In the opening verse "As I was searching from bottle to bottle for something unfoolish to say, that silver tongued devil just slipped through the shadows and smilingly stole her away' He was basically saying that when he gets a few into him, he turns into The Silver Tongue Devil. He can turn on the charm when he is into hi cups :)

Tally-Ho Tavern is an actual tavern in Nashville that Kristofferson frequented during the time he wrote this song circa 1972

Waltz is a country tradition waltz across Texas the Tennessee waltz are classics. Kristofferson could be absolutely hilarious and he had still does to the best of my knowledge a very dark sense of humor. And yes a lot of country music has some Irish and folk and bluegrass all mixed in. Absolutely great reaction guys I enjoyed it a lot

I've seen Kris in concert twice in the 90's. I've been a massive fan since the age of three. First song I can recall ever hearing was Why me Lord. As far as lyrics go I'm hard pressed to name people who are as equal. The nuance in his lyrics really shows off his Rhodes Scholar, English professor background. Everything else about him has always given me handsome hippy vibes. I don't think that would have ever really turned my head much. lol. Those genius lyrics of his though. Yum.

I am a descendent of some of those Italians that first introduced the mandolin to those early hillbilly musicians. My great-great-great grandfather, Vito Lucca Pellettieri, was an Italian musician and confectioner who, along with his sons, emigrated to Nashville in the late 1860's. By the mid 1870's his son Charles had formed a musical group called 'Charles Pelletieri's Nashville Orchestra & Mandolin Band' which played throughout the South for many year. Later Charles' son, whom he had named Vito after his own father, formed his own group called 'Pelletieri's Italian String Band' that also toured widely. Vito went on to become the music librarian for WSM Nashville back in the early day's of radio when the music was performed live to sheet music. One day a man named Hayes hired Vito as his stage manager his own show on WSM called The Grand Ole Opry(a position he held for the next 34 years). Vito was by no means himself a country artist but he was a close friend of Hank Snow and he also co wrote songs with the likes of Hank Williams. And although Vito was a trained violinist, and a longtime bandleader, his good friend and colleague, Roy Acuff, once upon hearing Vito play his violin is said to have told Vito that he was "an awful fiddle player". At any rate it is in more ways than one Italians have left their mark on country music.🎻🎶

It was the Tally Ho Tavern, maybe it was in a place near Oxford University. Kristofferson was a Texan and a Rhodes Scholar. Bill Clinton was also a Rhodes Scholar but came from Arkansas. I wonder if Bill met his wife at the Tally Ho? Both of these gentlemen have unique or uncommon histories. The reaction was good as always and I think Dustin was spot on with the drunks singing together in the bar or my backyard. As I mentioned before in earlier times, many of us drank for the wrong reasons. Kristofferson's style and ways with lyrics seem to elude many people. Take a few minutes and read his Bio. I'm glad I got lucky and found a bottle you liked, you had mentioned you liked oak, Rye & wheat. I'll keep trying, you guys and this whole crew are entertaining. Texas Steven, Kat, Donna and several others are a great core! Thanks again for all of you being here.

Actually the Tally Ho was in Nashville. Kristofferson was a bartender there for awhile while trying to break through

@@wgj4everlong426 It was the 426 in your screen name, it reminded me of the Dodge Charger R/T or Plymouth 426 GTX. My dream car was older, the 1965 AC Shelby Cobra 427 S/C. I wanted a used one in 67 and my dad wouldn't co-sign for me, too much money then but way too much now! He said he'd end up paying for the car & my funeral. He was likely right about that, so I turned 18 and joined the Army just before the draft notice came. The AC wasn't out of my mind just yet. The Army Corps of Engineers kept reminding me I wanted one. It was the association of initials, I guess.

The waltz (3/4 time) or two step was brought over by the Europeans 250 years ago along with mandolins, violins etc... Then as time went by it was applied to blue grass, country and some folk. So, yes you are going to hear it alot...but to me it is a local tavern or bar and guys and girls waltzing...or the county fair. Our great ,great grandfathers and grandmothers brought it and we adapted it to this country.

There are actually a lot of country music that is done in the tempo of a waltz. Tennessee Waltz, Strawberry Wine and a few others. So yeah, it is one but most likely on purpose.

"Lucille" by Kenny Rogers is another song that is very similar, both in how the music and the lyrics are structured. Your discussion about 3/4 time eventually helped me figure out why this tune felt familiar! I couldn't figure out what this song was reminding of, but when you were talking about the 3/4 waltz like feel to the song I realized that is what I was hearing. It took me a minute to figure out what other song I was thinking of, but I eventually figured it out!

Take Dustin back to WVA Keith and stop in to see D Ray White's family in Boone Co. They could show him how Irish funerals work, and maybe Jesco kin folk could do that waltz for you. Is the two step like a waltz? Heh heh.
