it shows just how inventive the cartoons were back then far more likable than they are now

Hey this is awesome. There doesn't seem to be much info about this online, but it must be one of the very first sound cartoons. It was released some months before the Jazz Singer, which is generally cited as the first sound feature. It might have been made with sound on disc, rather than sound on film. Thanks so much for posting this rare gem! The quality is fantastic, all things considered. Edit - Actually, IMDB lists this as May 1927, but the film itself says 1931 so not completely revolutionary. Warner and Disney were already doing sound cartoons by then. Still a nice period piece.

This was originally produced as part of the Life Cartoon Comedies series, a tie-in with the pre-Henry Luce version of Life Magazine. The guy who was credited as the editor, Robert E. Sherwood, was one of the editors of Life and its movie critic, was an Algonquin Roundtable regular, and later wrote The Petrified Forest. "Editor" is the credit anyway. How much he actually contributed is anyone's guess.
