For today’s video, we are going to switch gears a bit to share a huge part of what has been going on in our lives for the past several months.
As you might remember, my cousin Tess was our gestational carrier for our sweet baby Elsie back in 2023. Moments after Elsie was born, Tess went through a very scary postpartum hemorrhage. This quickly put our plans of her carrying another baby for us on hold as we focused on what was most important - her health and recovery.
As time passed, Tess healed and we began to look at the potential of her carrying for us again. After a lot of research and conversations with multiple doctors, we ultimately decided to proceed with the medical testing process.
When we started the process of “Baby Number Two,” Brian and I decided early on that we weren’t going to tell anyone except a few very close friends and family members. We’ve put a lot of our lives out there these last few years, and anyone who has struggled with fertility issues or been through IVF will understand how much of an emotional rollercoaster the entire process is.
However, as things took a bit of a turn a few weeks ago, we started sharing with more people and ultimately, we decided to open up about it. I hope this video can make someone out there feel just a little bit less alone. And I know it will make us feel less alone to have the love of our community behind us.
Monday, February 10th will be a BIG step for us in this process, and in today’s video very special guest Tess joined me to talk about it. We would love your prayers and good vibes going into this next week.
One thing I know is that what is meant to be will be… even if it’s not exactly how we hoped things would go. After all, most of this adventure called life hasn’t really gone as planned. But here we are, stronger than ever, ready to face what’s next.

We are Brian & Jessica, a married couple who started on a life-changing whole food, plant-based journey back in June 2018. In June 2022, our lives were flipped upside-down when Jessica was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer at age 36. Since then we welcomed our very first child via gestational carrier and bought a new house! In May 2024, our lives took another major turn when Brian was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma at age 41.

I would say that adoption would be a great option and is something we might consider in the future. But we have two healthy embryos just sitting there waiting to be implanted. One boy and one girl. We feel in our souls that we have to try and give them a life. We can't just let them die without at least attempting to bring them into the world.

They are alive. They are fertilized. They have cells that divide. They have their own DNA. They may not be fully formed humans, but they are alive in every definable way. And as we have said many many times, Tess' health is our number one priority. Period.

Usually for gestational carriers, it is preferred if they are done having children of their own first. This was true in Tess’s case. She was actually very, very close to having a uterine ablation years ago. That is a “surgical procedure that destroys or removes the endometrium, the lining of the uterus.” Then she had the thought that maybe one day she could be a surrogate / gestational carrier and decided not to go through with the ablation.

I've only watched about 4 minutes into it but all I can think is when Tess delivered Elsie it literally literally just about killed her. She just about died so people need to go back and look at that video. I can't believe that Jessica and Brian are asking her to put her life on the line again. She has children. She has a husband. I cannot believe you would expect or hope or dream or anything to put this poor woman through it again. Maybe this time she won't be so lucky and then how precious will that child be knowing that delivering Elsie and what happened later was so nearly tragic. I know people die in child of birth everyday. It's a shame, but boy I can't believe you're asking her to do it again. Maybe this isn't what the video is about. Maybe she's not going to do it but based on the title, yeah, it sounds like you're going to put her through it again. Tess you are a special woman if you're willing to go through it again and risk your life again

It's a beautiful thing to be so selfless, but it comes at a huge price. Jess, you and Brian have been through a lot together. Why not just enjoy the baby you have as you acclimate towards healing? You've both been through such a physical and emotional journey. Another baby isn't going to fix any of the wounds from your experience, and it isn't without risk to your cousin. I understand Tess is the one "driving the train", but considering another baby with someone so selfless means they'd move Heaven and Earth to help you. Why bring up another baby so soon after Elsie and risk your cousin's life? Why not focus on getting healthy and enjoying the baby you have? Of course, you're free to do what you want (as is Tess). It just seems rather premature, and apparently, I'm not the only one who thinks so. Your cousin is a beautiful soul, there's no denying that. But why not let her off the hook and focus on yourselves?😔❤️❤️

I hate to say this, but you two need to get yourself healthy! And, I’m speaking physically health, mental health and emotional health . I don’t know about your financial situation, but it’s very difficult raising children these days in this world. Please just concentrate right now on the child you have. With both of you having cancer, this is not a good situation for presenting a future with a family . Maybe you’re millionaires and all your needs and children’s needs can be taken care of. But another child is not going to fulfill and make your life better. If you’re going to therapy, any psychologist would look at the situation and tell you the same. If they are encouraging you to have another child and to keep going on the way you are, that’s not the answer and it’s not right. You have a lot to work on. That’s just my personal opinion.

