The guy is an a*hole and you are not at fault for anything. I just think it's important to be aware that a guy may try to interpret any interactions between you for a confirmation to get closer. While it may be very clear for you that you have never done anything to indicate interest, in the guys head that may be different and he may not be aware of how much his mind tricks him to think you did. Nothing can turn you back into a hormone driven animal like the sex drive. Of course one should work against that, but you never know how much someone is successful, or even willing to do so. Ever seen 21&Over? Super Bad? And all other college party films? Back when I was in college in America, the way guys viewed college girls went to extremes due to these films. It still does today. Pretty much the goal for guys in college is to get laid. Not all guys sure but many have this idea ingrained to their minds. Frat culture and toxic masculinity continues to plague in American colleges; especially party schools. For Koreans in this context, Hollywood films portray women as "sexually open" or "easy" hence many Korean men are brainwashed with that idea. Not all men, but it still creates a fantasy in their minds that they can lay with "easier western women who flaunt their bodies" before they get married. But this isn't just a Korean thing, you see this in other cultures too. I really wish to say that Korea is a great country. It has its charms. But we cannot have false ideas that it is a utopia. Even in countries that are rated as "the safest in the world" like Japan and Canada, you're never truly safe.

It's the same here in Japan, and the police is similar to South Korea's. There's a lot of victim blaming and they often side with the Japanese national. If you defend yourself and physically attack your aggressor, they can go against you and sue you instead. 🤷🏻‍♀️🙄

Unfortunately it seems that at this point in time there is NO support for the (foreign) women who are victims of sexual assault. It is my understanding the even the organizations listed in this video are simply collecting data rather than providing the important and necessary services victims sorely need. Doctors are not always willing to see them - why? Are they afraid to become involved in court cases to provide evidence of rape? Psychologists, lawyers and such are costly. Victims cannot afford them. Female police officers, detectives, investigators - where are they and why do they seem to look down on the victim as if it's her fault? Why are the rapists being freed after investigation only to become repeat offenders? Is it because of the delay in reporting of the incident therefore there is scanty evidence of a crime? Korea is sorely behind the times in helping victims. Is it because of a general attitude that women are less than men? There is MUCH that needs to be improved in Korea to help ALL women victims of sexual assault.

yes people need to know korea is not all rainbow and happiness. I went to korea in 2016 and I stayed at a hotel. Not a motel. A proper well known hotel (an higher end hotel) and I noticed a small red light from the TV at first I thought it is just the TV light because TV in the front have that light but I look closer to it and touch and and sure enough there was a spy cam on the TV. Nothing happened to me be I felt violated and disgusted as I change in front of the TV many times so I went to the police right away and report it and the police say they will look for it. And I ask who will be held responsible for it and they say the hotel is not held responsible because there is not much evidence who put the camera there. So I ask then nothing will be done to it? And they said yeah nothing can be done. And I ask then should other hotel guest know about it? And the police assured me saying they want to other guest to know about the situation. Then I went back to the hotel to collect my things, the hotel managers pretended nothing happened and didn't say anything and didn't look me in the eye. There was no compensation or anything. I paid the 5 night hotel fee and left. But I still want to make sure of the other guest know about it because I don't believe the hotel so the very next day I wore a black cap and went back the hotel and stayed there then I waited for a guest on the same floor and when they open the door I ask if they know about the situation and the guest said "No! No one told me anything!" And she was shocked and disgusted then both of us went down and confront the hotel but the hotel called the police and called me trespassing and somehow I was sent to the police and I didnt pay anything or go to jail or anything but they slap me with a warning that if I go there again I will have to go to jail. And I was like for real? Not only you lied to me saying you will tell the guest because thats the least you can do and I'm trespassing? To this day the hotel is thriving and no news of it being on the news and I'm disgusted. This is speculation but I feel like the hotel know something about it as it is in the TV I don't think someone can easily put it in the TV because it was specifically put there

Yup. During my first year in Korea, a guy I was on a date with dragged me into a motel. I kept trying to pull away and told him to let go. People passing by did nothing, they just kept walking. I later learned that Korean people don't normally get involved in domestic issues- even if they happen in the middle of the street. I later passed by a couple in the middle of an altercation- both were Korean. The guy was yelling and hitting his girlfriend and the girl just stood there crying. A crowd surrounded them, but no one did anything, they just watched.

