I have a question because i'm newbie in monitor speaker :-). The difference between original track and this 2 set of speaker can be explained by the lack of subwoofer? It seems the sound is lacking bass. Does the Edifier S350SB can resolve this lack of bass?
@swackymusic3 жыл бұрын
To all the people to sum up the video, a 6 or 7 inch speakers is the best for KRK, to buy in general, for a usual bedroom, like around the dimensions of 3-5m from every side or so. If you have a room dimensions less than 4-3m then you can go with the 5", as you can still reduce the volume and work on it. In medium or not so small rooms, you'll have to pump the volume up to mostly max, causing chances of distortion while making music, totally possible, and by getting a more wattage of speakers we get a better clarity of mix. Around 10-20 watts of energy is used up for the kicks and snare in the mix, you think 50w in total for all random sounds in a track, is enough? Martin Garrix for example, had around a 4-5m dimensions of room as seen in his streams and was analysed (I thought he had a room of 5m or more but no its somewhere around 4.5m) .He used the 6" for better clarity and a bit more advantage on the low end. About the 20-30 tracks he made on those systems sound great. He made Animals on that. The tracks sounded decent enough even when he played on livestream. Rather than spending more on a subwoofer later regretting the fact you had less sub, it's better you buy a slightly bigger sub for multipurpose, right in between the 8 and 5, most people here are for 5 or 7 I see, but if you have a bigger room, get the 8 ofc. The example is best described at this track 6:55, where details is even better, has more low end advantage for EDM especially. If you have the money, I prefer you spend the extra bit on the 7" KRK Rokit's, the volume can be adjusted according to the room size. But, in the end 5" sounds great too, that isn't a fail, especially when you have a smaller room as per the dimensions given. 5" is portable though, in case you are on partial movement at times. Also, Skrillex, Dillon Francis, Steve Aoki, and multiple EDM artists use KRK Rokit's, mainly 5" at home studio, but also keep switching withing the 6", or they work with the monitors close enough to them, for the sub advantage. And the next main thing to consider after room size is your personal preference. Don't thirst out your money you can still do it great on 5" Therefore, get the studio monitors mainly based on wattage and size of room.

This video highlights my biggest concern about the testing methodology. It is very clear that the 5" version is brighter in this recording than the 7". It is also very obvious that something in the testing chain gives a very bright bias to all the speakers tested (in this and other videos). We are not only hearing the transfer properties of the speaker, but the combination of the speaker and the recorder. My issue is that it is hard to separate the effect of the speaker behavior and the recorder behavior. Since both the 5" and 7" sound brighter than the original track, I cannot tell what the right "brightness level" is. One way to interpret the recording is to say that the 7" is perfect, and the 5" is too bright, another is to say that the 5" is perfect, and the 7" is not bright enough. I suppose an expert could tell by looking at the frequency graphs in simpler cases, but I'm not an expert and I'm probably not the only non-expert viewer. It would be great to have a "recording chain adjusted" version of the track that compensates for the transfer function of the recording chain to give an idea of how the speakers would sound without the bias of the recording devices.
@KarlGutowski4 жыл бұрын
I'm listening on Shure SRH1840. I think this testing "facility" has poor acoustic treatment and having the tweeter 2 inches lower on the smaller speakers makes a big difference. Maybe they don't bother to move the microphone lower, or raise the monitor to compensate for height difference between these monitors. I can also hear the bass slap back off the walls on bass heavy tracks while listening to these tests, and if you compare just how much worse the stereo image is to original tracks tells me that there's a lot of smearing and phase cancellation in the mids and bass. Lastly, every graph for every monitor they tested in this room show a hump at 85 Hz and a huge dip at 120 Hz.

On my screen, and with my red/green colour deficient eyesight (not an uncommon occurrence, in males mainly) the colours in the Frequency Response Curves appear dark grey and light grey. Because red normally copies darker on grey-tone copies, I assume that the light grey (green for normal colour vision) is the RP7 and the dark grey(red for normal colour vision) is the RP5. From comparison of the frequency curves there is virtually no difference between about 38Hz and 300Hz. I would have expected that the RP7 would show a higher sound intensity at these sub 300Hz frequencies. If anything the darker line (RP5) shows a marginally higher intensity for the same frequency response value. The RP5 curve shows higher sound intensity compared with the RP7 from 2kHz to about 14.5kHz, which might be expected from the smaller bass cone. Surprisingly the RP7 is higher from 14.5kHz to 20kHz, the RP5 curve dropping more rapidly at the highest frequencies. Based on these observations, I would expect the bass signatures of the two monitors to be very similar and, in the higher frequencies, for the RP5 to sound brighter. Of course this assumes that the two response curves are based on the same zero intensity settings and that the measurements are made in exactly the same way, with the same microphone equipment and positioning relative to the high frequency drivers of each set of speakers. The lower frequency measurements are not quite as dependent on microphone height, since the wave propagation is less directional. Also the effects of the room acoustics modify the input to the microphones considerably as seen from the similar ups and downs of the curves which, if measured under anechoic conditions (i.e. no sound reflection from walls and ceilings), should presumably be horizontal for about 60Hz to 15kHz, if the manufacturer has tuned them well. However, despite these constraints, it is surprising to me that the 38 to 100 Hz are so similar. I expect the RP5 to be a little brighter above 200 Hz because of the smaller bass cone, which in each case handle the mid-base to low treble frequencies. To my ears, and through KZbin compression and my equipment, these two Rokits do sound remarkably similar. This begs the question whether it is worth paying more for the 7 inch monitors, unless your studio or listening area requires a higher output, which the 7 inch monitors with their more powerful amplifiers may provide. I would like to see a comparison between the Rockit 7 and Rockit 8, and anechoic recording of frequency response curves for comparison would be valuable. However, I don’t want to be burdensome, and the wonderful effort effort by this site owner is already so very laudable. Thank you for your efforts. 👍
@joesephspiers66023 жыл бұрын
If the graphs of the room response are over-layed, the 7 is louder across all frequencies and nearly identical in all room responses (localized fluctuations in curve possibly a sign of room acoustics more so than speaker output?). The 40-60 Hz response is slightly even greater in the 7 however there is one range where the two are equal. That is the 1.2 KHz to 2.2 KHz range. Which means, the 5 is as loud in that range but 2-5 decibels lower in all other. In essence it appears the 5 would be 2-5 decibels louder in the 1.2 KHz to 2.2KHz range if the volume for all other frequencies were normalized (set approximately equal). Thanks for the information.
@DSAUDIOreview3 жыл бұрын
The frequency response and sound samples suggest that they both sound very close to each other in normal use. RP7 will have more headroom though, so it will be able to play louder without distorting. RP5 is not as loud but it has one advantage: much less hiss from the amplifiers

I just returned the 7s for a pair of 5s, since I have a small treated room (10 x 10). The 7's sounded great, but to my surprise the 5's sounded even better, with tighter bass and significantly less self-noise. Your needs, of course, will vary. A larger woofer is better for a larger or an untreated room, but at close quarters with an acoustically treated room, the 5's were a far better fit. This video, even with the camera audio and KZbin audio limitations aside, actually does a pretty good job at capturing the tightness of the 5's bass if you listen with good phones. The bass sounds even tighter in person (again, in a treated room) on the 5s than the 7s. Both killer Rokits, though.
