Join Rondell Sheridan and I, as we explore how KPop music videos are accelerating the rise of global music video budgets. This incredible phenomenon is bringing hope to the rather pessimistic production world that we have here in the west. As we continue to heal from the budget cuts that went hand and hand with the digital music era, we have a pretty awesome future to look forward to. Don't believe me? Watch the video.

I agree KPOP is definitely a visual pleasure, but the views KPOP gets arent raw actual views their mainly from ads and fans streaming videos which is a culture we dont have in the west and I'm not a hater Im a kpop fan more specifically a Ateez and NCT 127 fan and I know how because their fans are mainly very dedicated and also young outcast kids (myself included) who have nothing else better to do than stream the video on multiple platforms especially fans from South East Asian who stream. And theres currently no comparison for the vocal talent in the west to Korea where alot of the idols cannot sing live well. Korea needs to spend more money on vocal trainers if they want to be taken more serious because they will be exposed once they come to the west more and dont have the flashy lights and back up vocals. For example Blackpink got alot of hate for their american premiers not being as good as expected

I'm literally having goosebumps when the both of you just enumerates the facts behind the rise of KPop. It justifies that the people who consumes those masterpieces aren't just a bunch of 'crazy fangirls/fanboys, but a prospective market being born in an industry of music and film making where people oftentimes turn a blind eye with. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. It was a great watch. You discussed your points in great comparison between two related topics. Impressive job!

it's the kpop business model. they rely on market activation on a big scale. they need their fans to talk about the music in a way that's seemingly penetrates and interalizes in their daily lives. that's why they create those big budget MV. they can get fans to talk about outfits, concepts, philosophy behind choreos, there's even marketplaces in south korea that sells very specific clothing/accessories/items that the idols use on their MV. so yeah, the MVs are great pieces of art and consumption media, but it's also a very specific functional media for marketing. there are long checklists for the MV to function, thus justified the big budget. that's what the western music forgot. they don't do this marketing thing that deep.

YES! look im American but theres a reason why for over a decade ive been drawn to kpop music and music videos. They provided the elements that Jos described that American pop was just not giving me. As someone with Latin American heritage, the Latin market provided the music aspects that I loved but in terms of aesthetics that market also it didn't give me what I wanted. Ive been noticing for a while even a little bit before BTS blew up that MVs both in the American and Latin American markets were definitely being influenced by kpop in various elements (style, colors, video quality etc etc). Im here for the West being challenged. Im sure many Americans agree with me that there is an untouchable arrogance in this country (in general... and that includes our music market.... the west in general but since im American i see it more here). so im sooooo happy first of all that for once the West is shook and has a competitor. Although im not sure why ppl are suprised... maybe its bc i live in NYC but the talent in the arts of Korea has been evident since my childhood from morning glory, to various American animated shows being animated in Korea, to kdramas, fashion etc etc. My history teacher in college (a white middle aged man at the time and i started high school 15 years ago) repeatedly said (idk why loll) that korean fashion is ten years ahead. While kpop does not need american/western validation, some acknowledgement is still nice. Im hereeeee for this and i cannot wait to see what the future holds!

Jordan brought me here. I have to say that as a Korean man I am so proud of how hallyu has legitimately become a global phenomenon. It is no longer niche. This just shows the level of commitment and dedication Korean creatives have at perfecting their craft. Because no matter how much money, no matter how large the budget, if the talent can't perform, the content will still suck. This was a great video and a wonderful analysis of the video/audio feast that is K-POP.

Robin Thicke’s music video just hired Emily Rata and paid her enough to get her to take off her clothes, then 2 of them then proceeded to gyrate in front of the video camera, and the result is everyone around the world who is not a hermit+has internet access has at least watched the music video once.

I can think of three videos like this right off the top of my head! BTS "Heartbeat" (mv/ad for their game, but the quality is seriously on par with anything in the theaters) and Mamamoo's "Gleam" and "WooHoo"... especially that last one, I got to the end and was like 'oh hell that was a phone ad?!?'. In Gleam though, it's super weird... it's totally selling eyewear, but they somehow forgot to show the branding? LOL I don't know who dropped the ball on that one, but the video turned out awesome!