I remember going to a night club for the first time on my friend’s birthday. I was 19 years old going to a hongdae club with bunch of my friends. I just wanted to have fun. But some random dude started to hug me behind and slowly tried to lift up my shirt. I tried to prevent him from going too far and next thing he tried to do, he tried to kiss me. He kept saying to my ear saying ‘it’s ok. It’s ok.’ I was not ok. I avoided the kiss and I typed in the notes saying ‘I don’t speak Korean’ to him. He saw that and took off. I felt so scared and my anxiety started to go up little by little. My girl friend took me outside for some fresh air. She told me that ‘random men will come up to you and touch you whichever club you go to.’ This was the first and last time I ever went to a night club. I told my 2 closeted friends about this incident and they comforted me. Now I’m 26 and it’s been 3 years since I left Korea. My co workers and friends from Korea would always ask me why I don’t have a boyfriend and my answer is ‘I don’t want one because I like being single.’ My co workers would tried to take me to bars and find a guy for me but I told them that I just wanted to go home and sleep. It’s gets annoying but I don’t want to cause any problems since they are all older than me.

My first visit to Korea, I was seated on a bus and had an ahjussi sit beside me. He kept moving closer until I was squashed up against the wall and suddenly he was groping my chest - it was painful and unexpected, I was so shocked. There is this unspoken rule that foreigners are looked upon as noisy and troublesome and that we shouldn't make a scene because it will piss people off, so I got off the bus but he followed me. I'm lucky it was my actual stop and I was meeting a friend, her son called out my name and ran towards me so the ahjussi took off. I told my friend what happened and she said, 'If that happens again, scream. Make a noise. The bus driver will be forced to hold the guy until the police arrive.' As a foreign resident, sadly, I don't have much faith in the police here. They always blame the foreigner. Besides, people on the bus saw it happening. Except for one middle school student who looked scared, the rest looked at me like I was filth.

I'm Japanese, and I'm having a problem with this lately. These people come to Japan on vacation, and then they go to the Korean areas in Japan, and they hit on women (minors, etc.) who are into K-pop and Korean culture. Even if it is discovered after the fact, they go back to their home countries and there is nothing the police can do about it because they have no contact information. The Japanese media is so concerned about international relations between Japan and Korea that they hide the nationality of these Koreans in their reports. The number of victims is increasing because the girls who yearn for Korea are not made aware of the trap. I think we need to let people know what is really happening and not just a dream in a Korean drama.

Yeah, I’ve heard of this happening for a while. I’m Korean and it’s disgusting that these men would come to a foreign country and take advantage of those who have genuine interest in their country. I think that a lot of Korean men and the law enforcement that work like complicit perpetuate the toxic masculinity that is very harmful to women. Even though I once lived in Japan and left the country due to a similar reason portrayed in this video, I would even not consider living in Korea as a woman in the first place.

