To me the big difference is whether someone is ripping something off to make money and is not respectful of the origin - like a major corporation doing cheap replica art of indigenous people and getting details wrong or disrespecting sacred parts of culture/religion.
@jackiec85912 күн бұрын
@@wjb-wi6dt I agree. For example, wearing costumes of Native Americans for Hallowe'en is, in my opinion, very disrespectful if you're not one of them. Seems to me, the ones who do the cultural appropriation are the ones who think of other traditions (especially non-Western cultures or people of color) as 'childishly exotic'.

I believe Madonna broke the wall of racisms and freedom of expression back in her days. She brought the Gen Xers into the world of possibilities through openness of the heart not only with her music, with her concerts and videos but through her art. As every choreographer she ever had, came from different background, color and sexual orientation. She showed the world every ethnicity, no mater if your a man or woman, if you're gay or not. that they can pull a kickass concert all together in synchronicity, respect and love. She stood up to the press and world leaders affirming our rights to freedom of speech and expression, that it was our right to be able to express who we are, the way we wanted. And she won! For a while everything was doing great and getting better (on those matters), until 2020 came along and all that went to shit when political figures around the world politicized it, started to put blame on one another and stuffing us with BS. Now people are fed up in being told what to think and what to say. We give the middle finger to the cancel culture and those who put us in in the left or right basket, where one basket has all negative labels on it and the other basket is a basket case of itself. Anyways, that was my off topic rant! I think Madonna did great things in her career, even dough I was more into Metalica, Guns N'Roses Sex Pistols and Dead Kenedys!

About Don't Cry For Me Argentina, Madonna did that song in 1996 for the movie Evita, in which she played the main role herself. 20 years earlier, Evita was a musical by Tim Rice and Lloyd Webber, and Don't cry for me Argentina was sung by Julie Covington and released on single it was a big hit early 1977. Even though it was 5½ minutes long and very classical with a full orchestra 🙂

There is a HUGE difference between cultural appreciation and appropriation. It drives me NUTS that so many people scream "appropriation" for absolutely everything... unless the person is claiming it is from THEIR culture and not yours... it's not appropriation. There are also times when people are either ignorant (or intentionally controversial) where they will use something religious from other cultures, which is insensitive and very ill-advised, but again, not technically appropriation.

Historically speaking, if she's 50% Italian and 50% French Canadian then she's not far off Spanish. Spanish, Italian and French (as well as Romanian) are all Latin languages. 🤷♂️ It was actually a Frenchman who came up with the concept of a unified Latin identity: with the Spanish Empire in decline he hoped to foster a Latin identity in the Americas that would allow the French to dominate the New World as the remaining Latin great power. Instead, Latin America said, "yeah, we like that idea, but we don't want you Europeans thinking you get to boss us around again so you aren't invited."

@zivo2410 күн бұрын
It won the Oscar for best song for “You must love me” for the song writers - Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. It was the second time Madonna had performed the Oscar winning song in a movie - but the award only goes to the writers. She won the Golden Globe for Best Actresx in a Musixal or Comedy and the fim won for best movie in that same category. I hope he watches “Take a bow” and understands that she made that video and sent it to the director Alan Parker along with a handwritten letter explaining why she wanted that role so badly. She won the role over actresses like Meryl Streep, Glenn Close and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Madonna has said that in another life she was absolutely Spanish. The song you remember is "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" from the Broadway play Evita. Madonna gave an amazing performance as Evita Peròn in the movie. It also starred Antonio Banderas. Critics panned her performance specifically because she was Madonna. She was so big at that time, they just weren't going to give her an Oscar. She was Taylor Swift's predecessor in her use of Feminine archetypes and imagery. Madonna ruled the world, but she played with darker imagery and explicit sexuality. Taylor focuses on lighter, less threatening Feminine themes so her music reaches the very young as well as teens and adults. Taylor has technology and resources M. Didn't have yet, like the wifi bracelets and positive social cues like friendship bracelets and fan cues the fans cane up with that everyone does at certain parts of certain songs. Madonna was directly challenging the Patriarchy with the use of Catholic imag3y, but T aylor has females of ALL ages chanting "F. the Patriarchy" in the middle of "All Too Well." I could go on, but you get the drift.

Don't Cry For Me Argentina comes from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical "Evita". Madonna played the starring role for the movie opposite Antonio Banderas as the antagonist (Patti Lupone and Mandy Patankin played those roles on the original Broadway cast). Madonna's performance in the movie Evita of Don't Cry For Me Argentina became a very popular video and her cover charted when the movie came out. It's a very intense moment in the musical, so it lays it on pretty thick no matter how you stage it.
