Some Old School suggestions: 50's: Johnny Cash "I Walk the Line"; Marty Robbins "El Paso" 60's: Patsy Cline "Crazy"; Loretta Lynn "You Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man" 70's: Waylon Jennings "Luckenbach, Texas": Kenny Rogers "The Gambler" Thanks!

This is a great starting list. Let me add two more decades: 80's: Don Williams "Good Ole Boys Like Me"; Randy Travis "Diggin' Up Bones" 90's: Joe Diffie "Prop Me Up Beside The Juke Box"; Diamond Rio "How Your Love Makes Me Feel" There are of course many good songs. I've tried to add some of my favorites that show different flavors of country music and maybe challenge some of the stereo types.

when Johnny Cash debuted this on his TV show the network executives said he couldn’t day stoned on the tv, someone said to say wishing lord I was home. Cash looked at Kris and Kris said that wasn’t what he was feeling when he wrote it.Cash never said what he was going to do and when he sang it looked up to the balcony where Kris was standing and emphasized the word stoned

This is definitely more traditional & it's over 50 years old. Johnny Cash released it too & his version has a bit of a different vibe, but both are 'old country'. There is a mellowness about this song. We can all envision the story he is painting for us. Kris is a writer & written many hits for others. He was also in a group called the Highwaymen, consisting of him, Johnny, Willie & Waylon Jennings. They were all close friends. Now just him & Willie are left. He wrote & made a great version of Me & Bobby McGee. Highly recommend.

When listening to Kris, its all about the WORDS. No one comes close to the emotions Kris makes you feel. Please don't poo-poo his talent. Another person to consider, is Merle Haggard, he was called the cowboy poet for a reason. I am going to really enjoy your exploration of country music. I'm old school, so I don't know much about the newer artists, so maybe I'll learn from you too!

“Somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringing, and it echoed through the canyon like the disappearing dreams of yesterday.” That’s just great writing. Kristofferson can write a lyric like Springsteen or Dylan, a line that’s so good it almost punches your soul out of your body for a second.

One of my favorites is Kris's For The Good Times. Also if you're checking out country, you really must look into an a capella group who won Sing Off in 2014 called Home Free. I've never been a fan of a capella until I tumbled onto these guys during quarantine when I saw their video of Man of Constant Sorrow. I had to watch it several times to convince myself that the guy didn't actually have a harmonica hidden in his hand! They call themselves a country all vocal band and they are incredible. There are three or four groups that are pretty good, but Home Free are a cut above. They do several Johnny Cash covers i.e. Folsom Prison Blues, Ring of Fire and Elvira. They also do covers of Boyz2men End of the Road and Keith Urban's Blue Ain't Your Color in a Temptations style. Brothers in Arms is a super cover of Dire Straits piece. They will blow your socks off. They do John Mayer's In The Blood. Their arrangements are amazing since they sound like a choir sometimes. Have subbed to see if/when you are impressed with them also.

You’re right. The thing I don’t like about country music is the obsession with alcohol. There is a saying that if you play country music backwards, your girl comes back, your dog is no longer dead, and life is fine. This song sure follows that formula.

More than "intelligent," Kris was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford in England. His father was a high ranking military officer. At some point, Kris was a Golden Gloves boxer. He was offered a position as an English professor at West Point. How pleased his parents must have been until Kris refused the offer. Kris moved to Nashville and took a job as janitor in the recording studio at Columbia Records where Johnny Cash did his recordings. Johnny apparently didn't listen until Kris (a veteran) borrowed a helicopter and landed on the lawn at Johnny's lakeside home.

Older country the main part of the songs is the lyrics, the music is there to accompany them. The lyrics in a great song will paint a picture in your head, because you can relate to them or see yourself in that picture, either you've been there, are there, or can see yourself going there, or maybe it's someone you know that's there and you know how they are doing. A great country song will be generic enough to impact a lot of people with enough details to really impact you. Also, back then "stoned" could also mean drunk. Try Merle Haggard "Sing Me Back Home".

Oddly enough, many of Kristofferson's best writing were songs that never got any radio play but which make up some of the best stuff on his albums. Two of my favorites are "Jesus Was a Capricorn" and "Border Lord". Of course now that I've said that, a whole list of his other "unknown" songs from those albums are flooding into my mind. LOL He was such a great songwriter that there was a time when nearly every country singer in Nashville wanted to record a Kristofferson song. And, of course, many did.

Kristofferson was a poet who just happened to have music in his soul, too. I was 16 in 1972, the height of my angsty years, and remember listening to this over and over and over in the cocoon of my bedroom. (I def didn't have a hangover, just resonated with the plaintive sounds and emotions with which he imbued this song.) I **wasn't** a country music fan, per se, back then (or now, really) - at least not the classical country. But back then all the designations and labels of music were melding, and mixing, and merging to offer up a LOT of new sounds and choices. Kristofferson and his music was among the best of them.

There are a lot of songs I could suggest, but one of my favourite albums by Kris is "Jesus Was a Capricorn", and from that album I'd suggest "Nobody Wins" or "Out of Mind, Out of Sight" - though honestly, the whole album. Oh, I should say, while I enjoy a lot of country, I'm actually more a rock fan - kind of on the progressive and the psychedelic side. So my while I do enjoy country, my view is from outside that genre.

When people request certain songs and they say to watch the live version, it's because they want to see your reaction to guitar playing and singing (like Chris Stapleton, he's the lead guitarist and singer) or a music video we want to see your reaction cuz your missing something!!!!! PLEASE change that rule?

By all means a bad rule for any reviewer not to watch the performance. If you like Rock music and Listen to the Who only, you miss more than half the show. Watch John Entwistle, the bass player, one of the best and he plays horns too! Not so much with the Who. They put on something to see at Shepperton Studios or any live shows.

I agree 100%, that is why I have not subscribed. I first watched the video for the reaction to Chris Stapleton/Tennessee Whiskey. I felt deflated when there was no video. So much is missed by not watching the video. BUT I gave it a chance and listened to all videos prior to that, no video to watch on any of them. 🫤 I know at least one if not more have suggested the absolute best acapella group, Home Free. I keep hoping to see a reaction video. BUT if there is no video, there is not much point. So much of Home Free comes from the way they do their videos. You get to see their many different facets-serious, goofy, comical, sad, patriotic etc… They have collaborated with Alabama, Kenny Rogers, Lee Greenwood, and the Oak Ridge Boy. Probably more I can’t think of right now. They aren’t just country either…. Definitely missing out by not watching videos..