It’s not your place to judge other people’s decisions with your virtue signalling. @@ceruleanblue2956 please Jessica, don't let her do it? No nope. Nope, she's the one that's pushing for it. She's like well. You know there's a possibility that there's a little room in your uterus where the stuff went the chemicals. And yeah yeah your uterus might be screwed up but there's still a little room to put a baby in there. I've never liked Jessica from the beginning. I think she's a user and Brian is a saint putting up with her. But nonetheless, Jessica is going to push push push to get that woman to carry her child. Tess commented in a previous post that they would never let her go through with it if it was dangerous. Well who? Who who foresaw what did happen when Elsie was born? You just about died and then you had to have the d&c and whatever the other procedure was. Did anybody see that coming? Did the doctors see that coming? No! So you can't say well. They won't let me do it if it's not safe because who knew that near-death situation was going to happen. And on a different vein, I think their marriage is troubled. If you watch the video from earlier this week or last week where they're actually arguing about his weight loss and how he doesn't file the program. I hope that they do not pass the psychological evaluations for IVF and go any further. Their marriage seems to be on a rocky road and I don't mean ice cream

Homebithers ate usually low risk and are well informed and know what to do in case of an emergency. Jessica and Brian are not the kind of people to pressure anyone and they for sure would not be on board with this if they felt there were an unacceptable risk here, or if they thought Tess felt pressure in any way. These people are adults and have doctors who are well aware of the medical history here. I'm sure the doctors wouldn't take them as IVF patients if they felt the risks were very high. BTW people who've had a PPH are at higher risk of having another PPH compared to people who haven't, but the absolute risk of recurrence is still pretty low. It is much much more likely that it will not happen again than that it will.

Some tough questions (forgive me for asking these but I imagine many others are wondering the same and you said go for it). 1) How does Jeff feel about this 2nd go round? He could lose his wife and mother of the children.... which brings me to question #2. Is financial compensation a motivator? NOMB I know and I don't expect an answer, but otherwise, it does not compute to me. 3) Is it responsible to bring kids into the world before the 5 year 'cancer free' status? I guess last nagging question (for me) would be: Has Tess agreed to raise these children as her own should anything happen to you or Brian and maybe visa versa as well. You are majorly blessed to have a cousin like Tess. We should all be so lucky. Wishing you all well.

I would just advise you to consider your own health concerns (no evidence of disease isn’t the same as being cured, unfortunately) as well as Tess’s health and the well being of your child and possibly future child. From my own experience, I know that when we have a strong desire for a child, we don’t always make completely rational decisions. I've been following you guys for a while now and am very impressed by how you've handled things in the past, as well as by the self-awareness and critical thinking you've demonstrated time and again. @@homeshowsHello, it's the Internet!😂 You're exhibiting your *own* opinion, too!🧐 People are allowed to express how they feel whether you agree or not, and they're not in the minority, besides. I agree that Tess shouldn't consider doing this, but she'll do whatever she wants, of course. That doesn't mean viewers can't have an opinion one way or the other.

If it’s any consolation…I had PPH with 2 out of my 3 pregnancies due to retained placenta. One in the hospital and one after coming home. With my 3rd pregnancy everything went great. I was told as long has there were no underlying hematological issues I was good. Certainly consult with your OB team and go from there.

Yep! That was one of the (MANY) pieces of information considered. It was the retained placenta that caused the PPH, not anything in my body that would definitely be there again.

Okay see now it seems like you're testing God's patience though right?! I see y'alls comments. I see you saying that everyone's making a decision clearly and it's not any more risky for anyone than anyone else (which is patently untrue in her case). Being cleared to do something by a medical establishment that doesn't care about women isn't really that impressive. But just the fact that you would even consider risking her life again, when you were so lucky to be blessed the first time safely and BARELY. Do you, But I don't think I can watch the channel anymore knowing that I might be watching a mother of her own children die to risk having another baby for two people who have already almost died in the last couple years like damn. When do you stop and just give thanks? There are a lot of parables about this you guys.

I appreciate your concern. I understand from the outside this may seem risky. Pregnancy itself is always risky and IVF is riskier- no matter who carries the baby. We have all met with several doctors to be cleared to do this again. They would not let me do this again if it could not be safely done. I am 100% the one who is driving this train. Jessica and Brian would never pressure me to do this again. -Tess

Where are the grownups? I would have hoped the doctors you consulted would have advised you against this. Being a surrogate, after nearly dying the first time, for two people who already have a very strong chance of cancer reoccurring, is not safe. Is Tess’s husband ready to raise all their kids.

It's really easy when you aren't the one to carry a pregnancy and a surrogate goes through all it for you. Her family and children and she takes all the risk for your joy. Seeing as though she went through all that she went through before, she has done her duty.

Except that the doctors they consulted said it was okay to move forward. Why is your opinion of greater value than the opinion of medical professionals who actually have examined her, know her history, and have seen her test results? Tess is a competent adult who wants to do this. Who are you to judge her for that? You can't judge Jessica and Brian in this situation without also judging Tess to be unable to make good choices about her own body.

@@littleredbenderBecause this is the Internet, and just like you have an opinion, so does everyone else.🤷‍♀️ It's natural that at least half of the comments point to concern regarding Tess doing this again, and encouraging Brian and Jess to focus on getting healthy and enjoying the baby they have. If they didn't want differences of opinion, they should have kept this *very private matter* to themselves.

At the end of the day it’s your choice. However, by putting your life choices on YT , you open yourself to a myriad of opinions . I actually wonder what YT channels will reveal in how people live their lives in the future… ..Because it seems that humanity wants to highlight their life on social media and put themselves out there for monetary and other reasons.. It is a different concept for those of us not born in the time of social media and internet.