Also, for example, in the beginning bts did not have as much money to spend on music videos as they do today. However, the whole universe that they created around their videos, making you need to see those that are more than 5 years old to understand those of today is something that amazes me so much. Finding references from different videos or albums, having to watch the MV more than once. (And I also like to see how the budget was increasing, going from using staff cars and managers as actors, to the MVs that they can afford to have today. )

One of the reasons why I think Western MVs will take years to catch up. Although there are some incredibly talented performers, none are specifically trained to perform in various settings such as live stages, music video sets, variety shows, concerts, etc. Being a Kpop trainee (nevermind the actual idols) means you literally go through an Olympic-esque training before one can debut. The Western culture with its resistance to such methods ("robotic", "manufactured", etc.) and the core belief in the idea of a "lone genius" means Kpop may keep its hold on an unending stream of performers who can shine through even the most heavily produced music videos.
@AlexandraGates
@AlexandraGates 4 жыл бұрын
the head of bighit (the company that BTS and TXT are under) has discussed before how the myth that especially exists in the US around rockstars being organically talented from birth is almost always inaccurate. i think the tendency to dismiss kpop as manufactured (over western pop music) misunderstands how skill is typically a result of consistent, systematic practice and effort. although i guess there's something to be said for certain people having an 'it' factor, singing, dancing, and performing in general can be practiced at just like a baseball player practices hitting.
@theway6763
@theway6763 2 жыл бұрын
@@AlexandraGates yea I agree with that. No one is born a superstar. Sure they’re maybe born with innate talent but what will really get them to reach a big platform is for those talents to be strengthened up to a professional level. The greatest artists heavily practice their skill and have spent/spend years perfecting their craft to its fullest potential.

Love this video so much. Since getting into Kpop in 2016 I've noticed the significant quality gap between Korean MVs and western MVs. I've always thought that the western music industry would benefit from studying Kpop MVs. Nowdays if I look at a MV from a big western name I'm almost always disappointed by the quality, even if it's something most westerners would think looks amazing. Kpop has some of the most creative, intricate and captivating MV's ever made and sadly most of the world just can't compete. (At least for now)

Okay. K-Pop has tremendous production value that WAY exceeds Western countries, including the US. But there's a factor not being talked about : song ownership. No company would invest seemingly 10's of millions of dollars into something they simply do not own. No good business sense. Here in the US, record labels simply so not own the music outright, which causes hesitation to exceed pas a certain point. Again, not good business sense. Taking nothing away from K-Pop, but the record label probably owns everything, on top of the actual government being it's biggest investor, others in the global market would 't stand a chance. I agree with everything mentioned in the video, but when the deck is stacked in your favor, there's no other choice but to win. This is the template for the world, but most American artists would rather be successful on a smaller scale than to be worldwide and commit to a just having a job.

@up Up Thanks you for the insight. But mind you, no other government has ever done something like this. Not necessarily a bad thing. Infact, I look at this as a good thing. The Korean Government opening up all agencies to HELP make K-Pop become a global thing. They would still need help outside of their markets, such as the case with BTS. I don't agree with them kinda "selling out" by recording their latest song in English to gain a larger audience and break into the US market, but they played the game their own way. All that being said, if not for the Korean government, I don't think K-Pop would be the phenomenon we know it as today.

@up Up No problem for the reply. I'm not one to fear or hate monger on anyone. We all can learn from one another and grow together. I would never hate on anyone for any reason. I was just analyzing the K-Pop explosion from a purely business perspective for people to not blame their shortcomings on K-Pop when it comes to video production, the music or even the work ethic. Yes, K-Pop may have help, but it would not work if the music itself was garbage.

True, Kpop artist earn "very" little compared to western. Some companies take as much as 90% of the earnings.... And the "life span" of an artist in Kpop is limited. Groups usually disband/disappear after 7 years (or so), while in the west artists can look forward to 10-15-20 etc years of being in the spotlight. Kpop remains me of fast fashion = trends changing every few weeks (pretty much). Impressive for sure. Very profitable for the company owning the group /idol. But the idols/groups itself considering the amount of work and years they put in??? Questionable......

Korean names typically have three syllables. Surname: One syllable. First name: two syllables. If your pronunciation has four total syllables, you are most likely saying it wrong. Sadly "romanization," or the transcription of Hangul into English letters, often fails to work, as native English speakers will apply English pronunciation rules/phonetics, thus increasing the length of the vocalization, syllables and chances of error. Basically, reading English transcriptions of Korean names is a trap! For example, Jo Beomjin would be pronounced Jo Bee-omm-jin, but in reality it's Jo Bom Jin (the "eo" denotes HOW the O sounds). Thus ends this random foray into romanization. Loved the video by the way.

