I love the subject matter but I'm in my early 50s(53) and a former distance runner and we were doing this back in the 1980s when I was in high school. During the week we ran with the whole team(alone on weekends) and we did our lifting at night in our basements at home. Everything old is new again. Love your content.

@@Kristi-Eramo-OConnell Things just get "relabeled." Back in the 80s they were calling it cross training rather than hybrid training. Nike came out with their 1st pair of cross trainers when I was in high school. They came up with the catch phrase "Just Do It" in order to push the shoes. A year later Tiger(ASICS) came out with their 1st pair of cross trainers and the catch phrase : " Don't Just Do It, Do It Right." A few years ago after crossfit grew to the point it has now, Tiger stopped making cross trainers. In a way crossfit sort of replaced cross training. I've been at it for roughly 39 years now and like to look at the crossfit "stuff" to come up with ideas for my own workouts. I do a lot of modifying and scaling. Over the last few years I've added several DIY pieces to my equipment collection based on your videos.

I started running in my 40's - Having discovered heavy lifting first as part of my 68 lb. weight loss journey. My first 5K was kind of a fluke, just planned on a fun family event but got hooked. That was 2011 and around that time there was definitely a divide. 'True' lifters got shamed for running (the message was you don't need cardio, lifting can be cardio, running just makes you skinny fat, etc.) Runners rarely lifted and really had to be talked into using weights instead of banded clamshells as their 'weights.' So yes, athletes back in the 80's (I was a tennis player then) lifted as well but there was definitely a stretch there where it was one OR the other and if you did lift weights as a runner you weren't doing deadlifts. You were doing light weight, high rep stuff.
@albertfischer8804
@albertfischer8804 Жыл бұрын
@@jenniferring6410 First off, good for you in terms of becoming healthier. In terms of running and lifting my experience was completely different than yours. At the same time I have to agree with you that there is a very prevalent mindset that you are either a lifter or an endurance person. That being said, I was doing things like deadlifts back in high school, but then again I went to an all male school were there were at most 4 female teachers at the time and the testosterone level was rather high. When I went on to undergrad I learned even more about lifting from other guys in the university weight room. I wore out my left knee shortly after graduating from undergrad and lifting then became an even bigger thing for me. Currently I do one 22 mile walk a week with a pack along with other shorter ruck walks through out the week. Lifting is still a big thing for me and I have been building my home gym for over 39 years now. Have been doing yoga at home since August of '18 because it helps with my arthritis. Good luck keeping up with the healthy lifestyle and having fun at the same time. Have a great weekend especially if you are entered in a race.

I first got put onto Hybrid training through Nick Bare, you guys should definitely link up and try to do a podcast together to discuss! Side note - would love to hear you and Pat talk about breathing techniques during long runs. I’ve been using nasal breathing only the last year and have seen improvements in my zone 2 paces but can definitely be frustrating when hitting inclines or when it’s warmer outside.

An alternative to the db tricep extension is the bb French press. I take a narrow grip, think sdhp. You’ll use the same movement pattern as the tricep extension, but now you don’t have the head of the db hitting your shoulders and back of your head.

Love your content. My challenge is that I am just not aerobically fit- or at least I don't feel I am. I use Garmin and every time I do a hard run or harder CrossFit workout, I need 3 days of recovery! I am a 49yo non-obese male and ran a half marathon last year (2:40) and can do a 5k in about 30-35 minutes. It's incredibly demotivating because I want to do these things, but It just wipes me out. I started CrossFit in Nov 22 (that is how I found you and your channel 🙂) and I have seen some definite strength gains but I cannot seem to get my Aerobic system in check. Our programming has metcon on almost every workout so they last about 60 minutes. When it comes to running, I can stay in zone 2 for about the first mile of a 5k, then it inevitably jumps to zone 4 unless I slow waaaaay down. The content is great but I feel there are many of us that struggle to get it done that are motivated and show up and just don't see the results we are looking for.
@Kristi-Eramo-OConnell
@Kristi-Eramo-OConnell Жыл бұрын
Hey! First it sounds like you are working your butt off! and 2:40 is moving! My suggestion would 1) add in some longer zone2 bodybuilding style workouts (that is what we call them in our programing) that wont beat you up /take it out of you the same way traditional metcons tend to if repeated with intensity day after day. Also, would suggests starting that first mile slower, at a painfully slow pace and holding onto that pace or even building up. Spending 40-60 min in zone 2 should help move the needle.. but you do need to be in zone2, no mater what the pace is!

The more your elbow comes out for bicep curls, the more you take the stress off of the bicep. Even tho' getting the volume training is essential, maintaining proper mechanics is as well. How much tendon or joint pain have all of you been getting? Slowing the eccentric part of the movements may help, but not when doing AMRAP .

How did you manage squatting and deadlift with running? I'm talking about the energy needed to run. If I squat I become more tired on the legs and it keeps my runs a bit more difficult. If I deadlift I tend to need more rest before a run or I can get injured, so I try to deadlift with lighter weights and a bit more reps. Running pushes a lot on my hamstrings, and if I push on deadlifts, I feel it while running. Do you feel the same way? What's your approach on this?
