I don't understand why Kramnik didn't play e4, that was an opportunity to weaken Black's e6 pawn and to fix his own pawn structure. But he kept his handicap of doubled e pawns and finally lost his pawn on e3. At 6:22 for example if White plays e4 I think that Black is seriously in trouble. If Black take the pawn then Nxe4 followed by Ng5 (potentially with check) and the e6 pawn is attacked three times and g and h pawns can quietly move forward, and if Black refuses to take after exd5 exd5 Kramnik can launch a devastating pawnstorm against Black's kingside and I don't think that Black can survive this even with one more piece.
