Two days after being drafted by the Boston Celtics in the 1986 NBA Draft, Len Bias was pronounced dead from a heart attack due to a apparent cocaine overdose. He was said to be just as talented as Michael Jordan and some say he would have gone down as Michael Jordans greatest rival. Today we look at what would happen if Len Bias never passed away.

Interesting question. Having Bias from '86 on would have given the Celtics tremendous versatility & strength for years to come & given everyone more rest & healthier bodies. Would have only needed minor additions to keep the dynasty rolling for another decade. With Reggie Lewis there too, they would have continued the greatness well into the mid-late 90's.

Len Bias was to wear #30 for the Celtics. Had he lived, the Lakers lose the 1987 Finals in 6 games, like the Celtics did without Bias. The Bad Boys Pistons dont exist, and the Celtics would have eaten in to the Bulls' first 3peat run. But no, instead that 131-92 game 6 blowout of the Lakers came 22yrs after they drafted Len Bias at pick #2.

Bias' jersey is #30, not #34! #34 was his college #, but #30 was his official # had he played. You forgot to put Reggie Lewis. Bias-Lewis duo would have been a lethal combo in the 90's had both of them lived.

You should look up Taj McDavid if you're interested in the Len Bias story. He was a high school baller who averaged a double double (26 points, 12 boards) and declared for the 1996 draft. Nobody ever heard of him, though, so he went undrafted and sort of disappeared after the draft. Turns out he's still alive, at least. Bleacher Report did a story on him a while ago. Some people thought he would've been really good in the NBA.

OK, Krispyflakes, there's a better way to get Len Bias into the game, at least it's more realistic. You rotate Bias in at both forward positions, maintaining the regular starting lineup: Ainge and DJ as the guards, Larry Legend at the 3, McHale at the power forward, and Parrish at center. Remember, that '85-86 Celtics team had a damn good bench, too: Jerry Sichting at guard, Scott Wedman relieving the wings, and Bill Walton at center and sometimes relieving McHale. Adjusting the roster, the bench rotation now uses Wedman primarily at the guards, Bias at both forwards, and Walton at center. That's more realistic. But let's do something even more realistic. Let's put him on the '86-87 Celtics. My contention (the part that actually matters) is what his worth to the team would've been. This Celtics team won 59 games, and was pretty banged up entering the playoffs, racked with injuries. Wedman went down early in the season and never returned. Walton had his usual injury riddled season and played only 10 games. Ainge injured his ankle late in the season, but continued to play on it. Parrish had a foot injury that ailed him late in the season. Most worrisome was McHale, with a late season foot injury that he came back too soon from and reinjured it (this shortened his career, and affected his play for the remainder of it, and he still limps on it to this day). In effect, he played the entire playoffs on one foot. Had Bias lived and (given his work ethic and the mentors he had-Bird, McHale, Parrish, Ainge, and DJ, future coaches all-there's every reason to believe he would have) developed reasonably quickly, the Celtics could well have been champions that season. Without Bias, this team bounced Jordan's Bulls in 3 straight, beat out the Bucks and Pistons (2 tough teams) in 7 games each, then stretched Magic Johnson's Lakers to six games (could easily have been 7) in this condition. Now, add Bias. My contention here is that McHale wouldn't have returned so soon and could have let that foot (hairline fracture of the navicular bone, which split wide open in the middle of the playoffs) heal, while Bias plays in his place; meaning McHale comes back healthy and rested (let that sink in for a minute!) for the playoffs and Bias has gained valuable experience. This means that Boston bounces the Bulls in 3, but it's probable that the Celtics defeat the Bucks in 4 straight and the Pistons in fewer than 7 games. This would've been a fresher Celtics team facing the Lakers. The Celtics also would've had a better bench rotation than they actually had. No Darren Daye, no Fred Roberts. Bias would've been coming off the bench to relieve both Bird and McHale, with McHale taking some minutes relieving Parrish, along with the injured Walton and Greg Kite. Sichting would still have been the primary sub at guard. Perhaps, given Bias' athleticism, he could even have been part of an odd lineup replacing Ainge, with Bias guarding Magic while DJ defended Byron Scott. Can you grasp what this would've meant? With a banged up starting lineup and virtually no bench, these Celtics came within a fumbled rebound of stretching these Lakers to 7 games. With Bias to keep Bird and McHale fresh (and indirectly help the situation at center and perhaps even at guard), this Celtics team could well have taken the championship that season by taking game 4 hands down and extending the lead in the first half of game 6 while avoiding that disaster of a third quarter. The next season, the Celtics drafted Reggie Lewis, another budding star, and he and Bias would have been the nucleus of a great bench for a couple of years. The Celtics could have well won another title the next season, with Bias and Lewis replacing the greats in later years as they wound down their careers, and with future additions like Dee Brown, the Celtics would have at least been contenders for most of the '90's.