Wow, awesome video. Can't believe you mentioned the SM box! One pushback though. The amount of government assistance in the original Hallyu wave paled in comparison to the overall revenue of the Kpop companies. Plus, what's never covered is that the program actually ended several years ago. The explosive growth you see can really be credited to the individual artists, creative directors, choreographers, designers, etc.

and removal of censorship laws that prohibited non-korean language in artists', group names, and lyrics, censored overtly controversial issues, and that is when the real explosion of popularity occured, when you had self-criticism of government, society, and promotion of the individual.
@redacornagency
@redacornagency Жыл бұрын
@@murderofcrows2179 That's correct. Government used to step RIGHT IN to not only censor but ban artists they deemed not "good" for society. All of that is ancient news and despite the same shenanigans when it comes to general news & politics, the creative arts field is now mostly free of such censorship. That perhaps is multiple times more important in the growth of the spread of K-culture more than simple financial assistance.

The Korean government backing funding for art is an interesting twist when they compare the rates of import/exports. That’s was an interesting note
@murderofcrows2179
@murderofcrows2179 Жыл бұрын
This is often misunderstood. The government spends less than other major powers on cultural content promotion (See China's annual budget which is more than ten times south korea), and every country budgets promotions of cultural exports. South Korea invests in infrastructure, and support skills, and marketing, they do not engage in content creation, which governments are incapable of creating anything popular and cool. So kpop is not manufactured they are produced like any other pop content in the world. They just have an environment that permits efficient and world class quality standard. The actual production standards and directions are guided by creatives and their private agencies (often publicly traded corporations like the big three plus hybe). the idol culture developed by consumers of kpop also establish an expectation guideline of what types of cutlutal products are popular. It is market driven and also creative controlled, not government manufactured.

As the ridiculous amount of money spend in making the video, I don't have a doubt that the sound design enjoys huge budgets as well. The best part of all, is that even though they might seem impossible to match as they raise the bar so high, a good creative mind can certainly be up to par, as I believe that creativity can trump big big budgets.

Kpop succeeds by giving us the highest quality entertainment they can produce at their highest effort. I would much rather watch a polished product produced to show the best an artist is able to deliver in music, signing, dancing, fashion, concerts, album packages, performances, visuals and MV,s. I work hard for my money. I want to spend it on someone who worked hard to get my money . Now the US still has a few gems left but they are rare. I feel like too many US artists have gotten really lazy with their music from production, to performance to concerts to MV's everything seems like it was thrown together in some moms basement with a couple of friends who said it was good enough to film another boring music video with strippers , ( the current popular drug) money, cars at some party. The formula is old tired and boring. Nothing makes me wanna watch a video like that more then once. The concerts don't make me want to drop my money either. Seems like everyone is walking around on stage with an entourage, bottle of water, back up track and a white towel these days. Put your phones up! Give me a break....where is the performance anymore? The lack of effort for the bragging that some of these artists do is downright disrespectful to the consumer, their money and their time. Did they forget that we want to actually be entertained? It's why the American MV market is getting its teeth kicked in by a foreign music market right now. Rightfully so, you can't play amateur in a professional league. Lack of effort, the bare minimum financial investment, neglect to your fans and audience isn't sustainable in music anymore. I am so happy that people are finally done settling for crumbs. America had a legacy when it came to music that has fundamentally been lost in recent times. Kpop has set an impressive well earned bar. They also took what the west did well and multiplied it by a million. We know that American music used to be what other artists emulated. Why do you think that English language, hip hop fashion, American music production,bboy dancing is so prevalent in Kpop? Because the world is used to that sound and look by old American artists that paved the way when Americans dominated music on a global scale. Hopefully the American music industry can finally put in work like it used to and create quality content like it used to.

So true I got into k pop because of their crazy MV and catchy tunes and nice visuals but I have to say one of my favourite video is from GD who you . I find the simplicity endearing and it's also very engaging and intimate for the fans. My other favourite video is Cellophane by FKA twigs .

So, Korea splurges enough money on a music video that could be a full fledged indie film. Ok.

I am so happy that at least the listeners/consumers have the eyes to prefer the qualified MVs over the “uncreative stripping” ones. Because I felt always very awkward when I watched those kind of western ones, but there were so many, so I started seriously thinking DO PEOPLE REALLY LIKE THESE. It is not the case. Most of the people love qualified ones more.

YES! They all say it only just got popular and it s a trend that will die.....when kpop has been getting big for over 5 years now, they just arent up to date. If anything kpop will grow stronger not fade away.

You can see the influence in the dance performances of newer music videos, such as one from Sam Smith, who until then mainly had music performing and narrative shots in his MVs and why Lady Gaga's back again. I think some of the western artists who can still compete with their videos are Beyoncé, Ok Go and Billie Eilish, but that's because they already found their voice. I don't think in view numbers necessarily, but more generally in quality and how much more the MV adds to the music. A lot more attempts will look a bit clumsy, until those western artists have found their own voice.
