I've seen a fully built model of this kit which was the first off the line and built by a very respected member of the Kotare team. Comparing it against the Tamiya spitfires taking into account quality of the moulding and not accuracy, I'd say the Kotare kit is a little on the soft side and obviously there are less parts too. However, given the price this kit is commanding at the moment, I'd personally spend the extra bit of of money on the Tamiya kit any day. The hype around the Kotare kit seems to stem from the fact that most of the team are ex Wingnut Wings designers/managers and the same occured when Meng release the 1/32 Fokker Dr.1 and when Border Models released the Lancaster. Although The designs for those kit were originally by Wingnut Wings, the moldings were not or if they were, a lot of re-engineering was required. I'm not by any means saying the Kotare Spitfire is no good, granted it is a nice looking representation, I just don't buy into the hype and having seen the kit in person both in sprue form and fully built, I just know where I'd prefer to spend my money based on what I've seen.

Brilliant in the box review. The best I’ve seen. The kit looks absolutely first class. Superb attention to detail. I think Kotare have got this just right. I’m pleased they didn’t put an engine or gun bays in. Sometimes, to much added detail can bog you down with a build. Thanks for posting.

There have been a few comments on other channels about the price of the kit considering it has no engine or detailed gun bays - an important point is that the level of detail that the kit does contain saves you £20+ (easily) on the need to buy aftermarket products.

Heavily disagree, if you ever get up to an airplane with proper flush rivets they are almost impossible to see. You definitely wouldn't see them even in 1/32.

You are out of date on your prices. Check the price of a newly tooled full featured kit with engine, like the 1:32 GWH P-40B. From a discount supplier it's $170.

It appears the release of Kotare's kit has put the cat amongst the pigeons and divided opinions, where in actuality, it needn't. If you can afford this kit, and you want it, buy the thing - period. If you cannot afford it, Hobbyboss offer a fantastic Spitfire kit for a lot less. In this Country (New Zealand) the Kotare kit comes in at the $200.00 mark, which puts it in the same ballpark as the Tamiya 32 scale Spitfires. I go back to what I said above - if you want this kit, and you feel the need for a Mk.1 (mid) airframe, knock yourself out. If, on the other hand, you are after value for your hard earned dollars, and feel (as I do) the Rolls Royce Merlin powerplant is the beating heart (not to mention that hair raising sound as a Spit flies overhead) of this aircraft, and you are not concerned about the type of airframe, Tamiya offer what remains the superior kit (again, my opinion, and mine alone). Several times now I have heard and seen the Spitfire fly overhead, and that sound still resonates with me. I brought the Kotare kit, and had a good look through it. The quality is superb. You will not loose anything by buying this kit (and feel you can justify the price of it compared to Tamiya's products). I have onsold my kit. I wish all those modellers who do buy and build this kit great things - I am certain there are those out there who will really do this fantastic product justice. I just want that beating heart.

You can buy the new 1:24 Airfix Mk.IX for around £10 less, with complete engine, no weirdly moulded cockpit sides with elongated oxygen tanks, and also nice, oil canned surface detail. I don't think it's so much 'affording' this, but that far nicer is available in a larger scale, for less.