Basically almost everyone alive (and old enough) living in Maryland in 1986 remembers the death of Len Bias. I tell people that he was the greatest men’s basketball player ever, and if he lived, you would understand why I stand by that statement. I wasn’t a Boston Celtics fan, but when they drafted Len, I knew they would be unbeatable for years to come. They Most of the time, would have played 4 on 5 offense. Dennis Johnson would work the point with, Parish, McHale, and Bias as the main players. Larry Bird could hand out on the wing and talk trash to the opposing bench. I can hear him saying, “You know, if they don’t score, with three seconds left, they will pass me the ball and I’ll shoot a three in your face . Then we’ll go on defense, stop you from scoring, and do it all over again.” Losing Bias was a big loss for everyone.

I truly believe the Celtics would have won in 87 & 88 and 3 peated. Bird won his MVp's 84-86. would the 87 and 88 Bias Celtics have won 70+ games Bird would have been MVP 5 times in a row. James Worthy (who was a fantastic forward) career would be looked at quite differently. Worthy was the number 1 draft pick, added to a championship team and would only have 1 ring. Would Worthy have been traded in 88? How would the Lakers been able to compete with the Celtics. Bird and Mchale would have been healthier and less injuries. The Bias Celtics could have taken away 1-2 rings away from Jordan. the 91 Celtics Lewis Bias, Bird, Parish, Mchale off the bench . Would Bias have had Pippen's spot on the 92 Dream Team. Would love to see Bias go up against Rodman and Pippen in his prime, especially with BIrd, just constantly feeding him alley-oop passes, The Celtics would have 2+ more rings possibly 3-4 with Bias.

This is not far off. There weren't too many question marks with this kid bias. He was very very special, he was hard working, humble. He would have been a perennial all star and world champion 3-5 times over. Just a tragedy, what a huge loss for that family. Then his baby brother Jay, a couple years later gets gunned down for some bullshit thing. And Jay was pretty good too. Not the same caliber as his brother, but few men ever have been. What a nice kid too seemed like. Rest in peace man.

KrispyFlakes Conspiracy theories to Len Bias death other than a drug overdose, like what? Btw, when I noticed that Len Bias wore the #34 like Paul Pierce. At first I thought maybe Pierce wore 34 in homage to Bias, yet you can see he actually wore 34 when he played for Kansas in College before he became a Celtic. Coincidence I guess. #34 89 Bulls vs 86 Celtics w/Len Bias thats a fun comparison, and a good what if? I don't think Bias was the complete player or level Jordan was. Yet he was a force, and freak athlete. I think he was in the mold, and level of Shawn Kemp. You put him on a loaded front court with the 86 Celtics, and that could have been a scary team with Bias, on a already loaded Celtics roster. R.I.P to Len Bias.

It's the easiest thing in the world to say he was the "next Jordan" since there's obviously no way we could ever know or prove such a thing. He was obviously a great college player and a fascinating NBA prospect but it's a giant leap to say he could've had anywhere near the impact of Jordan. His greatest attribute was his athleticism but exactly how that would've translated into the pro game is hard to say. He wasn't a great outside shooter or free throw shooter and there was a lot of his game that was still raw. If he had lived it's also impossible to say how addicted he might've become to cocaine and other drugs like so many of his draft class and era. His story is the great unknown that you can project whatever you want unto it.

Celtics would have 20+ titles if Bias never died smh and then a few short years later Reggie Lewis passed away double smh it was a dark period as a Celtics fan, I was only 6y/o but remember Bias dying vividly with how upset my dad was, born and raised in the Boston area, in the musk of the old Boston Garden back when they had elevated trains outside the Garden gates....what could have been....Bulls wouldn't have won as many titles for sure and Celitcs would be even greater
