The KORG SQ-1 is an underrated studio tool. Anyone with any semi-modular synth should own at least one.

BIG PLUS on that!! I can recall a long time ago reading my mom’s Electronic Musician magazine, and it was one of first times for me, seeing Tangerine Dream’s 960, a gigantic behemoth of a 16 step CV sequencer!! I dreamed of manipulating those knobs with my own hands, and experiencing this antiquated gear for myself, meanwhile feeling sad. The likelihood was that I would never get the chance…. SO I am practically over the moon today, with joy for the fact that now there’s a 16 step sequencer that only costs 100$, and so many other pieces of modular gear, on the face of a wave of analog synth resurgence!! THANKS FOR SHARING!! Edit: I forgot.If you haven’t got control voltage you can simply utilize the SQ-1’s midi output and quantize options to put it into whatever key you might prefer: major or minor. I am stricken with the prejudice towards belief that minor keys go better with analog signals…

Thank you for this. I use a Doepfer Dark Time sequencer rather than the Korg SQ-1, but the principle is the same. For a lot of people starting out in electronic music, gear like this is their first acquisition, and the connectivity is not intuitive. There are many videos on KZbin about the groovy things that this synth and sequencer can do, but not much about connectivity. So thank you for being so helpful.

My pleasure! I did this video specifically because of the point you bring up! I don't have time to do many videos but when I do, they're usually instructional (although I'm not above videoing some performances...!) I'm glad it was helpful!

glad you covered the fact the filter needs its own trigger, what I do is plug loudcont out into fcgate in. achives same result with out needing a splitter on the model d.

Hello, my SQ-1 arrived today and I have a question regarding midi output. Testing the unit I'm using only the supplied midi adapter that came with the unit. I connected it to my Novation Bass Station 1 via USB cable only. It only plays sequence B not sequence A? Is my unit faulty or is this normal behavior using the supplied midi adapter? Found nothing in the manual regarding. Thank you .

Does it matter what kind of splitter to use if you don't have a Radio shack one for the korg sq1?
@jeffirokssynthchannel37475 ай бұрын
No - Splitters are generic; you can use whatever is available. The only requirement is that the input jack would need to be 3.5mm (1/8").

So Jeff, I turned on my Model D and all I get is a contentious tone, then I flipped the a440 switch to off as you have in the video and I patched it up as you did but noting happened when I pressed play on my SQ1. Any Ideas?

I know it's 3 months old but I had the same problem. Try changing the SQ-1s polarity. Of course you have already fixed it by this point

I have a strange question, so forgive me if is stupid: I have a sq-1 and a model D. sequencing the model D via cv I have my sequence. but, if I keep the midi via the beatsteppro playing with the pads transpose the sequence. it's not bad (it's interesting to transpose a sequence from the sq1 in such easy way) but I don't understand how the midi transpose the cv sequence instead to play.
@jeffirokssynthchannel37472 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've noticed pitch differences between CV & supposedly the same MIDI note, if that's what you're referring to. I'm not technical enough to explain it I'm afraid, but I'd suspect it's related to the way the two different methods identifies pitch from the tuning knobs on the SQ-1. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing was found in other similar devices.
@riccardotorri2 жыл бұрын
@@jeffirokssynthchannel3747 thank you. probably the cv sum his tension to the midi input. it's strange but useful.

can anyone help ,i have a model d and sq-1 set up with midi channel 1 .when i have the the sq-1 set to parallel settings only channel A is heard ,but if i set the midi on the D to midi channel 2 only channel B is now heard ? ,didnt think the korg had separate midi channel settings for each channel A/B? the korg plays both channels on my Erebus ,but that could be on a universal midi channel number ,which i dont think the model d does ?
@303g5 жыл бұрын
just found the answer A. In global parameter setting mode, you can use the 16 step buttons to specify the channel A MIDI channel (1--16), but the channel B MIDI channel is always assigned as one higher than the channel A MIDI channel.

Thanx for this info!! Is there a way to connect the SQ-1 while still being able to transpose sequences?
@jeffirokssynthchannel37476 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry - I don't think I understand. You can, of course, change the pitch of each note by turning the respective note's knob at any point to change sequence while being hooked up, and you can transpose the Model D at any point as well. The SQ1 is pretty much stuck in the key of C (using chroma mode can get you around this limitation a little). I think some folks have gotten around the limitation to a degree using extra hardware, but I'm not familiar with those methods. Anyway, I'm probably not answering your question. Again, my apologies!

No problem mate, thanx anyway :)

You actually can transpose it with a MIDI controller plugged in. I discovered it accidentally but hitting keys on a connected MIDI controller while a sequence is running definitely transposes the sequence.

@jeffirokssynthchannel37475 жыл бұрын
Connecting a MIDI keyboard to the Model D is pretty straight forward - Just connect a MIDI cable from the keyboard's MIDI Out jack to the Model D's MIDI In jack. Also, make sure the keyboard is transmitting to the same MIDI channel that the Model D is set to or nothing will happen!

Why would i use cv instead of midi im a noob
@LacklusterOfficial4 жыл бұрын
See that row at the top of the Model D? You can physically patch cables from the SQ-1's top row to the top row of the Model D, and that way you can get wayyy more complex sequences & modulations out of the Model D than with just outputting midi notes to it. That's why I bought a SQ-1 and can't wait to plug it in!
@pisotones23486 жыл бұрын
How do you set the CV range in the SQ-1?... 1V, 2V or 5V?
@JeffIrok6 жыл бұрын
You do that by pressing the pressing the Function button (which also serves as the Duty button) while pressing the 1V, 2V, or 5V button at the same time. If you only depress the Function button, the SQ1 will light up the button of the mode that it's currently in. The SQ1 is real cool in that if you're using both A and B separately, you can set one to one volt setting, and the other to another, or even to Hertz/V (8V) for synths like the MS20 that use Hz/V!
@pisotones23486 жыл бұрын

Hello Jefflrok! I tried it like that but I get a constant note when I plug the LC Gate
@jeffirokssynthchannel37476 жыл бұрын
Hhmm...Well, ONLY plugging the CV Gate into the LC gate will only get you the single note with no pitch variation, as I demonstrated in the video. If you're also connecting a CV Gate output of the SQ1 to the OSC 1V/OCT input of the Model D and you're still only getting one note throughout all of the SQ1's notes, check a couple things: (1) That the SQ1's notes are varied (as opposed to all of them being turned up or down), and (2) make sure the patch cords you're using are working properly. Yeah, these are pretty obvious things but you want to rule the obvious out before you start suspecting a hardware failure. If these two steps check out, try connecting the two devices with a MIDI cord to see how they respond. I'm not certain where to go after that, other than hooking up the SQ1 to another CV device (if you have one) to see if it works properly, and hooking up another CV sequencer or keyboard (if you have one) to the Model D to determine which device might have the problem. Good luck!
