I just bought a small tube of quin magenta yesterday and wondered what mixes it would produce. Thanks for the introduction to this type of color chart.

This video was just what I needed to see. I've been wanting to do color studies similar to this as a replacement for a grid-style mixing chart. I just couldn't wrap my brain around how to do it without being incredibly inefficient with the paint. Seeing how you mixed everything helped me figure out my path forward. Also, that saucer is just perfect for the task. A nice little well for the magenta in the center and enough of a lip to corral the rest and keep the main color clean. I'll have to keep my eye out for a saucer like that next time I'm at the thrift store. Thank you.

Thank you so much Kristin for sharing how you charts the grid out for colour swaching. The magenta is so beautiful with the colours you chose too. Very easy on the eye to see the subtle changes happening and so much fun too. Take care have a great day too 😊

The Raw Sienna/Magenta creates almost a 'Potter's Pink' on the middle row, which is a colour I love. 😊 I'm absolutely not a fan of Veridian, so I appreciate being shown a use for it! 😂 I've saved this video for future reference. 😊

I think I’m only a fan of viridian when it’s mixed haha! I was surprised how much I loved the raw sienna and magenta combo. Such a cool pink I need to use more often

This was a fun start to the day! I love how relaxing your voiceovers are. I love the dusky tones they the Q Magenta and Viridian create with the bit of green canceling some of the red to make that hazy grey in those lovely shades! Going to have to use that mix soon. A good winter into spring transition!

I always thought color study was the complimentary colors and noncomplimentary colors. Never thought it was seeing how your different color palettes react to for. We know what complimentary colors can do but have we moved them on every shade? Thanks, this will be fun to present to others 🤗❤️👍🏽💯

Thank you for walking us through this! Do you think these 8 colors would make a well rounded palette? I’m trying to simplify my palette and would love to get down to 8-10 colors. Any suggestions? Thanks!
@kristinvanleuven6 сағат бұрын
Yes! plus magenta, so 9. If I had to choose just 8 I would get rid of viridian or raw sienna. If I had to choose just 6 I would do: cad yellow, magenta, cad red, sap green, cerulean and indigo

I have just purchased. W & N Permanent Magenta. Gorgeous colour. What is the difference though? Thank you.
@kristinvanleuven3 сағат бұрын
From what I can tell, permanent magenta might be a little warmer than quin magenta but they are very similar!

I’m new to watercolor (in the past year) and I have no idea what these terms like quinacridone, cadmium, pyrrole, pyrolene, etc mean. I’d love a video explaining the “nomenclature” of these paint/pigment terms.

very inaccurate way to do things... better to just go with 2 mixes.. and then use them moving forward
@kristinvanleuven21 сағат бұрын
@@pesto12601 can I ask what you think is inaccurate about this?
@pesto1260111 сағат бұрын
@@kristinvanleuven trying to combine two paints equally to create 3 levels of blends between the two is what's inaccurate... this is why liquid ink work so well for creating new colors from primaries... you can control the amounts with better accuracy.. 3 drops of blue to 1 drop of magenta, etc It is nearly impossible to know if you are really getting 3 to 1, 3 to 2 and 3 to 3 in your method. Plus - trying to then dilute them perfectly with the same amount of water makes it even harder. Everyone seems to post these "charts"... but they really are hard to create with accuracy for repeat use.
@danibee8 сағат бұрын
I don't think this color study method is intended to provide an exact mathematical formula for color mixes, only a visual representation of the color variations produced when mixing those two pigments. I would never expect to recreate the exact same color mix, I'd just use the chart as a general guide and go from there. That being said, my style is rather loose and I tend to mix colors directly on the paper so getting an exact color mix isn't a priority for me. I love the look of color bleeds and how much dimension it adds. I think this color study would still be useful to narrow down which two paints to mix together. Is that inaccurate? Maybe. But there's beauty in the creative process, and making each piece slightly unique, in my opinion
@kristinvanleuven8 сағат бұрын
Ok, but this is not for liquid watercolors and we’re not aiming for accuracy. I see your point but I don’t think this has anything to do with what I’m doing here. We’re experimenting to see the colors we can achieve while painting, not doing a science experiment. The beauty of watercolor, especially when you mix colors, is that it’s not exactly the same every time and those that color mix expect and love those inaccuracies. Those who prefer exact mixtures I’m sure love to use liquids and pre made colors
@kristinvanleuven8 сағат бұрын
@@danibee yes, exactly my thoughts! We’re definitely not going for mathematical exactness over here 😅
