I actually started this when she was 3 months, but had to put it on hold until she was around 10 months as I didn't want her in odd positions while her joints were developing. I would wait until around a year to not do any possible joint damage.

My dog was doing these positions on her own and I got annoyed with the begging and the rolling over asking for a belly rub.... so one day I started giving these behaviors a command... if she sat pretty, I would act as if I had just asked her to do it - "Good sit-pretty, Jasmine, good sit-pretty" with treats. Soon she would do it on command and doing it less on her own ;) I eventually switched to "stick-up!" with finger gun. Then ultimately, she had to understand "This is a stick-up! Put your hands in the air where I can see them". A long sentence for a dog, but she knew the key word was 'stick up' combined with the finger gun. Used same process for being 'dead' when she rolled over, and teaching 'Bang". Then one day, instead of practicing sit, down, sit, down, leave it, etc. it was 'this is a stick up...!" and "Bang, Bang". That was 14 yrs ago and she still does the trick today - a little wobbly on her balance, a lot slower on the drop and roll over (arthritis) but she still love to show off what she knows. And thank God, I've always combined verbal with hand gestures because now she doesn't hear either.... but we can still communicate with the gestures for all her commands.

I also taught this to my mother-in-laws mongrel, due to back-yard a**holes, bad breeding he has too much muscle in his back legs and can't sit down like a normal dog so he has always done sit pretty for the sit command, this trick has been the only silver lining he learned it in less than 10 mins. Was so heart warming to see his overgrown legs don't stop him being able to do cool tricks.

It helps aid in the training, it lets the dog know that it's getting a reward/is doing the right thing when they hear the click. It's a very simple and very effective method for training and makes training A LOT easier.

+Kristin Crestejo (Modern Canine Training) I am completely new to dog train soo I have two very basic questions. 1-How much time do I need to train my dog per day in any simple training? For example sit or stay commands. 2-Does the click stuff makes a great enhacement to the training or the rewards are just fine? Thanks a lot.
@stepierhodes3870
@stepierhodes3870 8 жыл бұрын
+felcas 2- The clicker is just a marker to say they did it right, like saying "Yes" or "Good Boy" just a more consistent sound. If you have a hard time remembering to mark or your inconsistent with how you do it the clicker maybe a good tool for you. Your other question is harder to answer. I would suggest when first teaching any command to do it every day till the dog seems to grasp the trick really well. But you don't necessarily have to, really depends on the dog. Hope this helps you out, I'm sure you wanted a response from the video maker but figured I'd try to help out.
@felcas
@felcas 8 жыл бұрын
+Stepie Rhodes yeah I would like a response from Kristin but yeah I apreciate a lot your answer as well, positive participation is always welcome. I still would like to know how much time or tries (rewards) should I do per day to get a consistent training. I am doing like 10 to 15 rewards a day for the sit command alone. Now I have a diferent problem, my dog loved my garden and digged it all, me and my wife got really furious over that as she destroyed all the garden that gave us soo much work to do for 2 years. We spent 3 days redoing it and I need to keep her in teh leash and position my self in an agressive posture near the garden like an alpha dog would claim its territory, I do that several times a day. I guess it is working but I would apreciate any other suggestiong.
@Krissykris1468
@Krissykris1468 8 жыл бұрын
+felcas I would completely agree with the other answer. The clicker makes a very distinguishable sound which helps keep the mark consistent. Sometimes when we use the reward, your hand movement will be caught as the "mark" by the dog, that can get confusing if you move your hand during any training - the dog will stop, thinking it's end of behaviour. However, if you don't want to use a click, you can simply replace the click with YES (verbal marker). In regards to the time per day, it's difficult to say, every dog is different so it would depend on the dog you have. Luna gets about 2 hours of exercise and around 1.5 hours of mental stimulation. Mookie is good with 1 hour of exercise and 30 minutes of mental stimulation. Just watch for when the dog disengages from training, then next time you know it's right around that mark. Hope this helps!

+Kristin Crestejo (Modern Canine Training) Thanks a lot Kris! By the way, let me ask this: sometimes Hope (my dog) become uninterested for the training (she is very energetic) and I started to shake my hand to show her the reward, then I noticed my own behgavior and I started asking myself if that isok or wrong at all, may signal her that I am bribing instead of training a command???
