Actually amazing to see from a content and a human perspective. I love to watch clean up and sort out videos, but the way it was done so delicately to include who you are and what you already have was just so tasteful. It was respectful to you and your lives and hopefully it feels good and helps you continue to grow! All three of you really deserve this.

as someone with adhd who grew up with low level hoarders with undiagnosed adhd it's actually really nice to see a successful public figure have a messy home. like i really appreciate the honesty and vulnerability of showing everyone your place. i always feel like i have to have a picture perfect home if im gonna be successful in xyz (which doesnt entirely make sense). i havent finished the video yet but i just wanted to express this appreciation for you 🖤🖤

I felt this so much. I sent this video to my friends expressing how much it resonated with me, and even though I have friends over frequently who see my messy room I'm still embarrassed to send a photo of it over to them. I grew up with one parent who hoards and one who excessively organizes and I think my brain always wants to be organized but gets stressed when not knowing where to start, and I always think it's a problem with me because I feel perfectly fine living in my messy space, so it's such a breath of fresh air seeing that people like me can still have their own sense of space while changing to be a little more organized!

You too? My father is a hoarder, but my mother has him limited to a room on each floor. Upstairs is his bedroom, downstairs is his den, and unfortunately the basement is one room, and he has all of it. They live in a 5000 square foot house. (Upstairs and downstairs). The basement is a 2500 sqft black hole. Luckily it has a garage door. My father, mother, and both siblings are adhd, as am I.

Like this organizer said, it's very easy to become disorganized then your brain just kind of pauses forever. It takes something to spark it in you that you're disorganized to finally either seek help organizing or do it yourself. I definitely don't typically see disorganization as being a failure, lazy, etc it's just overwhelming. The issue is that being disorganized won't help anything.. if anything, it'll just make you feel even more overwhelmed and stressed. It becomes a pretty harsh loop because being overwhelmed and stressed typically makes you not want to clean, organize, etc.
@ElizabethHoward
@ElizabethHoward 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I actually adored the way the organizer put that. You pause cuz you can't handle it and then... nothing. Because you still don't have the solutions. It's hard to get over that hurdle.

I think it was really brave of you to show your house in a messy state before the organisers cleaned it up and helped you sort it all out. I find it really inspiring because I have a hard time keeping my own space clean and tidy especially after the last two years. My mental health has really gone downhill and I am doing the same thing - cleaning up mess, throwing out bags of trash, and decluttering. It's hard because my BDD and agoraphobia have really kicked in and I have panic attacks when I go outside, but thank you . It helps to now that I'm not alone

It’s a really important point to make- the role that mental health plays in our physical spaces. As someone who lives with someone who has OCD and depression, I’ve seen this firsthand. It’s easy to judge someone on their space, but if you don’t know what’s going on internally, you’re missing the biggest part of the picture.

I am willing to get rid of things, so I don't think I'm a hoarder. There is not trash around. I see the task as so over whelming, too. And it's a Big task, and ALL feels like it's a priority, so I don't start. But I was advised to take small steps, micro if needed, by doing small actions and see how it worked. It helped and I found myself going further and doing more. I think getting started can be the hardest . The satisfaction can be very empowering. Good luck on your journey. BTW: my mantra while thinking about starting was "it's only work".

I was recently diagnosed at 31 and life post treatment is I’m not exaggerating, a breeze. My house is clean and tidy yet I’m not constantly cleaning and that’s one of the smallest improvements treatment made fo my life. It doesn’t happen overnight but having the right meds and building good habits means little by little I got my house the way I want if for the first time ever. I used to think of being organized as a burdensome task with a positive outcome, but now I genuinely see it as a small time investment With a positive outcome. All about progress, not perfection. This video totally is a lense into my brain when I was trying to figure out housekeeping

Honestly, the relief I feel when others show their messy homes is immeasurable. In this age of Instagram and home decor blogs and websites, it is so easy to feel like I’m the only one with a horribly messy home. It’s also so helpful to hear that it’s not an issue of being lazy, it’s too many decisions. That rings so true, because every time I’ve had to pack or move or purge I very quickly get overwhelmed and fatigued. Maintaining systems is so doable, but when you don’t have systems set up it feels so overwhelming to start. I was 100% eyeballing my apartment while watching this trying to decide which area to start purging.

This x1000. I still live with my parents (I'm in my 20s) and because they never established systems, and/or let the few they had disappear, I followed suit. I just stumbled on this video because it was recommended to me randomly. And I have to say I absolutely love it. The total validation and normalizing that some people simply struggle with organization and tidiness in the home. Me AND my partner both have ADHD and our house is always a disaster. I feel ashamed of it, and wish I could be better at cleaning up (Which is what lead me to getting diagnosed with ADHD, because I couldn't get myself to work on my house even with a ton of free time). But at the same time I am not so judgemental of others who have messy houses because I understand it's a struggle. It's not that I WANT to live in a messy house or that I'm not bothered by it. It's just that my disorder keeps me from having it be as tidy as I'd like. Thank you for sharing!!

