Thank you for your bow reviews including the Black Hunter 'longbow' version. I own 4 of these bows and enjoy them very much for their smoothness, accuracy, quietness, and pleasure in simply shooting 'Trad' archery. I am 74 years old shortly and have owned many, many, traditional bows including Bear, Herters, expensive hand-crafted bows. I liked each of them for what they were and enjoyed a Stotler handcrafted bow ($700+) the most. However, my second choice for pleasure is the inexpensive Black Hunter long-bow (Twig Archery) as unbelievable as it may sound. Archery is a great hobby and in many ways a health builder i.e. physical strength, hand-eye coordination, mental relaxation and clarity, and simply just 'Fun'. bill bartholomew, Pennsylvania

I bought the 50# variant of this bow last year to use for the upcoming deer season. I saw this review and several others that gave almost nothing short of high praise so I felt confident jumping on one when I found it on sale at like $78. I had very little archery experience prior to this purchase aside from making a few PVC bows nearly a decade ago so I wasn't sure if I'd be ready to take it out hunting when deer season approached. I watched what must have been hundreds of videos trying to figure out how to tune arrows to the bow that were suitable for hunting, how to aim the bow consistently, etc. I settled on string walking, in about a 4 week period I went from losing arrows every day to getting 6 inside of 5-6" at 20-25 yards consistently using the exact setup I planned to hunt with. I took 4 deer in the first week out, all at about 20 yards and it really solidified in my mind what an excellent purchase I had made. I'm coming up on a solid year since my purchase now and not long after deer season ended I got another for my wife, a 35# recurve and I constantly recommend this bow to everyone every chance I get. My only regret is that I didn't get one sooner seeing as I'd been eyeing one since I saw the NuSensei review like 7 years ago lol.

@OnHollidayАй бұрын
@montv291 you can't go wrong with some Gold Tip Warriors or some Dark Timbers from Big Jim's bow company. Both very affordable and very good arrows. The draw weight of the bow and your draw length will determine the spine you need though.

@OnHolliday thanks! I plan to go for 40# and just based on some quick googling, I think I will be 28 inches. Maybe just a tad over.
@OnHollidayАй бұрын
@montv291 I'd think that you would be set with a 500 with some good point weight, with a 600 I suspect you'd have to either go light up front or cut it down a fair bit. Depends on what you want really but a 500 with about 250gr up front would be a great hunting weight arrow. Figure out what weight you want up front and if it's weak you just cut 1/4" off the shaft at a time until flight comes true or change point weight if you don't want to have to cut the shafts.

Gotta love a guy that shows no prejudice when he reviews an item. So many of the higher profile YT archery guys show contempt for the Chinese bows , whinging about the smallest thing and only review them as the budget bows are so popular and they get a lot of views. Kramer, the bomb!
@UTxTheArchangel3 жыл бұрын
I think one of many reasons those reviewers do it is because some of them might have connections to local archery shops or even 3Rivers or Lancaster. If they don't have a negative mindset towards forgien bow suppliers, then those suppliers would be legitimate competition for say 3Rivers, whom doesn't want competition, bc competition would mean they would have to lower their prices. 3Rivers wants us to view the Black Hunter as a cheap budget bow so we can spend 300$ on their Old Mesa instead. 200$ more makes some ppl feel like that means its better....has to be. All of my bows with the exception of 2(Korean supplier and Ukrainian supplier) are from China. Specifically one of the most respected suppliers in the Horsebow market. Zero complaints about them and their bows.

Thanks for taking the time to do these reviews. I'm looking for a bow for my son for Christmas. We have always hunted deer with crossbows but two years ago I purchased a samick sage ( which I love) and took a deer with it this year. No sights, no plunger, just some vibration dampeners and shooting off the shelf. Although, I'm very comfortable with it, I have nothing to compare it to. My son and I have agreed on getting him a different recurve just for the possible differences. We are leaning towards the mandarin duck series...this video helps.

