thinking in the context of this excellent analysis about the interpolation of "Lovefool" by the Cardigans in Off the Record's bridge, because it fits really neatly, too! Yujin sings the love me/love me lines from the chorus (and replaces fool me/fool me with leave me/leave me, which I'll come back to in a second), but Lovefool overall is a song about knowing that the singer's love interest has stopped loving her and not being able to do anything about it, but wanting to stay in the fake relationship anyways. I'm thinking about the first line of Lovefool -- "Dear I think we're facing a problem, you love me no longer," -- and your points about the collapse from the debut high. The song is about knowing the relationship is not what it used to be and knowing that it will eventually also need to die, but clinging onto what remains anyways. Not too dissimilar from old crab clinging to the stick that will kill it, even though no matter what happens, it will die. But Yujin singing "leave me, leave me" instead of "fool me, fool me" is like replacing this idea of wanting to stay in a loveless relationship with wanting to stay alone. Anyways, all to say, I think you're spot on with this analysis, and I love the added dimensions to what is maybe my favorite Kpop song of all time <3

As for the people who approach videos like this saying "it's not that deep" should keep in mind that art is as deep as you interpret it :> (also, i was wondering if you were going to say anything about apt by rose? I know I’m late but I’m a KATSEYE stan because I just accidentally found them one day so I didn’t know about the Dream Academy stuff until after getting into them. It is SO disgusting and cruel that they put a bunch of young women (and some LITERAL TEENAGERS) in such a psychologically damaging environment just for views. To single out *any* of these young ladies is misplaced blame because HYBE and Geffen being so money hungry and view hungry is what lead to this. It bothers me that these talented, intelligent, classy young women have been dragged through the mud. People are complex and every girl had a right to feel the way they felt on that show, they were under extreme pressure and misled and used every step of the way. Can we please just support them and allow them to have their peace after every single one of them worked so hard to be part of this group?

I don't think most people have an issue with a song that has a somehow vapid meaning. Fantastic Baby from BIGBANG has basically 0 meaning, and it's absolutely amazing. But compare the music, the MV, the styling and performances with modern YG. There is only so much one can say about being rich, hot and famous, and the songs start to blend together. If I'm supposed to enjoy this music, I need something else. Give me amazing production. Give me a unique and wacky concept. Give me unusual and fashion forward styling (XG, I'm looking at you). Give me something beyond catchiness. It feels like a lot of these modern concepts are so focused on being cool and nonchalant that they end up restrained and uninteresting.

I am into Kpop since 2014 and I became a fan of Twice after they changed their cute concept. I have never liked their early title tracks, especially TT, Likey, What is love. My fav song by them is Feel special and that's the song that turned my head to look what they will release next. Btw, I have never liked cute concepts to begin with so it is all personal preferences

Viviz and linguistics, my two favourite things 😍initially I did think they were saying "This love is mania," but the more I listen to Maniac (which is a LOT!) the more I just think the bad English works so much better than good English would. Like, this love isn't just mania, a transient state of being, it is Maniac, a noun, a person, a creature; the speaker doesn't just love a person that is a maniac, they love the love itself, and the love... is Maniac. Also maniac works fine as an adjective imo. And "I can't killin' it" is just iconic! The word "can't" works so well here because the speaker literallty cannot let go of the love, it's not a question of choice or desire but ability. "I can't kill it" doesn't work with the synatx of the song. So we get the glorious, the iconic, "I can't killin' it." I feel similarly about the song Square by Baek Yerin (another fave!) in that the dodgy English just elevates the hypontic feeling of the song, it's raw and barely comprehensible, like someone whispering sweet nothings into your ear at the end of a hard day, which is excatly the theme of the song. As someone who is obsessed with etymology and grammar, I also love hearing new and creative uses of Enlish that bend the language into new shapes- language is only a tool after all, and a phrase is only wrong until it isn't.

I listened to Off The Record for the first time in months and it made me really sad. There's just something in how the song's lyrics are about escaping at night and having fun, but knowing that feeling doesn't last makes you a bit sad. But you have to fight that feeling and live in the moment anyway.

It's the cocky concept that makes me unable to fully enjoy the the group, the girls are very talented and they do look like have a lot of fun on their projects, but this superiority and "better than everyone else" attitude they're pushing them to show 24/7 is not for me. Confidence and cockiness are different things

When watching the making of the mv for "off the record" leeseo said the director told them the apples represent love. The apples is like a subject for us to think outside the box, leeseo planting the seed could possibly mean that she wanted love so she grow one herself which might mean her dedication and hope for one's love. Within the end if the mv we were seen ive being happy with apples flying around like everywhere. From what I think the mv represents the dark times they went through for debut until the end they became famous making multiple apples (love, possible "fans") appear when in the start there was only a seed. (My explanation sucks 😢)

Twice may not go back to cute concept but they actually prove they can still similar things in Talk that Talk. TTT tbh is a cheerful songs if it wasnt for the sexy and mature outfit in the MV. Even Hare Hare can be considered "cute" Japanese release. But again, their outfit and overall MV is just not as colourful and bright as before.

@@TierraD2021 Thank you haha! I was going to ask why it’s spelled that way, but I decided to look it up myself; it’s a borrowed French word that was originally spelled in English as “key” but later changed to closer match the French spelling to make it distinguishable from the other word key - good to know now!

I was not expecting to like the Drip album this much but I did 😅 especially Really Like You and Billionaire. My only skip is Click Clack. The lyrics were the problem for me and it's not even because of the flexing, I enjoy songs like that, but it felt so lackluster and repetitive... Tbh I think I would have given it a pass if the song had been in Korean, if I had read the translation I would know what is was about, but at least I wouldn't remember every single lyric everytime I heard it 😭 Surprisingly, I even liked Wake Up In Tokyo because it feels like a mix between the fun/quirky side of kpop and YG's signature sound, so it was easier for me just to take it as a fun song (idk if that was their intention, but that's how I digest it 😅). Meanwhile, Click Clack was trying so hard to be serious about give them a boss girl image... And it didn't give me those results, it was so inauthentic, nothing that made me say "Yes, these lyrics about how rich and great they are are so babymonster"...

The Cats to IVE pipeline…
@fimbulvetr6129Күн бұрын
Off the Record is probably one of my favorite releases when it came to IVE. The individual stories converging through the apple’s influence is peak cinema imo. And it combines so perfectly with the scenes of them getting doused by the sprinklers. Anyone would be angry, or at the very least react negatively to getting sprayed by sprinklers, but they’re together just having a great time. No matter how much people rain on their parade (or turn on their sprinklers) they’re together living the same story, and that togetherness is their greatest strength.

spot-on analysis as always! i've loved the song since it first came out not only bc of the music, but also how the lyrics have always come across as feeling somewhat... sad. at face-value, the singer cheekily asks someone to spend the night with them and be intimate. but musically-especially with the interpolation of "memory" as you mentioned and what i'm sure is from the cardigans' "lovefool" (the "love me, love me" line sung by yujin)-hints at something deeper. they crave company; they DESIRE to be understood and cherished without judgment. and if you look at the cardigans' "lovefool", just like all the works you've mentioned in this video, its lyrics also revolves around loneliness and desperation. heck, even there's also a scene in the music video where the band's vocalist is on an island

@@vemarqui I don’t think I’ve ever seen the MV for Lovefool until now, but yeah it really does add a similar feeling of loneliness and isolation!!
