I remember first seeing AOT and watching this scene of Eren attacking Marley, thinking "How is this ANY better than what Marley did to Paradis?! Really hard to understand how they think this is the right thing to do." I now understand that was the whole point of the show 😅
@ohthatswild17555 күн бұрын
Well, I always seen the show as a portrayal of how dangerous segregating peoples is. It is so easy to point the finger at the other side and call them monsters, which in turn allows most people to easily do irredeemable things to the other side. Marley effectively convinced all nations that it was rather them or Paradis, meaning their declaration of war was a declaration of eradication. Marley made a war that can only be won when the other side is completely exterminated, and Eren just accepted those terms.
@lukaslambs57804 күн бұрын
Yep, it’s not any better.
@slappytheclown44 күн бұрын
Yeah that was the entire point of the Liberio Raid, Eren and the Scouts essentially did to Marley what Marley had done to Paradis. It's part of what makes me love the show and others with themes like it; there are no black and white characters just like the real world.

One of the best scenes in the whole show. It's difficult to put into words the ammount of thematic parallels, call backs, and foreshadowing Isayama packs into a single scene between just two people talking in a basement and a person doing what its basically an info dump above. A masterclass.
@RedFloyd4695 күн бұрын
I wonder if Isayama was inspired by Hitchcock's famous analogy of the "Bomb under the table" for writing scary and dramatic scenes that revolve around conversations. For those who don't know: Hitchcock described his effective method of creating suspense with an analogy that goes as follows: Picture two people (characters in a fictional story) talking to one another at a table. They have a whole conversation, and after 5 minutes pass, the table suddenly erupts in an explosion, killing both characters. This is certainly a "plottwist" or something along those lines, and effective at shocking the audience, but it lasts very shortly as far as emotions go. The audience might also believe themselves to have been robbed of something, or to have wasted their time listening to the conversation. Now, instead, picture the same conversation, however, after 1 minute passes, the camera moves down under the table, and shows a bomb with a ticking timer. Then the camera pans up to the characters again. The audience now KNOWS something really bad is going to happen soon, or is implied to happen. Will the bomb be defused, will the characters finish their conversation in time? All of a sudden, the specific details of the conversation both start to stop mattering in comparison with the weight of the bomb's narrative importance AND start to matter immensely, as these details might be what cease the conversation and defuse the bomb. Maybe the characters will fail to stop the bomb BECAUSE of the details. And then the bomb explodes. Hitchcock didn't quite explain it as extensively as I did here, but that's the basic gist of it. The REVEAL of the bomb under the table, and the sudden suspense this creates, is what drives the audience's attention. It's what makes that scene entertaining, if dark. Now look at AoT's scene. We have a building full of people. We have TWO titan shifters sitting in said building. We have the pov character of Falco who has been with us for several episodes now and who we have come to like because of his genuine likeable personality. (We don't want him to get hurt at all). We even have a bunch of CHAIRS to the side, almost explicitly referencing the bomb under the table analogy. Both characters have a conversation. From Falco's point of view initially, nothing is wrong, nothing is expected. But Eren reveals the bomb under the table. HE is the bomb. And for that matter, so is Reiner. The music swells. We, the audience, KNOW shit is about to go down. Things start moving rapidly. Willy's speech increases the tension further. Then, a glimmer of hope. Willy reveals the lie. Willy reveals his sense of guilt. Eren doesn't antagonize. Reiner begs for forgiveness. Eren (sort of) forgives him, says 'we're the same' and 'you never had a choice'. And then that final, gutwrenching, ultimate climax: "I just keep moving forward." The bomb explodes. Eren literally explodes a building. ABSOLUTE CINEMA. If Miyazaki was NOT directly inspired by this analogy, it would surprise me, for how close it is to the original comparitively. But if so, that just speaks to his own genius in this regard. He knows a scene is only good if it has an effect on the audience, in the short or in the long run. Tl;DR: Science proves this scene is peak.
@yurkdawg5 күн бұрын
You must have watched the same KZbin analysis video that I did equating Hitchcock's "Bomb under the table" to this AOT episode (?) Since I watch every AOT video I ever find on YT, I don't remember the name of the video or the YT channel/author. But I distinctly remember a video going literally line-by-line over Eren's/Reiner's conversation, interspersed with black-and-white footage of Hitchcock explaining the concept (which btw is basically just another word for "Chekhov's Gun." 😉)

