It never hurts to learn new languages even if only so that you can greet people, thank people, or use the same expressions when dining together....like ' thank you for the food.' You do not need to speak perfectly to increase the enjoyment of being together with others. If a mispronunciation or a misunderstanding makes everyone laugh, it brings you closer together.

Fun fact; Speaking with animation is actually a strategy used in teaching language. TPR, or Total Physical Response, or acting out and emphasizing words when you speak, helps to engage the right side of your brain and is necessary to learn languages. It also helps to communicate the meaning like charades.

I’ve experienced the terror of being thrown into intense customer service work in my second language which was, to be fair, a high level of competency for a non-native speaker but to the level of high school academic with no real world experience. A large part of the job was dealing with irate, complaining customers on the telephone, which was a living hell. People talk really fast and their regional accent kicks in to the max when angered. Of course, they are already pissed so it would be a challenge in your best language. I died of stress. I also did general reception and botched everyone’s name on the PA to the delight of customers and co-workers. Once, the botched name had an apparent sexual innuendo. Really needed the job or I would have run out in shame so many times. I did achieve near fluency but it took years of pain to get there.

DK & DK, these Idols are so brave diving into a language they don’t know, a language that is not tonal. Some of the problems with being understood comes from accent. You know what they say about US English & UK English: two countries divided by a common language. I only know English (unlike these clever young people) and I can often be misunderstood by Americans or Britons because of my New Zealand accent and New Zealand idioms. If you're more used to hearing English in different accents (like I think a lot of New Zealanders are) then it isn't that hard to understand the information the Idols are trying to get across. Listen to director / actor / (2021 Grammy winner :-D) for an illustration of a New Zealand accent and idiom.

I’m still so amazed by Ateez - all native Koreans, no one speaks fluent English, they all use their Korean names as stage names, yet they’re super popular in the U.S. However, I do think they’re a rare exception and agree with David - it’s incredibly helpful for groups to know English and have at least one or two native/fairly fluent speakers among them.

To this day I still feel uncomfortable ordering in English! Spanish is my 1st language. (I’ve been in the states over half my life) Even though Spanish and English are “somewhat similar” it felt strange to practice. I cannot begging to imagine how much harder it would be to learn English from any of the Eastern countries. Good job to all the Idols that are trying their best! Fighting!

The only way to learn a language is to use it, and that includes making mistakes. And when you make friends with someone that speaks that language you can ask them to correct you when you speak. No one should be made fun of for educating themselves and being open to other cultures than their own. And if you get your point across you've been successful

I can relate to the difficulties. My Japanese hubby struggled with English initially but l stood beside him and will only correct him quietly without embarassing anyone. It was tough because prior to coming to Malaysia he learned Malay for 3 months and could understand it a bit. Then he wanted to also learn English. So we have a dictionaries and of course action expression helps. Frustrating but funny most of the time.but it works. Aftet a few years he manages it well and now speaks 3 languages easily. Same goes when l am in Osaka l would have to depend on him translating. Luckily most of if his family members do speak and understand English except my mum-in law. I too have to learn Japanese and so far we managed somehow patiently.
