Why are the bipods deployed if on a tripod or elevated position?

Good question, I had the rifle sitting on the ground so was using them as kickstand, to shoot on the tripod and bag the way I was using the rifle didnt require folding them up so I left down in order to be able to place the rifle back on the ground easily. Make sense?
