I grew up on a ranch and we had herding dogs that worked stock. We never killed any of them. We had one puppy that was so excitable around stock that he couldn't work properly. We gave him away to an appropriate home.

That being said, surrendering a dog to experienced trainers or a competently run shelter is completely appropriate. There are even hundreds of breed specific rescue organizations that also evaluate the animal in question, work to rehabilitate any issue the pet may have and make proper and safe placements in a new home. I have owned and worked with thousands of animals in my lifetime, including breeding,training and grooming dogs, and i would almost vouch, sight unseen, that this dog would not meet the criteria in which euthanasia is the only option. First, this dog is not known to be a viscous breed. In fact, they tend to be great family dogs. Second, her complaints initially were regarding her frustration of the dog not performing,ruining her hunt, and attacking chickens that she apparently let the dog have access to. She then suggests the dog allegedly was aggressive possibly when she tried to separate the dog during the attack,but also states she had used electric shock as a mode of training. What I see here is negligence, inexperience of the nature of dogs,improper training and abuse which can cause stress and be counterproductive, causing an animal to act out and be aggressive. These can also cause a dog to develop major trust issues and become a viscous animal, but that is usually in severe cases over time. This dog was still young, acting on its bird dog instincts, and probably confused as hell when Noem wasn’t happy when it was nabbing chickens. Sad that it had to lose its life over rather typical bird dog behavior, and in such a cruel way.

I actually quite liked her until her judgment lapse on this dog story and her subsequent failure to admit the truth. Thankfully, this happened now rather than mid campaign because she was short listed for VP. No question.
