When We were young - its been a while - my grandfather got us to go out to the local arenas and pick up old hockey sticks. He taught us how to add a handle and laminate cow hide on the bows, make strings and arrows, how to tiller these bows and seal them up. They were a great little bow. I think the bows were made out of Hickory. We had a 3d coarse even before they were popular. Harvested grouse , rabbits and did some bow fishing with these. Mine didnt break and I still have it to this day. Thanks grandpa for introducing me to archery! Sixty years later and and I am still shooting!

I'd be fascinated to see your take on PVC bows! Do you have a recurve in the works?
@freesk84 жыл бұрын
I really want to see a comparision of your bows vs PVC bows. What if yours are only 10% better, but the PVC bows take 1/10 the time to make?
@bryandavid1924 жыл бұрын
Depends on how you're making the pvc bow what your top end performance will be, but I can see that pvc can be good for training draw strength. Quick to make a high poundage bow with thick pipe. Problem is weight to performance ratio and uv degradation
@theguywitheyebrows Жыл бұрын
@@bryandavid192 i speak from 20+ years experience with pvc as a sprinkler system design and installer, i can say it retains flexibility and durability through over a week of high uv days in the SE NM desert where the sun melts paint off cars. i have a 45# pvc recurve, flings cane arrows with great force and carbon ones with great speed; paint helps with uv degradation but also if ya just don't let it sit in the sun for weeks it will be fine. also its lighter than my green fiberglass bear 'archery' youth bow, and far less handshock. they're a great option for a budget bow because of the resistance to literally everything else, they buckle before they break (never broke one myself), decently high powered longbows can be made with low cost equipment (pallet wood&screws works for forms) and be ready to shoot in minutes. hard to beat pvc for effectively arming large groups of archers. that being said, im dyin to find a feather glass hockey stick to follow along with kramer here, that bow is soo cool!! maybe not cooler than my recurve but id definitely make one if a stick showed up in my world.
@thefeatheredfrontiersman81354 жыл бұрын
And Kramer, one more thing. I have finished my bow for the season! It's a rawhide/ prairie rattler backed juniper. It's pulling about 63lbs at 28in. It has a greenwing teal silencer on the rest and a buckskin grip! Can't hear its shot! If you are on FB or a community id love to show you! Think about starting a FB group how cool would that be?

I played hockey growing up. Sticks can crack internally in the shaft. Mostly they will crack at the heal, ( where the blade meets the shaft). Just a tip, once you cut off the blade, hold the stick in your hand like shooting a bow about 8 - 12 inches from the ground. Let it fall to the ground and listen for a thud or a “ring”. If you hear a thud sound the stick is solid if you hear a ringing sound then the stick is cracked. Cracks most likely will be on the side of the stick where the concave side of the blade as this is where most of the stress is when making a shot. You can also test the stick before cutting off the blade. I would say that chunk came out from the blade end of the stick This could be why that big chunk came out. If you ever make another hockey stick bow with a used stick keep that in mind. Not all used sticks will have cracks in them. Now I want to make one out of my old hockey stick.

Once hockey stick manufacturers started using fibreglass for reinforcement there was no going back, though there may still be some solid wood sticks out in the world. Sherwoods like that used aspen cores, older solid sticks were normally maple. Using a Sherwood model like that is a good heritage move, the PMP 5030 model is still for sale today - just imagine, there was a time when that stick - inexpensive as it is, was the stick the pros were playing with. If I were to make it a generational thing I would make a bow out of a Jofa Titan.

I'd suggest trying a different wood. Maple, oak, walnut, and locust boards should be available. I'll tell you 2 secrets! If it's a broad leaf it's most likely a hardwood, if it's an evergreen most likely soft. Hard or soft has no reflection of bow performance. Pacific yew and Rocky mountain juniper can be scratched with a thumbnail. But I assure you those are some of the best. I'd try as many different as you can get your hands on. Let me know how that poplar works.
