Buying beaded earrings from Indigenous people supports the Native American community 🥰 If you are not sure about buying them because you're not-native yourself- when you buy authentic native made you have bought the right to wear them, we wont sell you what is inappropriate to wear 😊 You can politely ask what Tribe an artist is a member of, and where their family is from.

I have a pronunciation note! Someone might have already said this, and you got it right with Joey’s intro, but “anishinaabe” and “kwe” both end with an “aye” sound, like in “way”! Also, a bonus is “kwe” means woman in anishanaabemowin (or the Ojibwe language) 😊 This makes me so happy- I’m Cree and trying to connect back where I can, and part of that has been re-learning to flat bead and learn how to make earrings over the last year.

I prefer smaller earrings for myself, but I can absolutely appreciate the beauty and work that goes into those pieces of art. Years ago I attempted to make bracelets with seed beads. Just getting the right needle and thread to be able to do patterns was a struggle! Nothing worse than getting thread that is thin enough to go through beads multiple times for complex patterns, only for it to break and your work to fall apart.

I loved my Native American art history class in the spring (sadly I had to withdraw for my physical health). I was so excited to work on the final project was to recreate traditional indigenous art with traditional materials. I was trying so hard to find quills to do my project. I literally texted my best friend to ask for horse hair. (Sorry if this doesn’t make entire since my nerve damage gives me bad brain fog). I have several indigenous friends who really were excited to see how well I did. I was going to recreate the bag without the shoulder strap that was in the first indigenous picture taken (It was some christian indigenous leader) I still actually read my book I have for that class because it is so interesting and I love to learn new things. All of the beadwork of your earring are gorgeous

I'm assuming Kristen is native so it's okay for her to buy these but what's the protocol for someone who isn't native but really really loves these and just appreciates the beauty of it EDIT: didn't realize she would mention it at the end that it's okay to buy as long as it's from a native source. How do I go about finding out about the person to make sure it's truly native?

Good question! I feel like a good way is just to see who is interacting with them in the Instagram comments? Is it other Native folks? People who are in community and who say who their Nation/Tribe is in their bio are probably good to go! If anyone has better ideas please correct me!!!