Walking and shooting the park is a really nice social and outdoorsy (but not too physically challenging) thing that can still be done in Covid times. Think golf with arrows. People are really starting to crave these occasions now. In early October I had to persuade people to come along. Now there are so many requests that I nearly can't handle them anymore. 16:33 The back of the riser that holds the top limb has a hump down the middle. The mound of that hump has two well defined "vertical" ridge lines. The left vertical line is center to the shelf. I place a "horizontal" piece of masking tape about halfway from the top of the back of the riser and the bottom of that cut away on the back of the riser. Now, at 20 yards to my 48"x48" target that masking tape and left vertical ridge line form a "crosshair" that makes a type of ghost sight due to how our eyes work. It's like an overlay you can see the target through.

I have the recurve-version. After 20 shot the top limb delaminated. I got a replacement (5 weeks) and after another 200 shots the bottom limb broke through the hardwood core. I got half of the price as a cashback, repaired the limbs carefull with epoxy and shooting the bow without any problems afterwards. Maybe I had just bad luck. The batch seemed to have had problems with the glue (maybe wrong temperature during drying or whatever). But i would still recommend to buy the bow at a company with a little bit of a higher quality control (Drake, Mandarin Duck or something like this) just to avoid such problems. Apart from that: A very smooth and good bow. Keep up your great work and all the best from Germany.

Just got the Mandarin Duck TD longbow, arrived in 7 days from china to the east coast USA, that alone is amazing as I'm still awaiting a vendor package from Florida that shipped out 2-1/2 weeks ago, Grrr. I've been heavy into archery since a kid in 1953, all flavors but particularly traditional archery and mostly Hill-style longbows. Needing a backup TD longbow for an upcoming flyaway hog bowhunt I took a chance on the Black Hunter offering and so far I've not be disappointed. I ordered the last 45@28 in stock and that's what arrived, as my Easton digital draw weight scale registers a consistent 45.3lbs holding weight at exactly 28" of draw length (to the front of the bow shelf). I was specifically intrigued with this bow due to the bamboo limbs as that's what I prefer on all longbows. Bottom line, very pleased. Super smooooooth draw to past 28" (thanx to bamboo), good speed with 10 to 12 gpp woodies and carbons alike. There is some boinging noise happening on release as the R/D limbs and tips do their wiggles, this is normal, but that was easily tamed with a pair of wool silencers inserted into the string ... speaking of which, the supplied string was a tad too short at 56-1/2", so I spun up a new B55 14 strand endless string at 57-1/2", which is a teeny bit long as I expected and that allowed putting in some good twists to nicely round it off. This yields a brace height of 8" to the depth of the grip. The supplied swatch of sticky backed hair hide would make a good shelf rest (there should have been instructions to let newbies know to make sure the hair points forward when making a hair rest), but I prefer Velcro sticky back loop instead. All in all, for the low price point, overall good build and materials, and good performance (stable on the release and fast arrow speed), I'll give this bow 9 out of 10 stars .... if it lasts without issues for a year's worth of shooting I'll up that rating to 10 stars. Cheers! :)

I’ve had this same bow for about 2 weeks (40lb) and have shot about 200 arrows through it. I shot traditional decades ago and this bow has rekindled my interest in archery. I would echo your remarks on how smooth it shoots and how low the hand shock is. I draw 31.5 so I reduced the brace height to 5 inches which is less than the recommended height but it still shoots fine. So far 110% happy with the purchase. Nice review

I just ordered the mk ii version of the black hunter recurve. From what I've been told when speaking to Mandarin Duck the mk ii differs from the mk i in that it now shares the same limbs for both left and right hand bows. They also say that the limbs shape has been improved for better performance and that: "The max draw length is 31 inch. The 28 inch length is used to measure the draw weight. When we switched to the new version, we corrected the specs documents as well." So far I have not seen any comparison between the two versions.
@ArcheryParkNZ3 жыл бұрын
MKI used a maple core limb. MKII is a bamboo core and the bolts are bigger as there were issues with their durability. The same limb type has only been recently introduced and both versions exist in parallel. Mandarin Duck is a distributor and buy from a Chinese Manufacturer (that is not Junxing) and get it branded for them. We know this as we had an agent visiting the manufacturer for us and got proof that they make Mandarin Duck bows there also.
@Thestripper13 жыл бұрын
@@ArcheryParkNZ Thanks that's good info. As with many items from China it seams that a design can have many different producers. After speaking with Junxing I think that they also manufacture their version of the black hunter. I bought mine (mmkII) from Mandarin Duck. It's decent but the libs fit to the riser isn't stellar. Had to round of some corners. No big deal. My 30lb bow measures 38lb on my 31.5" DL.
@ArcheryParkNZ3 жыл бұрын
@@Thestripper1 In the end it is a cheap, mass produced bow. So it won't have the same fit as a much more expensive bow. Yes, Junxing make a bow that is 99% the same, with some minor differences - but that's not the one Mandarin Duck sells.

