Smooth operator is or was a term used to describe someone who is good at doing business deals. Now to the legality of those deals is another thing. The song seams to be applying the term a guy who is a playboy or even a player who has a lot of dealings with other people, men and women involving sex. But the video seams to be indicating that the smooth operator is an arms dealer who is doing business outside the rules of how he should be doing it.

~obligatory story every time I hear the word Sade~ I used to go to BBQs in Tacoma with my ex bestie's parents on Hilltop in the late 00's and they had a friend named Corinne who ALSO used to show up with her boyfriend at the time, a dude named Robert.
