Civilization seems to be pretty commonly known among them, both Pekora and Fubuki also got the reference in their playthrough. And while Roberu didn't seem to really know the game, he had a hunch that it was Civilization (even before the chat told him). The fact that it is a time consuming game is well known even if they didn't play the game themselves. If anything, the one who didn't get it was Gura, which was more surprising.

Even Nintendo of America used to exercise their copyright protection to the full extent they could before toning it down a bit (but still doing it to an extent). Nintendo of Japan even recently told streamers they *cannot* restream the E3 Nintendo Direct. Which confused western audiences as that tweet got around with no confirmation from Nintendo of America about shit, and I still don't think they said anything but it was very likely just meant for the Japanese audience. But they go around taking down harmless fan games and whatnot, sometimes even releasing much worse versions of the ideas they took down, i.e. Mario 99.

Thanks for the extended clip! Korone finally got around to playing _The Henry Stickmin Collection,_ and the payoff was even better than I anticipated. Fortunately, she was able to use the subtitle mod without incident and enjoyed the story progression to its fullest. Now all we need is Senchou's playthrough of this game. Marine's reactions could easily be the best of them all.

For the people wondering about why the Holo girls worry about copyright, blame Nintendo. A case I can think of is when they pursued a copyright case against Sasaki Saku of Nijisanji who happened to play a lot of Nintendo games. Nintendo is very draconic when it comes to copyright and they set a precedent for it.

To my understanding, Japan doesn't have good - if any - Fair Use laws, so you'll often see in anime that if they are trying to make a reference of some kind, they'll blur/pixelate the reference, or put black bars over the eyes of characters etc. This isn't just for comedic value, it's to avoid getting into trouble. I may be misremembering here, but I'm pretty sure the animator of that one anime that had a Pekora lookalike in it had to apologise for putting her in there without express permission. This is in spite of the fact that Pekora herself watched and enjoyed it. It's not just Nintendo, but moreso any Japanese company that the girls are probably worries about seeing it and getting mad. They don't realise that games and references this on-the-nose are perfectly fine basically everywhere else in the world.

People keep mentioning Japan's Copyright law is why she's surprised references are allowed. But I've definitely seen Anime and Japanese developed games that make references before (I know some games get references added in localization, but I don't mean that). Though they don't do things like literally take a jingle or anything like that like the LoZ reference did, they usually play different notes so you know what it's a reference to but it's not straight up the original music.