@@ArcheryParkNZ I have a feel that the Junxing's version is the better one.
@ArcheryParkNZ3 жыл бұрын
@@Thestripper1 I would have rated them the same up to ca. 1 year ago. That was when Junxings paintjob on the limbs became really, really poor with bubbles, paint missing, finger prints that couldn't be removed and lots of scratches. We had that problem on about 20% of their bows, so we swapped away from them completely. Up to that point we sold both manufacturers in order not to rely on just one. But I am glad to hear that you're happy with your bow - and that's what counts in the end! Shooting and having fun with it!

First I bought the longbow, but the limbs were mismarked at 40# @ 28" but it was actually 46.5# @28" and they sent me 40# limbs for free... But they were recurve limbs. I find the longbow to be easier to shoot and more forgiving and it shoots faster, definitely better if you're stringwalking. The recurve is a bit shorter and it's definitely quieter.

I purchased a black hunter from Mandarin duck about a month back. The first bow I received had the string snapping problem. I received a new set of limbs and a new string after a week of e-mailing them about this problem. Comparing the old set of limbs and the new ones I received that worked, there is a huge visual difference in the string grooves and the tips of the limbs. So there is still a risk of receiving the bad limbs but they can be fixed by carefully sanding the string groove a little bit.

Because of the pandemic and the shutdown of supply chains I have not been able to get a replacement set of limbs. I almost just bought a whole new one but ended up getting a 62" single-piece longbow. Figured as a new archer I might as well see what else was out there. Some day if the limbs become available I will replace them and shoot it again. Until then, at least it breaks down for easy storage.

Love your videos man, thank you and keep it up. I have been shooting for a long time and still learn new things from you to improve my archery. These reviews are so helpful and so good.

Touching on the black hunter recurve. I bought the 35 and 45 lbs. huge difference in smoothness!!! The 35lbs is noisy and not so smooth. 45lbs bow is just freaking amazing and silent even before pitting beaver pelt.

Hey Kramer I just bought the Black Hunter longbow in 45lbs and I think it is great for the price. I let some friends try and they were very impressed with it. They will be looking to buy it themselves.

Very nice review. I just bought one of these bows. Do you have an Arrow and string specification to recommend for it? This is my first bow.

These are my questions too. I guess I'm buying a B-55 blemish twist, and no idea what arrows, even after hours of research. Getting old already

I got a 40 lb Black Hunter recurve for Christmas and I absolutely love it. I have not shot a bow for about 20 yrs and this bow gave me so much confidence. My form and grouping have gotten very consistent and tight. Already thinking of a new bow. Any recommendation? Great vid btw.👍🏾🏹🎯

Great reviews, Kudos! My question is are the tips reinforced? Can it handle D97 or fast flight strings? Recommendations? Hunting, field archery competition, coming back to the sport... thanks in advance. Can you review the blackhunter "Elite", and the "BH Stealth", next ?? Thanks.

Yeah everyone is different. Personally I prefer primitive high poundage self bows or composite horn bows,and English longbows. All preferably 65lbs and up

Why? 35# is all I need to hit anything. Although I shoot a 50# compound too.

Found a Black Hunter longbow for sixty dollars... that shocked me today... the price... cheap... but an excellent bow... the longbows can be found online really cheap at the moment... the older versions... same price I bought a custom string for a Mongolian bow from you guys today plus two sets of beaver silencers... unreal how cheap they make the Black Hunter bows for lately... when it runs out wonder if the bizarre bow prices will ever happen again for such a nice bow...? Amazing price for what is in the package if you get what you order of course... some do not...

