I can't believe more than 300 people dislike this. Are they anti-weapon or something dumb like that? Or maybe they just have no joy and were never taught the glory of martial arts and hunting by their father. Pity. These are the BEST videos I've seen on DIY bow making, and I plan to make some of these with my sons, and purchase your tillering and real strings and accessories. Thank you, and a BIG thumbs up from me.

No I think they are more anti. Background noise. That obnoxious so called music. I've been building bows for over twelve years. I'm always interested in Seeing what other people do. But couldn't stand the noise. Part of Archery is stealth And Being aware of your surrounding me. If that's the kind of noise you need To hunt or Concentrate on your surroundings, I feel for you.

I like your no nosense approach to this subject. its not hard just takes patience to do it well, arrow and spear making is in a lot of ways more difficult. Ive been making bows since 73 my first bow was a black palm bow, I had a great mentor, an employee of my dad, a real sepic warrior. In 79 I learned how to make bamboo japanese bows from my sensei. My first employer, a greek guy taught me turkish skills. Archery has linked me to great people all accross the world , all my life. Ive always built heavy bows 60# + Ive probably made 30 bows since 73, I make them, use them, hunt with them, the last bow I made, and still have is a mongolian style horn bow at 80# I'm old now and enjoying my PSE compound, but I still shoot my horn bow for exercise keep up the great YTs I hope you in spire the next gen. of bowyers I have also developed skills with the sling, boomerang, and woomera. you should play with these, fun times

@Magna Carta welllll... I realised that the wood I bought was softwood (rookie mistake) but I shaped and tillered it anyway for the practise. I went back and got some American oak and sapelee mahogany and started again with the oak. I've almost got it tillered but I need to weave another string at about 64" to get the full brace height. Tell you what though, I'm having so much fun with it!! Hope you're keeping well mate👊🏽👊🏽 from Wakefield.

@Marcus 1 I've got a couple of ideas for the next project. I've managed to get my hands on a decent bit of mahogany so I might have to take a look at bending with steam. @Marcus 1 holy 💩 that sounds like one hell of a time consumer. But I totally get that it's going to be something like a work of art once it's finished!! The Oak one I finished is about 66" and it's a good size. But I wouldn't mind dropping it down to about 63/64". I definitely need to do a full measure up when I finish work tomorrow, then start planning out the shape. The sapelee is super strong so I might be able to get away with making it a smaller profile all round and keep the strength 🤞🏽

Good Build and Video... Only recommendation I'd make: When Cutting/Filing your Knocks in... Cut/File/Sand in One Direction, From Back to Belly. Especially with Backed Bows. Lift your Saw/File in the Return Stroke... You'll have less chance of Lifting a Splinter or Backing material. On a side note: You should look into Kangaroo Rawhide for Backing material. It's Heavenly!

Bravo! this is a great companion to your previous video for a long bow build from a board. I have attempted a couple of bows and have had issues with proper tillering on both. These additional tips on tillering will be most helpful. for the next try. It occurred to me that when you cut in the arrow rest, if you drilled a hole at the inside corner of the the rest it would accurately locate it and you would have a nicely rounded inside corner on the rest. Thanks again for your "user friendly" videos. They invite folks like me to begin building and have fun doing it.

Dude that's a great idea and no one ever showed how you get the arrow rest measurements! That really helps.. only thing is after you put the rawhide on you didn't continue to explain the measurements and it was fast forward ⏩ . It shows you barking out and measuring sections on the raw hide and then cutting it but I don't know what those measurements are

I have other bows, even expensive ones, but I still love taking my old one I made out for a shoot. I ended up getting some properly aged red oak staves and made 2 custom bows for me and another friend. I backed them with some elk rawhide and added some custom accents to each bow. It’s only about 52 inches long so the draw isn’t too long but the process it took me to make both bows, will stick with me forever. Your videos are definitely fanning the flame. After 15 years and several major surgeries including a T-4 spinal operation, I decided to get back into archery. I had been using an off brand 70lb compound I bought in 1995, that I couldn’t pull more than 20”. To see what weight would be suitable, I guessed about 40 lbs., I bought a recurve kit off Amazon for $75, that came with 9 aluminum arrows, target, and glove. All the arrows were true, the assembly was a snap, and it shot surprisingly well at 15-20 yards. It’s given me time to reacquire my skills and strength, and opportunity to spend time reviewing what I want to buy in the future.

I know the purpose of this was to encourage me to make my own bow but all it did was convince me that it's worth it to pay somebody else several hundred bucks for one.

I see so many of these 'creative' type channels where self professed experts show you how to do things, then they go and do something that destroys your faith in them entirely. I will never understand people who cut wood that way, or break any of the grain, or rip their cuts. It drives me nuts.

I just started a red oak bow after ordering the book from Clay Hayes. I learned 10 times as much from your video as I got from his book. I am just at the tillering point so I hope to end up with a good bow. Will be following you closely and will be looking for your tillering tool. Thanks for taking the time to record the long and tedious process of building a bow.

Between your videos and Clay Hayes I made a pretty good functioning red oak board bow on my first attempt. 63.5 inches 37lb at 28 inches. As a beginner I only wanted a light weight bow but could have had a nice 45lb bow it was a shame to have to take the poundage down. So I am very grateful to you for the knowledge and rapped that my beautiful creation works !! Ps I’m new to archery this is my in .... joining an archery club soon. Sooo much to learn.

Hey man, great work here. Your explanation of different ways to calibrate the bow by removing material was really detailed and interesting. There is a ton of garbage on youtube but its great hobbyist content like this which makes youtube so great. You are saving important knowledge for use by future generations. Content like this will be a time capsule for eternity.

Good video. I've made 20 bows (30-65lb), broke my first 4 allempts about.20yrs ago. Too bad I didn't see this back then.i encourage young guys to make& use them. Most of my relatives have one of mine to shoot targets, carp, deer, pumpkins, etc. it's a good feeling to successfully make your own.

I have been making bows for years. I don’t use Any power tools all by hand. I started on bow boards and honestly. ...,..I have built some board bows that out perform big fancy staves all day. The bow I mainly use is a red oak board bow I backed in sinew. It’s 7 years old and dropping turkeys still.

Excellent post. Your video with the poplar board bow got me started. I've since shaterred the poplar bow and a hickory bow. But I built a VERY light hickory board flat pyramid bow and I am now building a veneer birch backed oak board flatbow. Next thing I want to try is this oak board bow!!!! I have a couple of pieces of deer rawhide from the first deer I ever arrowes MANY moons ago... but they may be too short, like 27 inches each (?), so I may go with the chewtoy replacement until next deer season in which I will try to harvest a deer and make more rawhide. One question I have for you are rough dimensions of the belly taper. I could not get it right with other projects and went to a flat pyramid bow which were easier to tiller, but I want to try one of these straight limb, end tapered bows.

Just made a white oak selfbow that combines very wide flatbow limbs tapering to reinforced, pyramid-shaped nocks. It took many day to tiller correctly and my apartment looked like a sawmill but now it shoots like a dream and it is only 132 centimeters unstrung.
