The Women's NCAA tournament first and second rounds are hosted by the top 16 teams. Gonzaga was one of those 16 teams. All the host city's are determined just under a week before the tournament starts. You do realize that saying racial slurs in of itself is not a hate crime. In the United States hate speech is actually protected speech unless there is a tangible personal threat to a person or their property or imminent fighting words. What happened was repugnant and terrible but in order for it to be a crime the elements of intentional continued harassment and stalking and disorderly conduct will have to be proved. And the spotlight on the game itself is irrelevant to the law itself.

Context. Rap songs (written by black artists) seek to reclaim the n word within their communities (take women calling their friends “bitch” in an affectionate way. Offensive word reframed within the community to have a positive connotation). However, this is still a slur. You can call someone a bitch and mean it by its full definition. If the n word is thrown at a group of (mostly POC) people and then they are stalked back to their hotel, it is clearly being used out of hate. This is when it becomes offensive and hateful. Context is everything.
