Thank you. It is good to see the lava in context to its surroundings. In less than five minutes we get the whole picture. So many videos just show a close up of the lava and nothing else. More like this please. Much appreciated.

Wow, and the lava climbed over a mountain ridge, the bathtub fill up took a while, but the lava did it, thanks for sharing, be safe every one.

What amazes me is the sheer volume of Lava that is flowing from the cone on a regular basis... It's also that there is little smoke, compared to other volcanoes...

You have some beautiful footage of the braided lava streams here. It was also interesting to see what making a berm looks like... Kinda tough! It's big terrain, even for 'big' machines to tackle. Thanks.

odd looking lava isn't it??? It matches the surrounding mtn rocks!!!! Looks difficult to walk on. Wow.

Good luck, on holding back the force of nature! 😜 In the long run, their efforts may make the next eruption (years later) more devastating. All the best, stay safe! 😉

Every day or two it changes so much. Something new. That's what keeps it a tourist eruption.

I think they want to prevent the lava to flow to Grindavik, the next town. (This is a copy of my comment from my answer down below). It would be easier to divert the lava flow away from Grindavik there at the south end of Geldingadalir than anywhere down in the valley in the direction of Grindavik. It's not possible to hold lava back, to build a container to keep all the lava, that's just too much. But it's possible to divert the lava flow in one direction where it can flow down. It would flow through Natthagi valley over the road and into the sea, but not into Grindavik. That's at least the idea behind it that I see when I watch it. But the wall must be much higher, because the lava tends to go higher and higher. This outflow down to Natthagi valley is not enough to keep the lava level in Geldingadalir at the current height, it will sure rise higher... Is it even possible to build a wall high enough to keep the lava away from Grindavik, to divert the lava flow of the next few years through Natthagi over the road down to the sea and keep it away from Grindavik? Well, if it continues to flow for some years, it would reach Grindavik over the sea. It would just build up more and more land on the shore slowly but steadily... It's a matter of time. When the volcano stops in the next years, it would not reach Grindavik, but it would require high efforts to keep it away from Grindavik at least over the land. It would not be possible to keep it away from Grindavik when it grows slowly across the sea over to Grindavik... like an expanding river delta, that would eventually be so wide, that it would reach the neighbouring coastal town.

Channel the lava toward the sea. It may then form a domed lava tube that will superheat and expand the tube and excavate the lava in a subterranean lava tube. Note the huge lava tubes in Hawaii. Just Google it.

I don't understand why they're trying to build a wall at the end of Geldingadalur. There's already multiple other ways that the lava has taken to reach Nátthaga valley and this wall will merely reactivate those or fairly quickly overcome this wall.
@wheelie983 жыл бұрын
They don't want the lava to flow down into the adjacent valley to the west, which is an easier path to the road. They prefer that Natthagi Valley be filled up first, because they can build a cheaper berm there to protect the road.
@lemonrev3 жыл бұрын
@@wheelie98 If that is so i dont think they will win the battle They need to build a bridge where the current road is now and make a HUGE slant towards the water to keep the road intact, but i think they are right now, holding out, Containing the lava where its currently at, YEA righty o, We have seen what lava does to walls LOL.
@rwhirsch3 жыл бұрын
with all this earth moving equipment...can't they just plug up the crater and make the lava pop up somewhere else??
@lemonrev3 жыл бұрын
@@rwhirsch I believe there's another flow area they can redirect the flow of lava but they really need to cut or stop the flow into geldingadalur and let the lava build up and re grow around the rest of the lava and run off into the hills but i do not see this as a thing they are aiming for. so Keep watching what we can when we can..

Now that is a lava diversion that can actually work. Rather than trying to stop the flow, it is simply directed into another channel heading downhill.

And makes what difference? Each cubic yard flowing into Natthagi is a cubic yard flowing into Natthagi.

@@wheelie98 If we are diverting lava from Grindavik, that makes sense. But the farmhouse at the lower end of Natthagi is thus doomed. But I am inclined to believe that this Hraun Monster will go where he wants to go.

The previous walls were also an attempt to divert the lava. By blocking southern path it was supposed to flow north but the flow was too strong.
