We've reacted to 5 different versions of U.S. National Anthem today. (Actually six but had to remove one of them because... copyright issue damn it) Each of them had a very unique style to it and was very interesting to watch it all! Very different from Korean culture.

Fun fact for you but probably also a shocker: That "performance" by Whitney Houston in 1991 was 100% LIPSYNCED. Not to take away from the fact that she sounded like that during the pre-recording, but the microphone on that stage you see was totally dead. Disappointing I know, but she's still one of the greatest singers of all time.

The lower note is supposed to be held the whole time. But everyone sings it with Whitney Houston's little addition and it's basically replaced the original in the mainstream.

@@Jaems_Scott Yeah, they were both bad, but in very different ways. Christina's was bad because she oversang (as usual) had way too many unnecessary runs and was just all over the place. Plus she messed up the words, which is always a fail. But Fergie's was in my opinion worse than Christina because she was trying to sing it in a sexy, jazzy style which was a horrible idea. She was using a lot of open vowel sounds trying to give it a raspy and seductive tone which does NOT belong in the National Anthem. Also, she's not a natural jazz singer, and doesn't understand the natural flows and rhythms of that genre. So her words were not flowing together naturally, and she basically tried to scat "banner yet wave" which sounded ridiculous! But I have to say, neither of them were as bad as Rosanne Barr. Barr was singing it badly on purpose, screechy and off-key as a joke. She even grabbed her crotch and spit at the end.

At the time, how I remember it, there was a concern about the equipment sound and a decision was made that the television viewers were to hear the mostly prerecorded sound, and the live audience would her mostly her live version. It should be noted that those in attendance still rave about how great her performance was. I do feel that its unfair that you are implying that she cheated or somehow is not worthy of recognition for her talent when many artists use a heavy backing track for any live performance. It's not as if she was lip syncing to another person's voice a la Milli Vanilli

When I was a young kid I sang and performed a lot. And I was selected to sing the national anthem for the annual regional meeting of boy scouts (I can't remember what it was called). As you can imagine the idea of singing in the middle of a small stadium full of people made me very nervous. I ended up drinking tons of water because of my nerves. The performance was going super well but about halfway through I could feel something rising up in my throat. I tried to suppress it. It was working for a while. But as I sang "The bombs bursting in air" I burped the loudest burp you have ever heard. I finished the anthem and then I walked away completely mortified.

The melody is from an old bar/drinking song, made to be sung by drunk people. It can't be *that* difficult, can it? Any national anthem is designed to be sung by ordinary people. These these fancified versions for professional singers don't really count. I can sing it myself, with ease and in good tune, to the extent that it was meant to be sung. The only difficulty is remembering the words, since there is almost never an opportunity to actually sing it.

The lonely cat Whitney used playback for the anthem so she did sing that song live just not what the audience is hearing, however she did record it in one take like many of her other songs such as how will I know and I’m your baby tonight. Also she performed the anthem again fully live in 91 for her hbo special it’s pretty much just as good as the Super Bowl one.