I love Seoul and I have been living on and off there since 2011. But living there changed a lot of my behavior because of sexual harassment or things I got taught from my Korean friends to keep myself save. I heard from every single foreign girl I know (and in 11 years you get to know many girls) that they have been followed/stalked by at least one Korean guy. I was followed home at night (but decided to go to a 24h coffeeshop near my home instead , to not show that person where I live), I was stalked online for over 2 years (I got daily messages from the same person, trying to figure out what I was doing and where I was - I didn't respond once, but he still keeped going). In 2011 I went to a really crowed club and a guy grabbed me from behind and put his hand down my dress. I elbowed him really hard and got free that way. Since then I never wore a dress or skirt to a club again. There were a few situations were guys tried to get me to go home/ to a Hotel with them, but I luckily could escape safely. I'm pretty tall and I also speak Korean almost fluently, that also helped me in many situations. Some things I learned while living in Seoul that might help people there: - My korean friends always make sure to write each other the plate number of the taxis they take and they make sure that they message/call each other when they arrive home. A lot assaults are happening in taxis. In order to keep save try to do something similar with your friends. - Watch your drinks. Honestly this is sadly a thing you should do in every country in the world if you are female. - Always go clubbing with reliable friends, that will watch you and help you if needed. - Never show anyone you barely know where you live. Many Korean guys offer to take you home, it's a polite thing to do, they wanna make sure that you get home save most of the time. But still be careful who you show where you live. - Watch out for 물카s(hidden cameras) in public bathrooms and Motels. Even through many public bathrooms are super clean in Korea, I try to avoid using them. There are a bunch of videos on KZbin on how to spot these Cameras. - When you are spending more time than a short holiday in Korea, try to get to know basic Korean that helps you to call for help and call out people directly so they can't ignore you. - Speaking Korean will also help you to ask your Korean friends for advice in some situations you are not sure about. Koreans tend to word things different and less direct then some western country's do. If you are unsure of someones intentions, try to ask a Korean friend about it. There are also a many Koreans that are fluent in English. Its a bit harder to find them, but there are ways (like meet ups and so on). It took me a lot of time to find good friends that will always be there for me and stand up for me no matter what, but it is definitely possible. - Be also aware of foreignes in Korea. I have experienced quite a lot of harassment from foreign guys living in Korea as well. In one situation my friend and I had to ask some Korean guys to pretend to be with us in order to get away. - Be careful where you go out at night. I used to avoid certain areas and clubs ( for example I learned to avoid many itaewon clubs, because a lot of Koreans are looking for foreigners in these clubs). Speaking Korean I try to go to clubs where people wouldn't necessarily look for foreigners. - Also be careful with Koreans that are obsessed with foreign girls. There is still this idea of "riding the white horse" in Korea and foreign women are often fantasized by many Korean man (same for western guys who have this idea about asian woman). They think foreign girls are easy going and easy to get. So if there are any red flags, rather stay away. - If anything happens to you, call the police right away! Also if you have friends that speak englisch and Korean try to get them to help you translate! Everyone has different experiences, but I so far had only good ones with the Korean police. Calling the police is always scary (especially if its you first time - I never had called the police before, even in my home country-.-), but often they are friendly and try to help you.

I had many fun experiences (for example: one time I ended up on a private party of GDragon) and I only had one really bad experience in a club in Korea, the one I described before. Other than that, nothing super bad ever happened to me. A few situations made me feel uncomfortable, but I made sure to leave before anything could have happened. My mom always made sure to teach me what to look out for when I go out and how to protect myself (like going with friends that will look out for me, watching my drink all times, knowing self-defense and how to say no directly and so on) + I barely drink alcohol and therefore never get really drunken. The problem with Korea is, that it feels pretty safe and the image of KDramas and Kpop Idol behavior makes many foreigners be less careful. There are many nice and decent guys in Korea, not everyone is bad. Just be careful like you would in any other country or place as well when you go out and try to avoid people that specifically are looking for foreigners.

I know a girl who is American who moved to Korea around 8 years ago. She has posted several times about the sexual harassment and SA she’s dealt with while leaving there. Mind you she’s an Asian. Definitely was eye opening the stories she mentioned, and making it aware Koreans will grab at you.

Sexual harassment is extremely common in Korea, it‘s also connected to the fact that sexism is still very big in Korea and there is low respect for woman. Men think they can do whatever they want to females and there are many creepy and perverted guys in Korea. They are actually exactly like animals nothing less. Not trying to say that they are all bad but I would be extremely careful. In Korea having male friends who are actually kind and good is kinda rare and they always want to date you. I can’t imagine how terrifying the nightlife is there but I will never ever experience the nightlife in Korea anyways. I‘m glad that I have anxiety and grew up in a strict and conservative family where I was never really allowed to do anything. I‘m so sorry that this happened to these woman it must be incredibly disgusting and horrible to go through this but I applauded their bravery and that they bring this issue up more to the surface and that this will be talked about! The police is really shitty in Korea and as a foreigner they will absolutely do nothing when something like this happens to you since they don’t care much about foreigners! All I can say is be careful everyone. Korea is not what you see in dramas and don’t get fooled. The men there are exactly as shitty as the men in other countries. Be careful where you go, with who you go and who you befriend. I personally will definitely not go to any club or club district when I visit Korea. It‘s to dangerous and not enjoyable anyways because they just want seggs and nothing else. Be careful ladies.

In 2019, I got sent to the police station in Seocho because I drunk man in the street tried to attack me. They let him go and kept me at the station until the following day. Not one person spoke English. A complaint was made by my company and the following week, they made a formal apology and advised they would get employ English speakers. I went back in 2022 and once again another issue and got sent to the same police station, where they locked me up for 14 hours. Nearly four years later and still not one English speaker working there. I don’t believe a word of what this guy says!

