In this tutorial you will learn the cue "leave it" along with 5 exercises in which to use this cue. Each exercise will increase in difficulty as you progress through them. If your dog already knows a leave it, start with exercise 2 and work your way up. By the end of all exercises your dog should have better listening skills and self control in real situations.

I love the science based methods, and I love that these videos are showing how a dog learns, rather than a demo dog that already knows how to do it. I think it's great that you provide a step by step guide to positive dog training.

Shari Key I love how she gives the stages and where you might want to stop and how much to expect each time! I've felt like a loser dog owner so many times when mine doesn't "get there" by the end of a couple training sessions cuz "the dog in the video seems to get it".

I'm watching my friend's miniature Australian Shepherd and got to step three with him in about 5 minutes. Then I worked with him on other tricks and I definitely noticed an improvement. He normally isn't focused on me at all but after this he paid perfect attention. Thanks so much for this helpful video!! ^.^

Thanks for this video! Last night i brought my puppy (A former stray) to his first puppy class and it was a mixed bag. We werent able to get into the group because of his lack of impulse control. Ive only had him 2 weeks and couldnt tell if he was agressive or fearful (Barks at other dogs even though we have dogs at home) but the trainer worked with me and him and evaluated him and says theres no agression and only a small amount of fear. A LOT Of over excitement and lack of impulse control. He happens to be a pit so im so happy to see a dog of similar type learning in the video. Thank you!

All dogs/people are individuals , a clicker might work fine for my dog but it does not work for me . My puppy manage to walk past a meatball toward me and looks att me until i say ok . None of those test are a problem for her and i still don't use a clicker . She is almost 5 months and can sit , stay , bark , stop barking , fetch , lay down , walk free beside me , getting better att coming when called , stop and stay when i say stop , and yesterday she stopped when she started to hunt a rabbit . mix rottweiler german shepherd , husky . Almost 5 months old and i am very proud of her .

People push the clickers a lot, but really, what they're pushing is just communication. Do you say things like "YES!" or "GOOD GIRL!" when she does well? It's the same thing, it just spans a larger time frame, so you aren't marking the minute behaviors- something that's totally okay for a pet dog, and maybe not the best for something like a dog that needs to be in movies and they need to train tiny motions/emotions quickly.

I mostly have issues with my dog dropping stuff, now even more (18 months old and full on in her teenager rebel phase). When I play tug with her she'll let go most of the time, but now she likes grabbing whatever she can get whether it's cleaning rags, dish towels, socks, etc. And she will NOT let go. She'll even run away and hide udner a table or try to get away whereever, ignoring any and all come. She will NOT trade for treats either, no matter how tasty the treat (ie ham). OR if she considers it, she'll place her object under her paws and will immediately muzzle back at it if you try and take it while giving or offering her the treat. If you place the treat further away she'll either take the object iwth her or she'll only briefly drop it and then go right back to it... Everything else she mostly listens, except sometimes she doesn't want to because of her rebel phase, but I make her. Just this is the major issue, and it's driving me nuts, because she'll also rip up documents or whatever she can get (she was never much of a destroyer in terms of anything, esp. not furniture or shoes prior) or chew up glasses...
@youtubemodsaresnowflakelef7692

And if I try to hold the treat to her nose, she just turns away like "I'm not seeing/smelling it".

My four year old lab girl is like that. She listens to me when at home but once out of the house she is a nightmare. Remember the video 'Fenton'. Yeah, she is like that. She was like totally shut off to my voice when outside. We even went for basic training classes when she was young and believe me, she passed with flying colours! There were other dogs there too! And it didn't distract her one bit when we sat for the test. We passed but then when we were really out somewhere else she was like 'I'm free! I'm free!' I really need to retrain her lol!
@nategough1230
@nategough1230 8 жыл бұрын
+SexySheerah I have (hopefully soon it will be had) the same issue here's something I have been doing that's helping my dog It's called watch me but i prefer to use my dog's name get a high value treat (I use cat treats it might sound weird but they are absolutely coated in fat the ones i use are 23% so I only use them for this to make them more special and not get her fat.) after that let her smell it then bring it up to in between your eyes you should eventually fade out the treats when she can hold eye contact for 30 seconds or more. Just like recall training when she can do it for an amount you're happy with start moving to places with slightly more distractions this will build up her impulse control aka want, take, have and if she doesn't like treats use a ball with a squeaker or something. One last thing with my dog when she starts yapping and going crazy on the lead when we see another dog i don't let her greet them and definitely not off the lead giving her what she wants is just reinforcing it and If she realizes she can't get to the dogs she might give up because It's not getting her results just making her tired and the desensitization of seeing dogs will make her less excited to see them.

The treat for the tug toy didn't work well for me. She'll either leave the toy for the treat and not want to play anymore or she just ignores the treat. However- my dog will push the toy into my hand when she wants to play and will even chase my hand with the toy in it so she can yank it away again. Great fun. She will never let me take it however. She always grabs it as soon as it moves again. So..since she wants to play so bad, if she drops it and then grabs it again when I want it, I just stand up and stop playing for like 2-5 seconds until she drops it again. If she goes for it when I do, I just stand up again. When she lets me take it, I reward her with more play. She figured that out faster than I did and now all I have to do is work on moving the toy away from her faster and faster while she leaves it. It is much harder for humans to learn how to train dogs than it is for the dog to learn what you want. Modifying a lesson like that..it took me a few days to figure out how to get that toy away from her without distracting her or yanking it away faster than she can get it or using a treat. She figured out what I wanted in one play session. It is also really important to not use a command if you think your dog is too distracted to do what you want.

We have 2 sets of the toys- those our dog plays with and our toys that we play with. Whe our dog comes to us with one of his toys we ignore hiim until her goes away then we call him over and will play with him with one of our toys. We then stop play when we want to and take out toy away.

There is a reason. You just have to figure it out. From what I've seen, just barking is from being bored. A dog that has been out on a long walk, or given a job. Dosent bark "for no reason" 😉

I will definitely be proofing my dog's leave it. My only worry is his prey drive. If he happens to get a squirrel and...well you know, will that make his kill more of a reinforcer? He's never actually gotten a squirrel but he's come close. Do you think a jackpots would help him out?
@Krissykris1468
@Krissykris1468 10 жыл бұрын
Definitely when a dog kills a smaller animal due to prey drive it reinforces that behaviour. A leave it is a very good way to deter your dog even chasing an animal, so you're stopping him/her before they even get started.

Eveytime these all positive trainers try to bamboozle you they use the word cruelty free and science based. Dogs are dogs and pack animals that communicate with eachother through body language and vocal signals such as growls for the purpose of avoiding confrontation. Dogs correct eachother all the time, so why is it unethical to do so ourselves when done effectivly and humanly. Answer is that it is not wrong to at all. There is a world of difference between correcting a dog and abusing a dog. A true professional knows the difference, the least of force or correction required to correct without being harsh. Balanced trainers use all 4 quadrants as everyone should. Now studying the way dogs communicate and following in their steps, that's science based, based on mother nature. Check your emotion at the door cuz it has NO place in dog training.
@Krissykris1468
@Krissykris1468 6 жыл бұрын
Travis Peach A) I'm not a purely positive only trainer. So you should get your facts straight before labelling. B) using physical corrections wouldn't be necessary if you truly knew how to use positive reinforcement properly. C) there are animal behaviourists that tell you not to use positive punishment on animals, so what scientific evidence that is up to date are you quoting? Cesar? Lol, oh god, you are.
