I think one of the reasons XG is based in SK is because of the heavy copyrights in the JPOP ( and it’s still the biggest market after the US market ; Japan loves their artists ), the mother of their company is one of the biggest companies in Japan A HOUSEHOLD and has strong I MEAN STRONG relationship with KPOP and was the reason why kpop promoted in Japan starting with BOA and now they have a subsidiary XGALX ( xg company ) to step out of the bubble of JPOP , that was their first bold move , and since their CEO , producer is Japanese/ Korean he wanted this Japanese group to be accepted by Koreans like how Japan loves kpop and that’s risky I applaud them for their bold move . And for XG music , I can say they are inspired by kpop (like how kpop was inspired by Jpop which is fine music is universal )but MUSICALLY NO , ABSOLUTELY NOT , everything they released so far has nothing to do with kpop ( except for tippy toes and mascara those songs where experimental to test the water and then they found their music direction and their color in shooting star and left right era ) that’s why kpopies exclude them when it comes to kpop conversations ,and since WOKE UP that song literally separated them from the kpop formula and they’re stepping out from that kpop umbrella My opinion abt them is that they are the CLOSEST GLOBAL GROUP we have in the music industry rn they are targeting different markets ; the Japanese/Chinese market rn even the way they are targeting audiences a lot of XG fans aren’t even fans of kpop and jpop in general + i think they’re going to target the US market since they’re going to start their US TOUR this week with their new mini album , y’all need to be ready cause XG is going to change the game fr fr

Rescene are one of my favourite groups right now (I bought both their albums to support them), but sadly groups with a cute concept are always less popular in the West. I think Badvillain have the potential to become big with the right marketing - but for Rescene the best we can do is spread the word

As a huge tbz stan (legit in the 0.75% of their top listeners) the way the west sleeps on tbz is kinda sad especially considering they legit have three english speakers in their group their phantasy EPs all had at least two or three really good b-sides and like always they're concepts are well-done but they can never quite break through despite being pretty big in korea (more precisely they apparently have a super solid fanbase in sokor and are generally well-known if their positions in monthly brand rep is anything to go by) hopefullyyy once they've settled into their new agency they'll pop up more for the members' sake bc they clearly want it and are willing to try to making it happen Anyways, some korean songs I've been listening to recently in no particular order: Cherry Blossom (by dept), Supersonic (by fromis), Bite back (as of now unreleased, by tbz), Sunflower (by RV), Lost by RM, Girls Never Die (triple s), Heaven (by Nayeon), How Sweet (NewJeans), HSKT (by Leehi and Wonstein), Lost in California (by Doyoung)

Rescene is amazing! I love them! And I'm so happy you got into "Abracadabra", it's one of my favorite songs of all time. "Fingertip" was kind of slept on in Korea and really deserves a second shot - Gfriend tried to expand their range and it was underappreciated.

Yeah people have been soooo dismissive of boygroups as a whole. People only know Stray Kids, Seventeen and NCT, I think. And maybe some of the new gen 5 boy groups, but that's about it. It's very sad, because there have been quite a lot of boy group bops this year!

Well I would give a list of what I’m listening too mostly right now but in the interest of saving everyone time I’ll just give my biggest recommendation which is Step Like We;Na the debut album from kpop girl group We;Na. I love We;Na I think that them as a group is something so not seen in kpop right now, they are like IU, Gfriend, Lovelyz, and early twice. Maybe a little bit if StayC and F(X) too, I would say SNSD before F(X) though. Very cute sound but there concept is really unique, the voices are unique, and the music is just so well done. Also I’ve hooked everyone I’ve showed We;Na too on to We;Na. It’s a 7 song and 2 instrumental album and the group is gearing up for there second full length album, please go give this a spin or two if your interested it’s absolutely 2nd and third Gen quirky kpop.

Abracadabra is such a banger!! Also I am so in love with the music video, because the rhythms of the dance and the song blend so perfectly to create an amazing performance. That cohesion of music and choreo is something I think is so special about kpop that is also so rarely perfected, but when it is, it's unstoppable.

not sure if you vibe with the more band side of kpop but MAN, iNSTEAD! by xdinary heroes altered my brain chemistry fr. perfectly captures that early 2000s emo/metal vibe and it suits them SO well. the music video is easily one of the coolest i've seen like. ever. and i REALLY wish they'd play it on a music show or something so i could hear more live performances of it. i NEED to figure out how to play the bassline so bad it's not even funny ALSO WORK MENTIONED!!! gotta make that money make purse has entered my brain as something i just say now and that's great. also can't forget "got a fur coat so i make it purr" like WHAT. that song is so delightfully silly i love it so much. jongho's flute playing clarinet notes, seonghwa's ostrich being filled with gasoline, the giant chickens, san channeling his inner orville peck in the dance break, yeosang lovingly stroking a Very Fake Looking chicken, mingi wonka, seonghwa coming out of the egg at the end (which might be a reference to the founding of the park clan????? and seonghwa's last name is park?). definitely one of my favorite music videos and songs by them for sure

From a dancing perspective, the choreography for Pretty U is one of the best in all Kpop. It's really hard to make clean choreo with large groups and Seventeen has no equal when it comes to that. It's giving GFriend times 100.

Fingertip is a song if you r new to kpop or if you relisten to it somewhere in the future, u will find it cool. But if u found at the same time it was released, u will be like me, mostly disappointed or stagnant. This was the song released after 3 major mega big hits that were Me Gusta Tu, Rough and Navillera, so the stakes were high. Meanwhile Gfriend at that time were literally standing neck to neck with Twice and Black Pink, they were bigger than Red Velvet at that time im not even joking. And when GF decided to change concept to girl crush a lot of expectations were set since Black Pink set the standards for girl crush concept so high. And the end result was Fingertips, a half-baked girl crush and cute concept, half Black Pink, half Twice, which probably the kpop world wasnt ready for. I honestly remember being so confused when it was released, not only was it not even close to the preceeding trio hits, but it also didnot sound like anything that would be greenlit for a mega group like Gfriend. And honestly, the song did still well on chart, peaking #2 on Circle Chart, but Source Music never, ever returned to that concept since then Nowadays, i found it much more listenable and enjoyable.

I can respect your choice not to, but as someone who also has very strong opinions about XG I would definitely like you to make a video about them. My opinions are mostly informed by me being a J-pop fan and where they sit between the intersection of that and K-pop, but as someone who seems incredibly informed with K-pop trends and fandom, and whose work I have so much admiration for, I think you could add a lot to the conversation.

The thing with Ice Cream’s brass part is that it’s not even a real trombone player. It sounds like a MIDI part, which is why I dislike this song, but I do like it otherwise. I initially had low expectations for Woke Up because k-pop rap tends to be kinda bad, but it blew my mind.

I kind of disagree with being a slave song, maybe you don't know much about them to understand many of the references they make, but they are simply talking about them and the reality that you need to sacrifice a lot to survive in a world ruled by money. Just cause is a parody and quirky song doesn't mean there isn't a critique on it. Plus Ateez as a group worked hard to get some of the privilege they have now and struggled a lot for it. The members know well that is not all glitter. I can understand many see as just telling people to work, but even in the mv and lyrics they make sure to show references to what I am saying. Not liking the song is totally fine I mean, taste is personal but Ateez has lore and they follow it with their mvs, so work is related to it too and for sure is not a pretty reference to capitalism on it.