Living in South Korea for little over a year, I observed that young guys seem to take being with a foreign girl as a challenge to brag about ("riding a white/black horse"). Then there are those who heavily fetishize foreign women as they are seen as promiscuous. I mostly had bad experiences with older men, and during the day (so people blaming women for walking outside after dark can sh*t up). They usually asked me if I was Russian because they seemed to think every Russian woman was a prostitute who would willingly go with them or something. Then they told me some bs stories about their kids wanting to learn English (English is NOT my native language), unintentionally changing their story multiple times during the mostly one-sided conversation, to get me to go home with them. It often happened in the subway, but not always. One time, a drunk older man (they are often drunk and especially in groups that's when you get insulted and catcalled while only walking by the most) sat beside me in the subsay and started to talk to me in broken English, slurring his speech to the point that I could not understand a thing and only repeatedly looked at my friend who I was with in confusion. Like all the other times before, people around us claerly saw and heard what was happening but they chose to ignore it. It got to a point where that dude grabbed my thigh (it was summer, very hot) and only then a younger Korean woman stepped in, asked him what he was doing and told me to get up so she could sit beside him to hold him in check. Unfortunately, he got really aggressive, pulling her hair and hitting her. That's when people finally reacted to the situation and when that old pig tried to leave the train he was literally bodyslammed by a bigger Korean man who then held him with the help of some other men until police arrived. I don't know what happened afterwards since I didn't think I could contribute anything to the situation and was also in shock, so my friend and I bailed out of there. Thinking back, I am still partly thankful because it was the only time while living in Korean that people stood up for me so it made me regain at least some faith in humanity.... the Korean club experience is also something. It can be really fun but dudes are getting way too close and too touchy way too fast and often don't take no for an answer. We usually went in groups so we could shield each other, but having a d*ck poking your back still spoils the evening. ....

It's the same in most countries. Even in the 21st century women are still second class citizens in most parts of the world. Ladies, please learn self defense. Even if you are shy and timid. yes people need to know korea is not all rainbow and happiness. I went to korea in 2016 and I stayed at a hotel. Not a motel. A proper well known hotel (an higher end hotel) and I noticed a small red light from the TV at first I thought it is just the TV light because TV in the front have that light but I look closer to it and touch and and sure enough there was a spy cam on the TV. Nothing happened to me be I felt violated and disgusted as I change in front of the TV many times so I went to the police right away and report it and the police say they will look for it. And I ask who will be held responsible for it and they say the hotel is not held responsible because there is not much evidence who put the camera there. So I ask then nothing will be done to it? And they said yeah nothing can be done. And I ask then should other hotel guest know about it? And the police assured me saying they want to other guest to know about the situation. Then I went back to the hotel to collect my things, the hotel managers pretended nothing happened and didn't say anything and didn't look me in the eye. There was no compensation or anything. I paid the 5 night hotel fee and left. But I still want to make sure of the other guest know about it because I don't believe the hotel so the very next day I wore a black cap and went back the hotel and stayed there then I waited for a guest on the same floor and when they open the door I ask if they know about the situation and the guest said "No! No one told me anything!" And she was shocked and disgusted then both of us went down and confront the hotel but the hotel called the police and called me trespassing and somehow I was sent to the police and I didnt pay anything or go to jail or anything but they slap me with a warning that if I go there again I will have to go to jail. And I was like for real? Not only you lied to me saying you will tell the guest because thats the least you can do and I'm trespassing? To this day the hotel is thriving and no news of it being on the news and I'm disgusted. This is speculation but I feel like the hotel know something about it as it is in the TV I don't think someone can easily put it in the TV because it was specifically put there

@@benravenwood8535 In the Philippines we don't have any vulgar terms towards foreigners. We just call Caucasians "Puti" which just means white or "Kano" from Americano (American). Although, in Japan calling them "白人" hakujin carries a disrespectful tone, ours isn't the same. No matter where they come from, we respect our tourist because they are our countries' guest and try to give them our best treatment. I know those Korean men who assault these foreign women don't represent all Korean men. It's still embarrassing for South Korea to be known for this issue since most of these foreign women are the daughters of the people who helped liberate South Korea from the communist north. I think it's better to go to embassy (according to their nationality/the country where they are from), one of embassy's responsibility is to help & to support the protection of their citizen in foreign country. Nope. They don’t. They’ll provide you with resources available in the country, but they won’t help much beyond that. So this is not the most effective and best option. I do think letting the embassy know is a good idea, but they will not help you in any substantial way.