AOT allows for so many different valid readings into scenes like these ones. Like I didn't read the Eren and Reiner scenes as Eren necessarily forgiving Reiner, but more so pushing Reiner to tell Eren the main reason why he broke the walls. Not because Reiner didn't know it was a bad thing and not because of Marleys brainwashing (tho still a reason, i just dont think its the main one) but because Reiner wanted to do it. Same with Eren and the rumbling. There is a million reasons for why Eren did the rumbling some for valid than others, but again the main reason (imo) is because Eren wanted to do it. Thats why Eren says to Reiner that they are the same, they both did horrible acts because they wanted to.

yess, specially because both not only wanted to do it but in lots of ways lied to the outside world and themselves, talking about a "noble motive" (saving the world, freeing eldia) to justify their actions, even when both knew what they were doing, even if I didn't undeestand it in my first watch now it's crystal clear for me, but koroko's interpretation was really beautiful

I think the video from 39:00 onward should be shared across the world. The idea at least. The world is cruel. It's so easy to point blame at one group or another without ever looking at their situations. It's so easy to say "youre the bad guy" without ever asking why they're the way they are. There's so much to unpack that I dont have time to type, but this. This is absolutely beautiful, Koroto
@rafaelcante57315 күн бұрын
43:18 I think u missed the part where Willy says he doesn’t want to die because he was born in this world Eren was a little shook. And I interpreted as him reflecting himself a little bit to Willy since he said the same words and having some hope that the war might stop but Willy then announces the declaration of war and we see Eren get disappointed. Probably because it was reaffirming him once again that everything he saw was going to happen
@AM17titan5 күн бұрын
he explained it in the video? its just that you have a wrong interpretation of it...... it was eren who accepted the fact that he is about to kill those people who also holds same ideology as him 'because i was born into this world' , eren became a monster at this moment. eren doesnt get disappointed or anything.... he already said to reiner at the start of the conversation that he was going to kill them lol

@@AM17titan Eren very clearly set up the whole confrontation with Reiner in that basement so he could listen to Willy's speech. He had no intention of attacking until after Willy's speech was wrapped up, and in that moment Eren genuinely may have called off the attack if Willy had called off his own. But Willy made the declaration and that was that. Willy was afraid of the unknown, and he was willing to use his status to drag the entire rest of the world into a war over it. I have to wonder how things might have changed if Eren got a chance to talk things over with Willy 1 on 1 like with Reiner. Thinking about it now it's honestly a bit of a plot hole how Willy acted as if the peace negotiations never happened. Or maybe he thought whatever goal he was trying to achieve was more important than his own life. I wonder what that goal could have entailed, because it certainly wasn't peace.
@AM17titan4 күн бұрын
@ he literally set up the conversation obviously to listen willy’s speech BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY TO MEET REINER…. Who told you eren would have stopped if willy said anything otherwise ? Is there any hint ? No ! There isn’t any Eren just flat out declared to Reiner that he is the bad guy and he has come for revenge If what you said was true then why did eren literally said at the start of the conversation ‘I came here to do the same thing you did ?’ He even went out to say ‘it’s because I had no choice’ That whole conversation with Reiner is eren taunting him with questions He says ‘if your mission was to save the world , then you didn’t had any choice right ?’ After this Reiner broke down and admitted that there was a choice for him to take but he didn’t took that choice That day, wall was broken SOLELY BECAUSE OF HIM and not Annie or berthold And what is eren’s reply ? ‘Like I thought I am the same as you’ ….

Of course i know that you can't show the episode a lot or you get bamboozled so this is just a general comment, also i know how difficult it is to talk about AOT in general. Did I miss it, or did you forget to mention the Willy is wearing a wall religion necklace, which to me implies continuous coordination with the king of the walls. I still remember the first time I watched this episode. I knew exactly what Eren was going to do, but as the conversation between him and Reiner continued, I just kept thinking, almost pleading, "Don't do it, Eren." 22:29 I also started to wonder why Yelena didn't just drop a grenade/trigger on door = blow them up while they're in the hole Sure it would be LOUD,and some civilians would die, but if only triggered by reinforcements rushing in to save them - at least it was just to stall them until triggered But Paradis could in theory have blasted two of Marley's Warriors in one simple trap

If one of them survives then they could shift and get out. But if they're both alive they won't want to kill the other.