Hi @kramer, I bought this bow in Feb 2020 and love it. I then bought horse bow (Mongolia!, Turkish and Korean). Have you tried these "horse bows" , would you be interested to review these type of bows? I'd bet you could build one of these and I would be eager to watch you build these type of bows also. Thanks for your time and enthusiasm. You are the best and most exciting laminated bow builders I have ever watched on KZbin. Stay safe and God bless you.

I bought one three or four years back #45. Put a Flemish twist string, leather grip pad. Love it! Poor man's Acadian Woods Tree Stick. Also bought the #40 limbs for off season.

I bought this bow a few months ago . 60 pound draw weight at 28 inches , it is by far my most accurate and dependable bow that I own. I would have no problem paying a few hundred dollars more to get this version at 80 pounds draw if it were possible .

I have the recurve version of this by Junxing #30 and absolutely love it. Bought it second hand for $100 Australian . Started shootings with some cheap ish eBay carbon arrows and after I bought the black eagle vintage 500 spine. There was no setup or tuning necessary, the combination works like a charm.

I have the #50 and it was $140aud new, with 12 carbon arrows. Recurve version though, loving it so far. Ordered it and it was at my house the next day

Made the purchase 3 weeks ago. Got a left hand version, but shoot ambidextrous so I'll get a balanced muscle workout... Since I've never owned a bow and haven't shot one in... 60 years, I have nothing to compare it to. So far I like it a lot and now shoot up to 72 arrows off each arm (nearly) daily and can feel a dramatic strength difference in just 14 days! THANK YOU for this accurate review!!! PS. Purchased your bow stringer & have an eye on some other stuff. So glad you have an Amazon link, too.

I just got my "longbow" today thanks a lot to this video. Funnily enough however, the base of the limbs look like the longbow limbs, but they're very much the recurve ones. Not the worst thing because on Amazon the recurves are still more expensive & when I do buy some longbow limbs for this they'll fit perfectly. Just odd the way a lot of these bows are handled by the different companies

I've come back to your video like 15 times it's so easy to follow! Question please? 4:53 You put the beveled limbs on the rectangle riser and said it worked fine. Could you do vice versa i.e. put the rectangle limbs on the beveled riser, or would this be unsafe?
@greenhoodedvigilante4584 жыл бұрын
Do you measure the 28" length from the throat of the grip anchor for draw weight? I thought it is from front of the riser. Because the limbs are attached on front of the riser, not back. As far as I heard, it's because draw weight is related to the limbs, not riser. It's how much the limbs are bending.

Started off recurve, moved to compound once I started hunting. Looking to get back into the more traditional styles. I have to admit that choosing between the longbow and the nearly identical recurve is driving me nuts!

Kramer, I purchased one new from ebay and had the issue with the tip coming off. The glue that let go, but I was able to get it back and glue it back on myself. So far so good, but I did have to make a new string as the one on the bow at the time got destroyed when the tip let go.

Great longbow. My bottom tip overlay fell off after about over 1000 arrows. Glued up another, reshaped and its back up and running like a champ. It was my fault for being rough with the limb while stringing using the step through method. Use a stringer and they should stay on a lot longer. Riser is cut a bit past center so it’s very easy to tune arrows to achieve good arrow flight. You can’t beat this bow for 100$

I bought mine on ebay direct from China over 2 years ago (also 40lb) and love it! It is all the great things you have said. But my longbow limbs are shaped at the riser end to match the riser, not squared off.

So I just received my Black Hunter Longbow 40#. Is there anyone that could recommend what arrows to use for a beginner? I've been looking at some of the custom made Port Orford Cedar arrows. Although want to start off with something a bit more affordable until I get better at this.

Im using cheap YLS turkey feather carbon arrows off amazon for mine. I got 340 spine which is pretty dang stiff for a #40 lol. i would suggest 450 to 500 spine. They are not the best arrow but you definitely wont be upset if you lose or break one lol. They were about 45 after shipping for 12 feild tiped arrows. Good luck!

The 40lb Black Hunter takedown I got for $110. The riser is lightweight, looks and feels nice. The limbs were fine too. Had no problem with the string, adjusted the brace height to 7.5" and it did well. Maybe that guy in the ratings didn't set it up right or maybe he didn't wax the string. I waxed mine. Have no complaints.
