Yes, I'm a straight size but it's okay to be bigger or smaller and get rid of what you don't fit anymore. Our bodies change over time so why not change up your clothes with it? Sometimes I gain fat and sometimes it's muscle but every time I outgrow my clothes. It's normal.

When getting rid of clothes, I think it's important to have someone there who understands you as support. I really love how Jen is there supporting what Kristin wants to keep, but also reminding her that even if something fits, if she doesn't love it, then she shouldn't keep it. I think I needed to see someone just casually being like “yup this doesn’t fit goodbye” because I feel so guilty getting rid of clothes I’ve hardly worn that just don’t fit. I’ve been recovering from being at an unhealthily low weight for years and I’m now struggling one to get rid of things but also to get things that actually fit...especially because I’m semi plus size now? A lot of normal sizes don’t fit me, but I think I’m a little bit smaller than Kristen so I don’t know what’s going on. I’ve been wearing my partners sweat pants since we started college because I straight up don’t own pants that fit me and don’t know how to go shopping and get more without getting super triggered by sizes.
@deenam2567
@deenam2567 3 жыл бұрын
For the getting triggered by sizes thing, this may or may not work depending on what’s close to you, but shopping at flea markets or thrift shops that don’t really label sizes is really nice! It not only avoids the triggering sizes but also sizes don’t uniformly match to different across brands or bodies, so I find it really refreshing. Again though, depends on availability near you!
@mediumjimmy
@mediumjimmy 3 жыл бұрын
@@deenam2567 thank you for the suggestion I really appreciate it 🥺💜 I’m trying to mentally prepare myself for buying “summer clothes” and I feel very fortunate that my partner is so supportive and kind around these things. I hope we have some luck at the second hand stores near us.

I completely understand the size fear. I've fluctuated between 230-290 over the years, and my weight can change rapidly over the span of a few weeks. The thrift idea is great, but I know that the plus options in my local thrift stores aren't great. The thing that has helped me is actually finding stores or brands that have forgiving sizing. Usually at Walmart I can fit a XL or 2XL, I don't think I ever need a 3XL, unless I am looking for something very over sized. Where are Target, I could not find a single item of clothing that fit me. Not an XL or a 2XL, and they did not carry anything bigger then that. So even though I don't think of my self as that big, I felt humongous. I actually recommend online shopping over store shopping. Take you measurements, and read the size chart and all of the reviews, and usually things will fit. I find this takes a lot of the pressure off, since you aren't getting stuck in to tight clothing, or feeling judged by sale associates, or getting overheated and overwhelmed in the fitting room. Over time you find what brands and styles work best for you body type. And you will also see that, especially in women's clothing, the number means nothing. I am anywhere from an 20-24 a XL-3XL depending on brand, cut, and desired fit, lol. Just as long as the clothes bring you joy, that is all that matters. 💜

You might find some success with more inclusive brands like Universal Standard. They have great basics to help you build your wardrobe. In the descriptions of the clothing item you can see a model for each size offered so you find a model with a body shape like yours to help you find the correct size. The items are a bit spendy, but wash really well and last for a long time.
@Olivia-jw5sd
@Olivia-jw5sd 3 жыл бұрын
If it's within your budget, I've found a lot of success with style boxes (especially plus-size specific ones like Dia&Co). I think it's less triggering for me because I only had to put my sizes/measurements on my profile at the beginning of my membership. I don't even have to look at or think about the sizes on the clothes I get, I just try them on.

In case that didn't work: You could start with putting them in a box, and if they fit you and you still like them in a year you keep them. If that is not the case, it is easier to get rid of them that way and until then they won't make you feel bad.

One of the most helpful things I've done for getting rid of clothes is start going to/hosting clothing swaps. Not as much of an option right *now* but pre-panini my friends and I would all take turns hosting. We'd a safe place where people can drop off their things and rummage through piles, trying things on in real time like one big changing room. We always have designated bathrooms/bedrooms for private changing, of course, but most of us just change on the fly as we find things we like because it allows everyone to showcase the items there and hype each other up and find things we think would look great on one another. It can be really hard to get rid of something you love but never/can't wear (especially really expensive pieces or costume/art pieces), but seeing somebody put on something you once loved and they just look bangin' in it and everyone is telling them how good it looks on them is just the best feeling. Then at the end of it, generally the last few people divide up the unclaimed things to distribute to women's shelters. It has been immensely helpful for me and my relationship with clothing, and as a bonus, it SIGNIFICANTLY cut down on my fast fashion purchases over the last few years!

This was super therapeutic for me to watch because i’ve gained a lot more weight since covid started and i was already big to begin with so it’s been hard. I recently also went through a LOT of clothes i hung onto and am in the process of buying new stuff that fit me better. What Kristin said about getting rid of clothes to buy bigger ones really resonates with me.

I'm proud of you for doing the thing. So much room for activities! Kinda jealous that I don't live in a place with lots of pretty plus size clothes, or stylish plus size clothing owners who are cleaning out their closet and donating to local thrift stores ;) I definitely don't buy clothes on sale when I feel sad, and then make myself feel worse because the clothes don't fit me properly or emphasise my apron belly that I can't yeet. I've been trying to sew my own clothes so that I can choose my own fun fabrics, have something that fits properly, and I can have pockets and other nice things. Making clothes is hard though, trying to make a pattern from an existing shirt that fits me well nearly melted my brain, because darts. Then I over-compensated with adding extra length onto everything, so the darts didn't sit where they should and that shirt looks weird. But I will try again, in time.

A tip I picked up from outgrowing my wardrobe twice during the pandemic: if you outgrow an item you absolutely love and can't bear to part with, try finding it in your new size on poshmark, de pop, ebay, etc. I was able to replace three of my favorite items even though they were no longer in stores.

I love clearing out/purging videos! This was fantastic. Having done KonMarie, one thing I recommend from it for any clearing out is to thank the item when you get rid of it. I find that it helps to relive some of the negative emotions from getting rid of things.

Kristin I love how you know your style and you’ll wear whatever you want! I’m a big girl as well and I struggle wearing anything but jeans, capris, jean shorts and tee shirts with flip flops. I’m 30 and I’ve always been like this... I can count on my fingers how many times I’ve worn a dress in the last ten years and I don’t own skirts. I admire you so much for just being you! I only shop at torrid, Ross, and some small stores because idk where to get cute plus size clothes that aren’t freaking crop tops or super mature looking ! I just went through my closest recently and got rid of 3 contractor bags worth of clothes that I’ve gotten between high school and now. This video makes me want to dress better!

I've always said I was a collector, not a hoarder. OCD certainly didn't seem to describe my behavior, & neither did the specials on TV about hoarding. Over the years I've had 3 careers & they all came w stuff. All of which was tax deductible so I had reasons... THANK YOU, Kristen, for saying this so clearly & most especially, being so honest. I believe I've much more clarity about what I've been doing & how to move forward. And kudos to Jen for being supportive w/o being either bossy or co-dependent, demonstrating real support & friendship. You are great people.

I don't know if someone in the comments has talked about it yet but something that helps me more easily get rid of clothes, with hanging clothes anyways, is at the beginning of the year face the hangers with the hook side facing inward and when I wear something once I've washed and hung it back in the closet hang it hook side out then any clothes on hangers that haven't been turned with in the year I get rid of because if I don't wear it in a year I don't really need it
