Krista Tippett, host of award-winning NPR program “On Being“, and poet David Whyte discusses several of the life-sized concepts addressed in Tippet's book, Becoming Wise: an inquiry into the mystery and art of living.
In 2014, Tippett received the National Humanities Medal at the White House for ‘thoughtfully delving into the mysteries of human existence.’ Her radio program, On Being, “shines a light on the most extraordinary voices on the great questions of meaning for our time. Scientists in a variety of fields; theologians from an array of faiths; poets, activists, and many others have all opened themselves up to Tippett’s compassionate but searching conversation." Whyte has been a guest on her show.
In _Becoming Wise_, Tippett distils the insights she has gleaned from years of luminous conversation into a coherent narrative journey, over time and from mind to mind, into what it means to be human. Critics say the book is “a master class in living, individually and collectively. Wisdom emerges through the raw materials of the every day.”

I love this quote: We have not answered all of our questions, nor have we solved all of our problems, but we are confident that we are confused on a higher level and about more important things.

Krista Tippett has a body, a face and hair. Who knew?! I've loved listening to her years. Her interviews are so intimate, thoughtful and beautiful. I knew abstractly that she was a physical person, but actually seeing her speak is surreal. It's so weird.

"On becoming wise"? My sister loves Krista Tippett and invited me to watch this video. I'm halfway through, and what I've decided is that I'd prefer to be a dunce. I love my life as it is. I love solving puzzles, both logic and jigsaw. I love making people smile, and I love when I smile. I love reading books, all kinds of books. I love looking at snowscapes and thunderstorms. I love being with my children, and I love being alone. I have no complaints. I don't want to dissect what makes life good for me. I'd rather live it.

Unfortunately, we're entering a reality where if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. I believe that. The stakes have risen and simply living one's life implies a complacency that the world cannot afford. The challenge is in how to not get too weighed down by it all. People like Whyte and Tippett (while maybe not ideal) can help here.

These two definitely balked at the sexuality topic, which was a little disappointing. Also, I don't think Whyte's blending of being and becoming was adequate to address the question posed. Maybe he believes they are synonymous, but for most of us being and becoming express the battle between self-acceptance and self-improvement. That's no small issue. Finally, I don't think Whyte entertained the idea of boredom as a catalyst. This really speaks to one of the larger issues of our day...getting people to disengage from sensory input. The questioner feels that this is where real progress begins and so do I. Yuval Harari also talks about the possibilities that arise from embracing boredom. Other than these three things, great talk.

Why are we here? As children, we were always asking why. Lincoln said the very same thing, that he was amazed at how many people stop asking questions way too soon in their lives. Profound questions that can be answered. If one is looking for spiritual enlightenment, the practice of Falun Dafa Falun Gong is a heart and mind cultivation practice, totally free, with approx. one hundred million practitioners worldwide. It consists basically of two books and five gentle exercises.

I've always admired Krista Tippett enormously...until I viewed this interview. What I see here is someone rather too self-possessed and rather arrogant and perhaps a tad too proud of herself. Lacks real humility. Needs to do some further serious work on herself in my view. Get right down in the soup. She seems to think she's rather "all that." And for me, she's not quite there yet.

I think she is not afraid, as so many of us are, to be herself. Others of us that aren't afraid, are that way out of superiority, but the sense I get from her is that she would want and work for everyone to be able to do the same, to be themselves without fear. But that is my interpretation, I'm sure I have much to learn from your perspective.
