You girls are still quite young IMHO. The reason Japanese or at least myself ask things that are "obvious " is to "break ice" get conversation started. We don't use Moshi Moshi anymore but kind of like so. Confirming obvious things tells you I mean no harm and safe person. Having that "connection " established I can now get into more "real" issue or questions etc. It's a Japanese thing (especially older people)

The interview with the beautiful foreigner was interesting, Japanese customs are sometimes difficult to understand and visitors always know or don't take it seriously, but at the same time it is a wonderful culture that has charming places.
