This used to be the era where you could recognize a keyboard from it's unique sounds ... D50, M1, DX7 etc. Good times!! Now everything sounds the same and it doesn't matter what you get. Features and eye candy is what is all left when buying a keyboard.

This thing is way better than the Krome, I'm sad but it's true, I sacrificed the joystick for better sounds and keybed :'( Korg please don't delete my comment, learn from this and focus on the inside more than the outside next time. I own two Korg M1s each including Envision's "Plus One" expansion boards. All these years later, I still use the M1 as my main keyboard along with a laptop of VSTs and some other gear. I have ten keyboards. The lack of aftertouch on the Chrome is a major disadvantage. I perform live in rock bands primarily, and the aftertouch allows me to add vibrato as I'm playing to be more expressive. I use it for the sax, flute, violin, synths and many other instrument sounds. I've checked out Korg's Legacy VST and agree the sound quality is generally very good. The M1 sounds I use the most are from the Envision Plus One board, and not found in the soft synth. I also make great use of .sysex bank from Visage I wish had been included in the VST. Korg, buy the rights and please add these 3rd party add-ons to your VST and newer keyboards, then people like me will so called "upgrade". Without these, an M1 is half an M1 to me. I haven't even found similar patches in the Kronos to these.

01/W Library please, will pay for that and maybe N364 also, thanks Korg.

I've been an M1 fan since the keyboard came out and I own two of them each expanded with Envision Plus One internal circuit boards, several sound collections from Korg and third party, and I also make extensive use of the Korg Legacy VST on my laptop, all for live performances. Though I'd love to upgrade to a newer Korg, until my favorite sounds can be duplicated properly on a newer Korg, it's unlikely to happen. A good part of the magic of the M1 is the great keyboard itself which includes aftertouch, a feature I use often. Even the original M1 presets made great use of aftertouch, and if the Krome doesn't have it, it's going to miss a lot of the magic. As other said, only 100 sounds? The best thing about the M1, like the DX7, is it was such a popular keyboard tons of 3rd party and factory sounds were available for it separately. Many of my favorite sounds, I haven't even heard anything similar out of the Kronos or new Yamaha Montage. For starters, the M1 sax is the best and most useful in a rock band that I've heard yet. I've tweaked it a bit to my liking. I often trigger it from my wireless Keytar on stage. I can play many classic rock songs with this sound. The Plus One board has an excellent Hammond I use just as often as I run dedicated organ modeling programs such as VB3 and B4 II. The best part is I assigned a foot pedal to speed up the Leslie. With the Plus One board, I have a fantastic Les Paul electric guitar, another sound I can't live without. It enables me to BE the 2nd guitarist in a rock band, covering many parts. I haven't heard another keyboard that could make as useful a sound. Not even remotely close, to the point I wouldn't even try. I've got a great flute, solo violin, great pipe organ (Plus One), etc. My most useful overall patch, an Oberheim OB-X brass/stringy patch that came from a 3rd party M1 collection. This sound was all over the 80s, yet even in dedicated Oberheim VSTs, I still find this patch covers more songs. A couple examples I use it on. Rush's Subdivisions, Journey's Separate Ways (the sound for the cords. I use a VST for the intro sound) Sounds better than what Rush has used live for the past 25 years. Anyway, the M1 has been invaluable to me. I'd love to see all of it's capabilities in a newer synth, especially one that is lighter weight.

I can't say that I am really happy about this. There are sounds that are in the Krome that are far better than these. I would personally like to see a new sound library that was made specifically for the Korg Krome. Something new , robust, wild and lush. Even if I have to pay for it. THAT IS WHAT I WANT. It's not just youtube compression. Korg has make a great job with this M1 library, and with the legacy M1. But as good as it sounds it will NEVER sound exactly the same as the real M1, the sounds and samples you can replicate but that exact original character... nope! That is why i'll never ever get rid of my T3 or my 01/W. That being said however, this library or the legacy collection are good enough substitutes for those sounds. Great job Korg!!!

I have purchased a M1 many months ago on ebay and even comparing the sounds shown here or from a friends X5D, the real M1 sounded fuller and richer than the replica sounds on Korgs other keyboards.

I don't blame you for not wanting to use a laptop on stage...I know a guy who drags around two hardware keyboards and a laptop...what a messy conglomeration that is! I don't miss gigging at all...but I still miss some of my old hardware, but it's too impractical for the studio..especially given my space constraints...not to mention the enormous cost. The resonance filter is something I find to be indispensable,as I always find it useful & it's pretty much a standard in all synths, these days.

No problem about the MB thing. As for the original M1,I was taken in by the built in sequencer & I wanted that feature more than anything, but always preffered the sounds of my old Korg DS-8 and especially my friend's Super JX-10 at the time. My old days with the M1 was a good learning experience, but the acoustic sounds were always painfully bad,to my ears. In fact,in watching old episodes of MacGyver, those terrible M1 acoustic sounds always stood out...but the synths were useful.