Yesssss!! People think having OCD automatically makes you a "neat freak". "Oh, nay, nay." -Bailey Sarian It can cause you to feel SO overwhelmed by the slightest kink in your chain that you physically *cannot* move forward. The mess stays and grows because there is no way for you to even begin to process how to start, how to fix it; full on panic attacks can ensue and, so, you freeze. You don't even need to have OCD or mental illness of any type to feel stuck or frozen. It can happen to *anyone* . You're perfectly normal. It's fine. And I promise the people who love you the most?? Well, they don't care about a mess here and there. They'll probably even try to help--let them. Stay safe, laugh, smile, love!! ❤

I also have OCD and ADD! If you're feeling motivated, might I recommend you adopt my F**k-It Bucket solution? I'm very organized (now, as the result of years of grueling effort) and the exception is a large metal bucket in the hall closet. Therein I stick all the stuff that doesn't have a space or that I think I should donate but don't quite want to part with yet. Don't know what to do with it? F**k it, it goes in the bucket. It sounds silly or obvious or like it'll just immediately get out of control, but I cannot express to you the relief I (and several of my friends, yay) feel knowing it's okay to always have one small mess and it is manageable and healthy and contained and everything else is good. It became sooo much easier to have that sort of allowance/default/fallback, and it made me immediately feel okay about having the stuff inside the bucket because now it wasn't floating around loose creating mess.

This opened my eyes so much... I am a single, 25 year old full time mom/full time student who also works part time, living in my own 2 bd 2 ba apartment in CA with my 5 yr old son for over 3 years now. I measure a lot of my success based off of how messy our home is. I feel if I can't keep a home relatively clean all the time, then I am not a successful or worthy person. Seeing the way their apartment is made me feel like it is not the basis or measure for/of success - considering my apartment is much more tidy, & they are wayyyy more successful. I'm thankful I came across this perception-altering video.

The mini purges are so crucial, I wasn’t very good at any of this until my daughter was born and did a HUGE purge of her baby stuff when she was around 18 months. It was overwhelming so I try to purge her stuff quarterly and mine periodically as well (at least twice a year once I rotate between winter and summer clothes and more often with beauty products). Makes it all so much less overwhelming!

Maybe it's my age, but I would not stay married to a person who transitioned. We could be very good friends, but since I'm not attracted to the same sex, I would probably feel betrayed. I think that would be a pretty common response. Does that mean Kristin is bisexual or gay?

Honeybear just has the sweetest little face! I will say, as the owner of two dogs, it's a lot easier to keep floors free of human clutter when you have a puppy around. A big motivator in reorganizing my house was getting my dogs, and they motivate me to try and keep things in order

RIGHT?!? I didn’t know how to phrase it without sounding like I’m accusing them of adopting to help clean the floor (and I’m NOT) but boyyyy does having animals around make you hypervigilant and take more care of areas they interact with. It helps to get you out of your head, when you’re looking out for someone else!

Ikr, nice to see a video that isn't someone who just hired the professional for the content on the level of 'Oh no, the inside of my cabinets are unorganised because the spices and cans are mixed'. My room looks like Kristin's did in the beginning and I found it nice to see, plus that the organiser wasn't focused on one standard way of organising, like how the makeup went in a cart instead of a drawer because in this situation it was working better.

Feeling seen 😂 The tip off for me, that I'm starting to backslide emotionally/mentally, is when I stop making my bed, that's the snowball. After I had similar assistance from an organizer, I keep it up by having a cleaning person come in once a month. If you have any hoarding tendencies, depression, etc. just like your organizer said, the energy changes dramatically, once everything is organized and clean. Having a cleaner is intrinsic to my mental health, and is worth every single penny.

Me and my family used to have a house like that. We’re a big family so everyone is always putting stuff everywhere in each other’s spaces and everyone is always annoyed. So after me and my siblings got therapists, my mom asked one of my sisters long time therapist to come help give away some donations. We all expected to have a few kids come help but there was almost 50 of us cleaning out everything and by 3 hours we were halfway done. It’s been almost 2 months since then and I’ve been keeping track with cleaning. We all seem to be a lot more calmer and less annoyed with stuff here and there lol

As many others have said I really appreciate the emotional recognition and approach that this video took. The organizer acknowledging all of the mental blocks and problems that create disorganization and mess instead of calling them a failure or laziness or anything I think is huge and was something I didn't know I needed to hear. My house looks a lot like this and I really resonate with a lot of the struggles Kristin has shared surrounding that, and watching this made me feel like maybe I could do it too. This is so comforting to watch actually! I moved out of my parents' house almost a year ago into a studio, and this is honestly what it looks like most of the time, especially when I'm mentally not the best.. So when I know people are coming over, I need 1 day to mentay prepare for cleaning, and another day to actually do the cleaning, even though my space is quite small, and this gives me extra mental stress. So seeing other people face the same struggle is quite comforting, thank you!

I used to live like this. My room when I was a kid /teenager and then my first one-room-apartment. It got better when I lived in my two-room apartment but was still a bit chaotic and a lot of stuff. Then I did the Konmari method and it completely changed my life!!! It took me two or three months to do the whole apartment while being a full time student, but once it was done it was so freeing and my home never was the same. Now I live in another apartment and to start living here with only what I need and love is so amazing. I still get little piles /moments of chaos from time to time but it's super easy to fix. So when I am super chaotic in a phase of a lot of work, I can clean everything in 1-2 days and that's it *-* I love it!! Love the Konmari method (read the book 2 times and watched her netflix shows aswell as watching the Home Edit) - the lifechanging magic of tidying up

It is so good for people to be able to help us turn our physical spaces around which can help in our mental health journeys. Maybe it would also be helpful to see which space overhauls help most and how each person refines different parts as they use them. Also seeing how some organize solutions don't work for others would help us process when similar solutions aren't working for us.
