I was there too earlier first light at 6 am - 9 am. Landed decent ones. I landed around 6 and dropped 2. The biggest one I've caught there was 2 months ago. About 27 inches. Personal best peacock!

Hi BCSG. I see that you're using the Abu Hornet Stinger Plus BF rod. Am thinking of ordering online. What's your opinion on the rod? Is it tip heavy?

Hi there, nice fishes you've got! Just wondering if those fishes are spawning / pre-spawning peacock basses (given the hump on the male one). From my experience, I notice that these spawning / pre-spawning bass tend to be nearer to the shoreline and are less cautious in attacking lures/flies that go near them. Hence, spots that are otherwise non-productive tend to be suddenly much more productive (this a phenomenon encountered through LPR/BR/LSR before during a particular time of the year). As much as I love catching them (and usually they are of larger size), lately I have been wondering whether catching such spawning/pre-spawning bass may affect their spawning due to the stress and handling of getting caught, in turn affecting their spawning and ability to care for the offspring. Hence, while providing delight during a fishing trip, I am not sure if this will have an adverse effect in the long run, especially with the fishing pressure and dwindling population of PBs at the legal areas. Just a thought that I have had lately and wondering whether us as sport anglers should pay more attention to such implication of our acts that go beyond CnR. Cheers and tight lines.

+iosephos89 good question, yes spawning fish tend to be closer to the shoreline because they need to find suitable nesting sites. However, they hit lures more often not because they are less careful but because they are more aggressive during spawning, they will hit anything that comes near to protect their fry or eggs. This is a complicated question to answer because it is steering dangerously close to the zone of fishing ethics and as with most ethics questions, opinions differ drastically from person to person. I'll tell you what I think but I will be very clear that it is just my opinion and I am not suggesting that it is the right way. This is not something that I have the expertise to make a qualified statement on. I think that fishing for spawning fish does not affect the overall productivity of the species as long as a few rules are followed. 1) Try to avoid targeting both parents at the same time if there is more than 1 angler. The danger to the eggs or fry comes when both parents are removed from the area at the same time. 2) Release the parents exactly where or as close as possible to where you caught them from. My personal experience targeting spawning fish and the experiences of those I fish with all suggest that if proper care is taken when targetting spawning fish the parents almost always return to the fry/nest after releasing them and life goes on. 3) Catching and keeping in large quantities or netting which are both usually done by foreign workers, is what I feel is the primary cause of the population decline.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to respond. I agree with you that the fishes tend to be more aggressive as well; I have previously phrased it as them being less cautions because I have noted that they tend to be spooked less easily. E.g. when I have failed to connect the take to a positive hookset, I still can cast the lure/fly back to the spot and they will attack it again almost instantly. This is less likely to happen for non spawning PB - my experience is that a failed hookset will guarantee a spooked fish. Glad to hear from your experience that the catching of the pre-spawning/spawning fish do not affect their ability to spawn or parent their fries. Two reasons why I had asked the question: I noticed from social media concerning overseas fishing regulation that there are some restrictions on catching spawning fishes - hence there must be underlying purposes for the same; I had also caught the same PBs from the same spot on different occasions during a particular season, hence raising the concern on their susceptibility to be targeted (especially if they are not released). It is sad to witness the consistent destruction of fishing spots over a decade. Whereas the opening of legal areas do offer greater options to anglers, it also appear to guarantee the wiping out of the population of fishes in that area. My sense is that the current policies (or lack of) concerning fishing in public reservoir are extremely knee-jerked, lacking research and proper regulation, and almost non-existent enforcement in legal fishing area. It is a shame that the presence of peacock bass (especially the temensis species) and the potential of turning Singapore to a lucrative sports-fishing tourism destination has not been appreciated, and will not be appreciated unless it becomes translated into monetary utility for the authorities. Meanwhile, anglers can only lament on the state or take on the risk of fishing in non-legal areas.