Ok, i see your point, sorry abut that. However Vintage Synth has the number in MBits, meaning 48 Mbits = 6 MBytes. I agree with you on the other synths, i wasn't implying the M1 was the best or warmest synth of it's time. Obviously the 01W is way warmer, and the waveshaping also helps a bit when used wisely on the patches. What i love about the old synths is the amazing sounds you can get sometimes with clever programing despite the small waveform memory. Some M1 and 01W sounds are still usable

Yes i'll have to agree on that. I had to struggle quite a bit to get some half usable pianos out of it back in the day, just wish i had the knowledge i have now back then, it would have really helped a lot. Of course the T3 soundset will always be better (the additional sample that is). That sax is still irreplaceable to me. But still with clever programing you could still get a lot of usable sounds out of it. And some unique ones too sometimes

According to SoundOnSound Magazine, the hardware vs. software comparison is nearly identical, but that the software version has less background noise. Unlike the original M1,the Legacy version has more effects, filter resonance and all of the expansion card sounds..so explain to me why the "character" of the hardware sound is so important and what exactly is this nuance of sound that only hardware possesses? By the way,I had the original M1 & O1/W keyboards
@jorgecardoso650811 жыл бұрын
I'm not saying the diference is huge, but there is a diference. Maybe if we could compare just the digital out of the hardware M1 with the soft version the diference would be minimum, but all the circuits of the signal converters to analog always color and ad something to the sound. I'm just saying the hardware to me has more punch and warmth to it. I still have the T3 and the M1 legacy so i can compare, and it's just what i hear. And i know i'm, not alone on this

If i have the need for different sound engines i'll rather take with me a whole rack tower of modules than vst's. So you get an idea i had the Legacy wavestation first and i liked the sounds so much that i had to get the real one (got a wavestation sr). Yes it's more limited than the vst but for me the sound and feel of it... it has to be hardware. You just can't beat the immediacy and reliability of it. For me the vst is good to record and to audition patches i want to put in the hardware one

The thing I never understood is Korg ported it's great M1 factory presets to the Krome, a budget synth, but not the Kronos which is their professional synth (like the M1 was). Many of the M1's presets took great advantage of the M1's aftertouch keyboard which had great action to it, no corners cut. The Krome lacks aftertouch, so how to you properly play the sounds? Also, I heard the action isn't so great on Chrome. Adding M1's patches to Kronos would be logical. Even better, a full emulator like the Korg Legacy programs. Us M1 owners want to "upgrade" to a better synth, not a worse one. But we don't want to give up our existing sounds we've had for decades.

Since I no longer have the Korg 01/W(it was damaged in shipping 16 years ago, thanks to UPS),I didn't remember what the ROM content was...so I had got my info from VintageSynth. Perhaps you should tell them to get their facts straight, because you're probably right about the MB amount of the 01/W. In any case I still hold to my statement about the M1's poor sound quality, because back in the 80's,companies like Roland and Kurzweil were far superior in terms of warmth,character..etc.,.

So that being said, there is no HUGE diference between the M1 and the 01W in terms of waveform memory. You also have the T3 with 8MB (more than the 01W), so memory means very little in the overall context. The character and sound of a synth is made by the samples PLUS the synth engine, filters, converters, etc. So will an M1, T3, O1W, Trinity, Etc library on the Krome or Kronos will sound EXACTLY like the original? No it will not!! Not better not worse, just a different character, warmth, etc...

I'm not implying anything, like i've said it's not better nor worse, just a little diferent character. That being said, i am and always will be a hardware guy. I'm a live player, i can understand the benefits of the hardware version for the studio, but for the road... You'll never catch me with a laptop on stage! And the resonance filter is also not the most important thing on the synth, at least for me. It depends on the sounds one use and type of music one uses the synth for i guess...

To make this great sounds people have to resort to crazy things like programing CREATIVITY!!! Today we have GB and GB of samples on a keyboard and always want more, more!!! Actually taking the time and bother to learn to use what you have and program those "robust, wild and lush" sounds you want...? Naahh, too much trouble right?? Only someone who have never actually used an M1 on the 80's/90's could show such total lack of consideration to the legacy of early Korg synt's. Peace!

And still have the T3, 01W, Trinity and the Korg legacy collection. Does the Legacy M1 has the same character as the Hardware M1? One word: NO Close but not the same. Really? The M1 sound library doesn't sound the same, simply because this library is not housed in the original M1 keyboard? Do you realize that all of the M1's sounds are sample-based and that they are comprised of only 4MB? There's nothing sophisticated or complex about the M1's samples & the only special thing about the M1(as it were)was that it was the first hardware workstation. The M1 sounds like ass,but the O1/W was a nice upgrade(48MB of ROM). Korg should be making a O1/W library, instead.

Yes i know that "all of the M1's sounds are sample-based and that they are comprised of only 4MB". You make some interesting statements: "The M1 sounds like ass"; "O1/W was a nice upgrade(48MB of ROM)." Very interesting indeed... If you know ANYTHING about these synths you would understand what i was trying to say... FIRST: there is more to a synth's sound and character than JUST the samples (and waveform memory) SECOND: The 01W is 6MB memory, the 01W pro/proX is 10MB. Get your facts right!!
